  • I'm going to get in so much trouble for writing this. . .but Jack looks so fucking hot during this scene.

On a serious note, it's very well done by both actors--it's really disturbing how oblivious he is to what he's really done, and how ashamed he is when he realizes it.

  • @CamilleNadia I agree, the actor was gorgeous...

People new to the show probably don't remember that Jack had been sick with Hodgekins disease and Kayla was his nurse, she took care of him and married him out of pity. Jack had also just found out that his adopted father was a murderer, so of course his head was messed up. He thought he'd end up like his father, and was always afraid he'd end up being some monster. I'm not defending what he did, but there were reasons why he was so unstable.

  • @CamilleNadia it doesn't matter how hot he is, doesn't make it right

  • It's NEVER anyone's right to have sex with another person against that person's will. The acting in this particular story line was absolutely phenomenal. Stephen, Mary Beth, and Matthew should've all been considered for Daytime Emmy nominations for it in my opinion.

  • It was the first marital rape on TV, prior to this it was a husband's rights no matter what, a wife cannot say no.

  • @caprice6

It wasn't the first. I think GL tackled it first with Roger and Holly, and there may have been stories even before that one.

  • Didnt these rape stories change the way the courts view rape?.

  • WHy do they always have to show a shower scene after someone is raped?

  • @BabyCarlyle the victim feels unclean afterwards. psychological, they are not supposed to do this until they see the police and be examine with a rape kit.

  • I'll never understand Jack raping Kayla, And I dont understand anyone who says they do. Yes hes angry, he wants her to love him....so what? He can yell, hell he can even slap her (which is wrong), and it'd make sense....yes there is redemption for everyone, but imagine if you were Abby....and you knew your dad raped Kayla..I'd feel sick to my stomach. Or Stephanie knowing your mom was raped and you were raped, There is redemption, but raping someone is hard to redeem your self from.

  • Yeah, "Jackie boy" went through quite the evolution. Handsome, preppy (seemingly oblivious) nice guy to conniving, bitter villain/rapist to sarcastic, conflicted, tormented soul to insecure, misguided but funny and loving hero/family man. No one said soaps were realistic. :) It may have been extremely far-fetched to redeem the character the way Days did, but somehow Matthew Ashford made it plausible and appealing. Jack Deveraux became one of the most beloved Days characters ever.

  • @450creek Lots of shows did the whole turning rapists into heros thing: GH, GL, OLTL

  • @BabyCarlyle I know, it's ridiculous. In real life, a man is not ashamed after that and he goes to prison for what he does.

  • @450creek actually there are some ppl who think this stuff is realistic. They have no biz watching if they can't separate fact from fiction.

  • I agree that the marriage between Jack and Kayla never should've happened but that doesn't in any way excuse Jack for raping Kayla. Yes she was wrong to marry him when she still loved and wanted to be with Steve but her being raped by Jack is totally inexcusable. Jack should've backed off and left her alone the first time that she told him that she loved Steve. Jack never truly loved Kayla it was more of an obsession on his part. Jack at that time was a spoiled brat who needed to grow up.

  • So Kayla wanna act brand new?

  • Don't get me wrong cuz rape is non excusable but Kayla also was wrong for marrying Jack for the wrong reasons then expecting him to accept all these excuses. I personally saved myself for marriage and could not see myself just given it up to anyone but the 1 I made a life commitment for. But hey these are soap operas :-)

  • Confused ~ why did Kayla marry him if she was still wanting Steve? Also what excuses could she keep given to not have sex with ur husband.

  • @Lisaluv1

She was in love with Steve, but he'd found out that Jack was his brother and Jack was really sick. Dying. He broke up with her hoping she'd help Jack. Jack told Melissa that if he didn't have the hope of a future with Kayla, he might as well give up the fight to live. Jack was her friend and she cared about him. Steve had said he didn't need her, but Jack certainly did. Everyone was pressuring her to accept his proposal, too. Said it could make the difference for him.

  • I never liked Jack... God, what's his childhood trauma?!

  • He had a pretty vile father! Not that this excuses his actions but it explains a lot about Jack!! Nice to see this... I started to watch Days just as he was falling for Jennifer so missed these.

  • i hope his character burned in hell

  • He actually went on to be a pretty popular character if you can believe it.

  • i love how when girls on soap operas ge like violated or raped [which i am totally against and i think it's wrong and terrible i just think this fact is funny] the only clothing they need to like fix or put back is their shoulder material or the corner of their shirt/dress

  • Yep, and it's always be some relatively handsome character on the show who was overcome with intense passion; not some nasty lowlife off the street who was just wanting to commit an act of violence.

  • @alpineswissmiss well Jack's not really handsome, Luke Spencer wasn't handsome, and Todd was scrawny. Let's just say anybody can rape on daytime.

  • jack wa the dumb one in all of this, i mean come on! if ur wife never wants to sleep with u, yeah, there's somehting wrong here?not even on ur wedding night?Obviously she doesnt trust you enuf or love or want you!duh!

  • Matt Ashford said this one of his 5 top scenes in his role as Jack Deveraux. He said it was a pivotal point in the character.

Jack was not a nice person on his early days.

  • no way! the woman is NEVER to blam if she is raped!he has a mind of his own! he made the decision to rape her! and rob her of her dignity and respect in the worst way! he coulda just left or yellled or something. thnere is NO Excuse for wht he did and she is not to blame at ALL!

  • Just because someone is mad doesn't give them the right to rape another person. For any reason at all. Should he of killed her because she married him but didn't love him or have sex with him, and instead, got with his brother? No I don't think so. Rape is even worse. Okay you don't love me so I'm just gonna rape you. Thats horrible!! No one deserves that shit!! He was in the wrong. He should've just took it like a man and decided to divorce.

  • It wasn't right of him to rape his wife, but Matt does a great job of making you understand why he did it. I mean she marries him and then refuses to have sex with him even one time! Come on!

  • Ok... this was inexcusable. Rape always is; it's horrible; it's wrong, and the victim has to live with that all their life, knowing and feeling someone hurt them physically, trying to break their soul. It's awful.

And it's sick, because that pain is so dramatic that soaps love it. Most women on soaps have been raped at some point.

That said, I agree with you to a point. What he did, thanks to Matt, becomes *understandable*. You know WHY he did it, his POV. It still makes it in no way right.

  • It was very well-done, and the closest I've ever come to understanding a rapist's point of view. Probably the closest I ever will come to it. Kayla should never have deceived him in the first place. He still shouldn't have raped her. I understand his hatred, though.

  • Wasn't it revealed that Jack & Steve are brothers? Refresh my memory....

  • Yes, they are brothers.

  • What season is this?

  • It was in 1988.

  • how logn has the song been runing

  • this was the worst part of dool during the late 80s. i felt sorry for jack for doing this not for love but for hate. after he divorced kayla, he then started dating jennifer and married her. then they became a supercouple which made me happy for jack.

  • omg poor kayla, poor jack :(

  • i ve never thought that jack could do that!

  • Me neither. I know what he did was wrong but I can't help but feel sorry for him. I never got to see this Jack so it is easy to defend him. Is it wrong of me to think that she partly caused this on herself or am I just trying to defend Jack?. I know Jack was wrong but she was cheating on him with his brother which doesn't justify rape but why did she marry him when she didn't love him? She was cheating on him with his brother!

  • well i didn t follow this part but i think that Jack to didn t love her for real and he was in love with jennifer so i don t see why he s apset if Kayla loves his brother or not,may be i m to harsh towards Jack but it s what i think.

  • This was long before Jack and Jennifer even crossed paths on the tv. Jack was married to Kayla at the time.

Jennifer was involved in the "teen storylines" at this time.

  • @Szeicho --Are you a girl? If you're a girl...then think about it like this...if you wronged someone in love or through lying, do you think Rape is an acceptable form of punishment? She never ever caused this. Everyone, minus children and the exception, is responsible for their own actions. If my husband cheated on me, can I hurt him? No. And if I really love him, which I do, I'd never want to.

  • Somehow, after all these years, I can see both Jack and Kayla's points of view. Steve really set this in motion by trying to save Jack's life by pushing Kayla away. He meant well, but he played god in their lives, IMO, and it had disasterous consequenses for Jack and for Kayla. But it was a great storyline. I remember it really held my attention every day.

  • jack was a scary psycho back in the day.

  • I can totally see his POV. I'm a woman, don't condone rape, but I can' understand rage, and snapping, and responding in violence Jack had been raised by Harper the psycho who taught him nobody scorns a dveraux. His fear of losing face to his dad and to the general public for being cuckolded, his own fears of being half a man for being so sick, etc - he needed therapy badly, but he wasn't evil - just so seriously damaged.

  • I agree. He wasn't evil. If he had been then he would've never been the great character that we loved when he and Jennifer were together. His upbringing by Harper had a LOT to do with the rape. His "father" was so evil that he turned Jack into someone that would violate Kayla the way he did.

  • DOOL seemed to be a very serious programme before, totally different from how it's like now :O

Matt is the reason to why I still watch it (I tape him too *fanatical grin*)

Here in Sweden, the year just turned 2003 in the world of DOOL, so I've got three golden years of Jack-swooning left :*)

  • I actually hated Jack at the time, but in hindsight, I see his p.o.v. better.

  • Thank you so much for all vids you share, it is appreciated!

  • Great job, thank you so much.

  • Matt and Mary Beth acted great together.
