The bass and vibes solos are fantastic. No one can sit still while this is on.Another great version is on the Newport Jazz Festival album when the crowd screams for an encore. I saw Herbie at he Tralf Cafe in Buffalo toward the end of his career while he was battling cancer. A great loss to the jazz scene.
Had the privaledge to meet Ben Tucker in Savanah, what a pleasant and humble gentlemam. The best grooves seem so simple... but hold so much feeling. Great work.
Wow, I remember playing this at a house party in the 60's and everybody got up and danced . I was surprised because I thought only I liked Jazz. Nice of Herbie to acknowledge everyone in the group at end of the live Village Vanguard recording--Dave Pike, Chick, Potato, Bruno Carr, Earl May, BenTucker and Mark Weinstein.
@catman916: You wrongly list Bob Dorough as co-composer. He didn't contribute to the music; he only wrote the lyrics for the vocal version by Mel Tormé.
This is so Greenwich Village. I can just imagine the beatniks in their black turtle necks hanging out at the Village Gate drinking coffee - all before my teen age years of the hippies replacing this 50s way of life. I must have been about 10 years old when I held the cover of this 33 1/3. The rest of the album which I did not hear till later is just as good - a must have for jazz fans.

I love this song. My usual likes of music usually include Roiling Stones, AC/DC, and the 50's oldies. Haven't heard this song since 1963. Just though of it today and looked it up on youtube. It will be one of the songs that I will listen to over and over without ever getting tired of it,. Just sent it to my twin sister and I know it will blow her away.
Although I'm a classically trained flutist by training, I absolutely love this. It's such a nice change of pace to hear flutists making excellent music outside of the typical norm.
catman916 - thanks for UR response most people never heard if Mr. Pike, I know he played with Mr Herbie a lot, I have this on an old album the original release, those were great times, as far as I know there were two live at the Village Gate (trivia) - thanks again for the response - this still holds up after fifty years not bad...
@persevere4 No, but Dave was on the GREAT Newport album, along with Don Friedman, piano, Attila Zoller, guitar, and a top flight percussion team...it is one of my favorite albums of all time...the group swings like mad, everybody takes terrific solos...the only bad part is that it has to end...and that it has not been reissued on CD as far as I know...
Played this track from the LP many times for friends back in '62. We really enjoyed the "beat" and would shuffle a little next to the record player. The hand percussionist prefers at times to play straight 8ths while the other players stay mainly with a swing feel throughout. That gives the track a quirky indifference I think we all sensed and of course "dug".
I played clarinet and sax before turning to the flute as a requirement for a woodwinds course in college. I couldn't get enough Herbie Mann. I emulated all of his styles and have to say it payed off in a big way. But this style is pure Mann - the delicate trills and easy pattern play and passing tones. It just clicks for me. I'm cool listening to this.
@catandpiddle My all time favorite Herbie Mann LP is Hold On I'm Coming recorded live at the 1972 New York & Montreux Jazz Festivals. This album cooks!
Between 1958&1975 Herbie Man recorded some of best jazz ever heard and now a new generation of young listeners are turned on.

@gracierex1 In my opinion, this album would have to be amongst the top 10 or so of live jazz recordings.
The sheer talent that was assembled for this session is amazing.
You feel like you are sitting/standing in the famous Village Gate
I only wish that i was there to witness this playing. It would have been pure magic,
