@mauogi I am not sure if this device will help much cause if the OS is not recognizing the hard drive as a formatted drive you can't get to your data anyway without special recovery software and tools. you would have to do some further research.

@bluetech7753 hey hows it goin? wonderful review! btw i wanted to clarify what you responded to mauogi here. appatarently my very old pc what i believe has officially met its end but im sure my harddrives are a-okay. so according to what you are saying here, if im correct, my master hd with win7 os can not be recognized what-so-ever by default with this ide to usb adapter?

@jdang If the formating it self is corrupt on the hard drive then no other os or newer version of windows will not recognize it as a formatted drive and you will e asked to reformat. Also if the hard drive was formatted with a third party utility other then windows this could also be the problem. either way the data can not be recovered with out special recovery software and you would have look for that or ask around.

@macedonianimation The USB has emough current to power the smaller laptop drives.

would this work with an internal zip drive? It has an IDE connector and a 4-pin power connector like a IDE HD.

@iTech278 Well I have never tried an internal zip drive but I don't see why not it can't hurt to try if you already have this device.

An enclosure wouldmwork but this kit gives you flexaability cause you can work with ata and sata connecters with one device you would need two diffrent enclosures. I just depends on your needs.

i have brought this produt today my hard disc is crashed but when i attach the usb to ide the pc does install the drivers and shows usb massa storage devie maxtor but it doesnt open it and also it doenst show on my computers as an usb drive what to do please help

Yah I think it is a lot better cuase it keeps the viewer ficused only on what I want them to see plus mostly everyone else does unboxings and reviews this way.

I'm not sure if you've heard of these HDD Docking Stations that have the built in SD cards & whatnot, it seems to be a coming & going sort of thing, but how do you think this would compare with something like that? I'd use it to boot Linux to an external disk. I'm also curious if this will take iPod hard drives (for use of booting Linux to my UMPC while backing up Windows at the same time without the need for CDs or flash memory). My UMPC can only take iPod-esque hard disks, nothing else.

I have seen the HDD docking stations before theu ae good to have also but with this device I can also usit to test out optical drives or if I want to make a copy of a CD directly wothout swaping CD's I can instently have two optical drives without opening my case. This device only works with EIDE and SATA it sould work with your umpc as long as it has USB 2.0 it can also work woth USB 1.0 but data transfer will be slow.

SATA is supposed to be quicker then EIDE, but I've always used EIDE.

i dont think so. almost all hardware such as usb controllers, some mp3 players and other adapters comes with a cd for computers with an older OS.

No This device work with windows 2000 and xp and vista it also works with mac if you have an old computer with windows 98 you will need to install a driver from the CD with anything after windows 2000 you don't need to install any drivers just plug and play.
