You had to live through the eighties to truly understand what Red Wedge was about; it was a very desperate time, and to my mind, this tour had some of the best acts of that decade. Any tour that had the likes of TSC, The Smiths, The Specials, Madness & Billy Bragg was worth noting.
It definitely brought a level of political awareness to my generation, whether they ended up voting for the current crop (crap?) or otherwise.
I saw this tour live. I was a big Billy Bragg fan but hated Weller. I hated the concerts as the musical styles all melded into largeearnestjazzfunkathon.
The mid eighties were bizarre, people looked strange, dressed odd & were strangely insipid. Once Thatcher got her talons into the nation, she seemed to squeeze the life & spirit out of all except the profoundly greedy & the vilely immoral.
weller is a two faced cunt where did he send his kids private school and true met both weller and bragg ,weller is a up his own arse tosser b bragg a lovely bloke ,but today both live in big houses so make of it what u like
It was after the Red Wedge concert in Edinburgh's Playhouse that I first signed up as a Socialist- cost me a lot of time money and effort but something worthwhile has to be worth fighting for
I dont think you're able to comment on this video except for what you see, particularly as you wasnt there and maybe not even born. You have only seen 9 mins of a huge movement to motivate youngsters into being politically aware. I have my own views on Weller apart from this, as I interviewed him later for the student mag and he was an obnoxious git even then.
@ntbrd67 weller is god my mate actualy played on the red wedge tour and said he was a gent,,probably he was fed up with the media and being interviewd by ppl asking stupid questions
I was there in Bradford! Paul W was an arrogant twat and Billy B was the good bloke, and he still is 20+ years on! And the Johnny Marr/Billy Bragg duet still sits in my mind so long after
I was at the one in Edinburgh at the Playhouse. We need Musicians to do this again

Red Wedge was, and will always be, a soft target.
