@MsDynamo30 It actually comes from an emotionally charged place. This music was composed to reflect Aleksander Pushkin's story "Blizzard" or "Snowstorm". If you can find it in translation, it is very much worth your time to read it.

I am listening this piece for years and couldn't get enough....

Вступление - это именно свиридовская МАССА СТРУННЫХ, выворачивающая душу.

Нечто похожее звучит и в фильме "Воскресение" по Толстому - когда Катюша Маслова выходит из тюрьмы и идет в суд. Фильм Швейцера с музыкой Свиридова - тот, который с Матвеевым и Сёминой.

I head this piece set with domra, balalajka, gusli and piano last weekend. It was absolutely fantastic and beautiful. (Not that this recording is not fine, but the folk instruments added something extra to the tune.)

P.S. I wish there was more info about the orchestra and soloists. I am assuming it's Moscow's BSO and the violin solo plays either Valintin Zhuk or Victor Khachturian, they both were marvelous with playing this piece.

The question remains why conductors in the West don't schedule music by this great composer. Sviridov's music can be very exciting indeed. His specialty was writing for chorus and orchestra. I am not aware whether he wrote any symphonies. But again, in the West, sadly we don't know much about Sviridov.

I have to say though, this is b/c Russians have been so deprived of emotional development due to their terrible living conditions, that this is one of the only ways for them to express themselves.  That's why Russian music is so deep.

@FryChicken That theory is a bit wrong. You don't see african people composing deep msuic... (Usually) and they suffer more then anyone else. Various countries in europe have suffered more then russians during different times. No I think this has to do with the russian culture and character itself, so called the "russian soul". It's just the way we are.

Russians might be masters when it comes to composing, but no one beats Africans when it comes to dancing!
