Have to say. Not impressed. This person is running a 3F downhill GMAW on sheet metal. Try a 7018 vertical on plate, then we can see some skill. Don't get me wrong, I love GMAW for its ease of use (when correctly tuned)

I cannot tell you how much of an honor it is working with inventors, engineers, artists, and highly intelligent customers. If I didn't have to keep a roof over my head, I wouldn't think twice about doing it just for the experience. I work in a custom mostly Tig shop, if you want a ferrari, go to college for 10 years.
nothing wrong with having a ferrari if you can afford it while welding, i like to see the trades being paid more but i totally ahree with you, it is such a true statement, take pride in your trade and enjoy what you do.
Take it from me. Welding is a shitty way to make money. Employers don't pay welders shit anymore. One even said "welders are a dime a dozen". Fuck welding. If you're gonna do it, be your own boss or fuck it. Dont let greedy monkey suit wearing fucks take advantage of your skills.
Pat, 55k was about what I made in a good year welding. I consider that shitty reimbursement for a job that harms your body as much as welding. I am 30 years old with a fucked up back from all the lifting, standing, twisting, etc. You sound like another asshole that's been brainwashed into thinking your meager pay and steady shit job is where its at. Have fun making your mortgage with your 55k, hope you have enough left over to eat and keep the lights on.
Seriously, if you're going to settle for that kind of money at least work for yourself. Not to mention every welding job these days requires a piss test. Sorry, but thats a breach of privacy, not to mention its innocent till proven guilty in america.
Let me put it this way, if you want to be secure, successful and comfortable, don't settle for a job working for some prick, you'll always end up getting the shaft in the long. Be your own boss and reap the benefits of your skills for yourself
and for the record pat, I'd challenge you to a weld off anyday. I've held certifications in all major types of welding to aerospace standards. I can run automatic welders and positioners all day. Brake press, check. Burn table, check. Roller, check. Mills, lathes, check. There's not much I can't do in steel fabrication. After 10+ years in the trade getting fucked daily by shitheads I am proud to say no more may the industrial world benefit from my suffering. I am my own boss now.
shodanxx ur an idiot if you think ur gonna earn money in welding from 2 days of training.. try more like 2 years , after you get all of your required tickets then ur making money, other then tht ur gonna be doing this same shit every day, making ur normal 20 grand a year
i need a job mr. radovich heh :) i'm a Welder with soul and i know what i'm doing :) and for you shodanxx in few days you can only get your ass kicked !!! don't talk about Welding cause you don't have a clue about it ok !!! welding is a routine performed by perfectionist and came man's head and hand do the rest it's not only to have a steady hand you gotta now what are you doing and if someone thinks it's easy i say that he is an idiot without knowledge .)
99% of welding requires nothing more than a few days training
don't try with the "but underwater submarine welding, you can't do that so you suck" as if underwater welding had ANYTHING to do with what most welders do
just because some specific specialized form of welding is hard, doesn't mean mig welding quarter plate can't be done perfectly by an "amateur" or that isn't easy to do so with a little practice
sure, you can stick a plate to another maybe in 2f with a mig gun.But until you at least know what 6g is you know nothing.there's a lot more to it than you may ever know.
I agree with this jschulz10, sure you can press the pistol button and start "weld" without knowing anything, but, before you can even say you can say you can weld you must know theory, its the "all knowing father" in welding, seriously, You cant weld strong construction's(ship's, pressure accumulator etc) with few days of training, that is bullshit. and shodanxx PLEASE show me your own hand made weld, i bet it doesnt even catch so called D class in here europe,(B=best,C=ok,D=bad)
u kok , i guess u have no idea about welding , yes any fool can fuse material together , but doing it to a standard such as 6g for instance , well thats another matter.... and yes us Pro's as u call us get paid very well for what we do , would like to see you welding a submarine with ceramic backing.. lost ya already ehh..
has your welding been radiographed x-rayed or at least had an acid test i think not can you calculate what your speed of wire should be to the metal you are welding and what about the rate of gas and thats the basics. You cant be a welder you must be a tin sticker
Why not? If its comfortable and you arent getting burned (and dont mind eating through a pair of gloves a bit faster) there is no problem in putting your hand that close.
welding down hill with flux core is weak! little penetration. And who the hell thinks welding gloves least for ever? I wish some of you people reading and writing this bs could drop hoods with me but we cant so oh well.oh yea 300a and 26v is not anything special.
You can smell the glove, so can I. What a retard! We've had guys come in and take weld tests and burn the shit out of their gloves like that, now I know where they learned it from. It's what we should all call You tube certified in welding. Like some of these remarks about welding downhand, I used to work in a sheet metal shop and this is the norm with hardwire. In the ship yard where most of my experience comes from down hand is blasphemy and not an accepted method at all.
What I am saying is guys come into the shipyard where I work and take weld tests doing this and they burn their glove and probably hand. This shit gets hot, it doesn't have to be arc welding as you state. Mig whether it is flux core or hard wire still gets hot. Obviously you haven't ran any 1/16 inch wire at 300 amps or you would know what I am talking about. Until you know your ass from a hole in the ground you can keep making stupid coments on youtube. Obviously you haven't been welding long.
One problem with your argument Imberish... Most welders learn on single phase machines, while you probably are using 3 phase. So they wouldn't be used to welding with that much power.
Now if your having welders that are trained in Shibuilder spec or Ironworker spec that are welding like that. Then there would be a problem that needs correcting.
But if its some guy working at a job shop or auto body shop (and they can afford all the gloves)then there is no problem using the technique shown here.
Ranger01, I'll tell you like my grandfather used to tell me, "son if you are going to learn something, you better learn to do it right the first time because picking up bad habbits like that is hard to break". I don't want to go into alot of specifics here but I am not new to this welding thing. My grandfather was a welder my father is a welder/mechanic and I am a fitter/welder, I struck my first arc when I was 8 and have won first place in pro division in arc welding competitions.
My grandfather was an engineer/welder, and my father is a heavy equipment mech/welder (also AWS Section 15 Chairman), and I am a welder/ fabricator. So don't get me started on the whole "my family's been welding for generations" bit. I have been welding since I was 7. I'll admit that it is a bad habit to weld like this, but if someone can make a good strong weld like this then there is no problem. But Im not gonna argue with you, everyone has their opinions.
Hey ranger01, I didn't want to get into specifics either (3rd generation welder/4th generation steel worker). My hat is off to you, you don't see this anymore. Keep on welding my friend.
In regards to the negative comments, your all uneducated. None of you know the class wire or gas this man is using. All of you crying about trapping slag? Chances are it's s-6 wire with 75%-25% meaning; there is no slag and not one of you could run code quality weld vertical up in the 3g position using it. russudvp.... Api 1104 is the answer to your question.Thats a pretty significant one. so yes looks like you got some training/ research to do.
He's right, i use a 85en clarke welder, runs of 0.6 wire, its friken hard to get a straight line without having the hand there to keep it stable in a straight line, also i've not had one bit of molten flick at me for shit :D i not long started welding either :D
i could have sworn professional welders know that you have to weld uphill... otherwise the flux and slag drip down and make your weld WEAK AND PATHETIC
Looks like he's welding some sheet metal so downhill isn't that big of a deal in this instance...it's not like he's welding I-beams or anything. Not many "welders" I know could even attempt to do an uphill and pull it off very successfully or know how to do it in the first place.
I weld petroleum tanks for $hell oil and for tank inserts I use down hand sometimes for the root. It just depends on gap or how I feel that day. For fill and cap I always go uphill for xray quality welds. Also I gouge out ALL of my root pass just to be sure. I prefer dual shield wire if given a choice. If not I argue. But I will weld it with stick if the weather is bad with too much wind.
It is'nt. Essentially what you are doing welding on top of your weld as it falls with gravity. Welding uphand gets that penetration and burns it in. Just turn down the heat a little though. Very bad habit welding downhill.
