very helpful! the only thing left out was a reminder to wear safety glasses while flinging bits of metal about. otherwise, this is a sound method for getting a good edge.

yep, sure have, it kept my eye from closing it was so long took the doctor forever to get it out, wore a patch for five days and still don't wear glasses, they're not your eyes so shut up already.

Keep in mind that many modern knife steels are not easily sharpened with a file after they are hardened, if they can be filed at all. They are almost indispensible for machetes though.
