No words are enough for this song. The melody in the verses is so ornate and fragile. This song has such atmosphere, it's very sparse, leaving room for reflection. Her voice starts with content tone, then the frustration seeps through giving her phrasing more and more weight...then the little boy's voice, amidst the echoing silence, acts as the consciouns, giving clarity to the self absorbed nature of us humans, to utter love to those we care for, rather than taking it with us to the grave...
I must have listened to this album hundreds of times, yet it never loses its power to stop me in my tracks. The experience is like immersing yourself into an undersea world of Kate's emotion and insight. Definition of aesthetic:
aes·thet·ic Adjective /esˈTHetik/

Giving or designed to give pleasure through beauty; of pleasing appearance
Its so lovely to be amongst the kate Clan. The dreaming confirms Kate Bush as the most important female artist ever to come from the UK. I don't say that in an idle fashion either. From the way she approaches her work to the control of her own career she took from the very beginning. We have no right to expect her to be a genius as well. Yet she is.
The Dreaming will be seen as the masterpiece that it is one day. It's amazing that she took that intensity and made The Hounds Of Love. Lucky Us!
I can t understand why this album didn t happen. The songs and lyrics are so powerful, compelling , dramatic. All the love you should have given, All the love we could have given...it gives me goose-bumps all over (sobs)
Really don't know what it is about Kate. It seems to be a very real, emotive love which has grown deeper over the years. I'd liken it to a blending of the listener into the music, for which no other artist has the same impact ... and I love many artists from many different and diverse styles. Thank fuck Kate is there, she is a transport of delight; a reminder that there is an awakening on other levels of conciousness
I just noticed that the scarf--pale green, with roses--that she is wearing at 1:00, is the same one in this pic taken at least 20+ years later: h t t p colon forward slash forward slash gaffa dot org forward slash wow forward slash k16 dot jpg. Sorry for transliterating the url but sometimes youtube sucks.
I like it that she never lets go of things she loves. Very Kate-like, to me.
This song (and a lot of the dreaming) I associate with reading books like CS Lewis's Narnia chronicles. (I was probably 5, my sister had the record on repeat). It evokes the feelings and landscapes of my childhood inner universe. OK, just plain association, sure - but I wonder if this doesn't complement those imaginative, bittersweet, contemplative and noble books in a particular way. It feels like looking out over the mist of Narnia.
@jungn0ir That's the great thing about great music, they often bring back memories and while those songs are playing, it's as if we are in a different place. Many kate songs have this feeling with me, she is a genius.
Huge depth and complexity to this, many people will not get it. Layers and layers to sift through- absolute musical genius, I can't think of anybody else capable of this
an amazing song full of melancholia and regret ,here Kates genius and profundity comes through to those who can understand it . The whole album is on a level of profound genius
If, if The love exists? , that is it. I havve a wife since 12 years, and I need all her allove, never mind what is matter , she seeks a new one , she said, She don't thinh so, I hope
This is a haunting track in it's melancholy mood - and technically, too:
1. Use of sighs is interesting. I used sighs also in a piece of mine for a classical choir (I'm studying to be a professional composer of so called classical music), and I got the idea from this track. To me, the synth pads from 1'01'' onwards also imitate human sighs.
2. Use of whispers evolves during the song. They always accompany the boy soprano, and become more and more audible every time we hear him singing.
@claude1918 I like your technical observations of this amazing song! I hadn't paid much attention to the sighs before! Reminds me of the last lines of a poem by Count Louis Hamon (Cheiro) called 'If Only We Knew':
Its' interesting that the voices of friends in ''We needed you to love us too ''sound more haunting than the voice of dead Kate.. Her reality of death is more real and their voices are gostly
Capable of producing something, especially in _abundance_.
Synonyms:
prolific
fertile
fruitful
What can be said about this, is that Kate herself has done very little to deserve the epithet 'prolific', even if she should inspire other artists to produce work of abundance.
In the twenty years that's passed since 'The Sensual World', the lady has only released two albums, making her very much the opposite of prolific.
If I'm not misremembering, in one of the few interviews she did in conjunction with the release of 'Aerial', she found the word 'cherished' as being a 'just lovely' description of herself.
you know, I wouldn't categorize kate as 'pop.' She's so diverse and I hate her music being in the same position as such crap e.g. cheryl cole, perlease! I mean, where's the talent these days?
This listening of this song just encapsulates my whole Junior Cert and T.Y. years, ahh the memories of listening to Kate Bush!!!! It has been criminally too long!!! All the love I could have given!!!! Stupid schooling!!!
When your motivation is to express profound feelings and connect to others on a spiritual level, you produce art that is truly personal and original. Kate Bush is that kind of rare artist.
As always, a song that is so original, so haunting, after you hear it a few times it will be playing day and night in your head. Kates music does that to me, just haunts me constantly that I have to keep pressing replay. But I love it, I LOVE IT!!!!!
Someday, someone will explain how a quiet school girl from Kent managed to write songs like this.
If she was at a hothouse of musical talent, it wouldn't have come out like this.
If she was a commercial product, she wouldn't have done stuff like this
She is more than one in a million, she has voice for every mood. Mine now is sleepy, late at night and nostalgic - is there a more perfect song for that mood?
Mine too... when I heard that it was her worst-selling album (by the time of Hounds of Love's success), I thought, "typical me... fall in love with the one album the rest of the world had no use for..." But I still feel that songs like this one had a lot of depth. You don't find this everywhere.
Well, from what I have read it's about how people don't tell each other that they love them when they are alive. They only say it when they are dead and then it's too late. So the message of the song is: Tell people that you love them while they are alive.
many many thanks for posting this song and lyrics. since i am not English speaking man, i have been unable to understand the meaning of the song. but now i see what she says. thank you again!

This whole album The Dreaming is a masterpiece of Kate Bush. Better than Hounds of Love. Too bad this was too "fine" music
to so many. I bought it as a new in 1982.
