He takes a lot more set-up time into his jumps and I agree that his presentation doesn't come close to Yagudin's (hardly anyone's does..), but his LP was clean while Yagudin had errors. Of course a clean Yagudin performance easily trumps everyone else, but he wasn't clean here. You have to judge the event, not a skater's reputation or popularity (which the judges clearly took into account here). It's too bad Abt didn't get his chance on top, but Yagudin already won a ton of titles.
I don't think he is far behind Yagudin in presentation. His program isn't as crowd pleasing as Yagudin's, but his had better skating skills, flow, speed and better lines than Yagudin.
He is beautiful, and I don't just mean the skating!
I think it was the beginning of his program, which was a bit slow and sort of shallow, that pushed him down to the second, because around 3rd minute starting with the rapid change of legs and spins he excelled! The second half was amazing!!!
Technically Abt was cleaner but he didn't even come close to Yagudin's presence on ice and artistry. Actually, his Rachmaninov choreography was way too monotonous and simple IMO. (Especially compared to Yagudin's Man in the iron mask program)
I cried when I saw the marks..Sasha deserved to win, he was better then yagudin then. I remember a neighbour came to my door to see what happened because he heard me crying and yelling, i was so upset..
Alexander Abt was such a marvelous skater..but he has had so many injuries unfortunately, that have kept him away from the first step of the podium ..
it was the presentation that broke him really abt had the higher technical marks but yagudin with that program did deserve the win due to presentation
I agree, Sasha Abt won that competition hands down, but no matter, the performance remains, and is one of the greatest skates of all time in my opinion.
The BIGGEST wuzrobbing of all time!!! Sasha deserved that gold more than anyone else. That was mindblowing! I remember myself almost crying after the results were announced.
I cannot believe he didn't win...Yagudin is usually great but at this competition his performance was not nearly as good as Abt's...the judges were completely biased and unfair.

"Arms flailing like a windmill". Gee, I wonder which skater who was absent at this event they're referencing there...

Yags and Abt couldn't believe it either :-P Yags later said he totally thought Abt deserved it and was embarrassed.

wow he jumps HIGH and lots too. why are so many men good at triple axels when very few women are?
eringobraugh 5 years ago 2
women are not strong enough to get high enough in the air to complete the rotation so when they usually try they underotate therefore cheat it
