  • 6 MTH SD-80s screaming their nuts off hauling a long consist. Absolutely bonkers and I love it to bits. A kind of quiet happiness descends on me when I watch things like this- when i think too, I could have parties with this mayhem going on at the same time, if our house was big enough

  • @RufusT9 "Man" ... *Thanks to NO END! You made my day and I sure appr. your kind words! (Happy New Year). :-)

  • Do you mean mth 6 sd80 locomotives have 15 lbs pull? that's incredible that's 2.5 lbs draw-bar pull pull for each engine.

  • @bradstrains Yep, my Scale goes up to 15 lb's and is "pined" immead. :-)

  • I thought that layout looked familiar is that you TommyZTrains lol

  • I am a scale guy but that was an impressive train and a cool vid Steve

  • @cvgeeps Thanks Steve, I appr. it ! :-)

  • COOL!

  • Fantastic video!!!! It must have taken a lot of time and effort to make this video, great layout to. Thanks much appreciated! hudsontrainman

  • love the video!i have a SD-70 ace engine that i've had troubles with recently with the smoke unit and changing direction so im sending it in for repairs but i still prefer and recomend mth over lionel!keep making the great videos!!!

  • @csx3309 :-) I hope its corrected and Merry Christmas to you !

  • Hey Ive just listed a few of my trains on youtube,,Ibe been collecting for sevral years but dont have a nice layout,,I have from 120 to 150 engines and 3 00 cars or so but never get them out and run them,,I have a 2026 snake train I built from 2 2026's that looks like the challengers listed under "Lionel trains from the 1950's snowmans modest collection" check the 2026 snake out and see what you think,,,love your set up !!

  • Kinds sounds like a 66 on steroids.

  • A lifetime of happiness ... "that's priceless" :-)

  • how much do you have invested

  • I enjoyed watching that... 6 CSX SD-80 LOCOS. Nice touch it alomsot looked too real.... and 126 cars on that freight!!!! Big train lover here...... you must have a huge layout in order to pull that off?

  • I lost count!!! What is the actual weight of this train?! And # of cars?

  • @CookiesAndGuns95 126 cars ... weight ? "no idea". :-0

  • MTH has a horrible tech department. They are the worst. They wont return calls or emails.

Williams Bachmann has the best tech service dept. by far, even better that the best you could hope for, in your wildest dreams. Plus, their locomotives are bullet proof.

  • @franktauk4u As sad as it is, I agree. True their popular, but the Proto Sound 2.0 is digital, so it's made from a computer, most likely not used from real trains, like some Lionel Legacy trains do.

  • I wouldn't want to touch the track with that much juice going through it to run those big bastards. That's probably enough power to jump start a Honda.

  • Luv the MACS ssssssssssssssssssssmokin'!!

  • great vid but why did u buy 6 of the same engine?

  • @JakBal3112 Just got them one by one over a course of time ... VERY common engines.

  • @JakBal3112 I wouldn't say that, notice the numbers are different and those migifigures (or whatever they're called) on the lead locomotive only, not to mention the open door asoicated with the figures?

  • probably cause thats the way real trains are jak,,,next time when you see a real train all the engines will be the same brother,,I have a train set up that has 20 maroon coal cars and then another with 18 black coal cars cause thats the way real trains are,,man this guy has a hell of a set up doesnt he ?

  • i am trying to run 2 sd80 doudle headed they just won't do it there loinel on 80 watts

  • OMGosh 5 stars, you win. What dimension's are your trainset?

  • what kind of transformer are you using

  • @dieseldranker 3 Lionel 180 Power bricks.

  • @trainman707 unclear (your ?) each unit (eng.) has it's own power, smoke, program, spk. and all "listen" ditigally to a "TIU" or "track interphase unit" ... "power" is 20 Volt AC and at a constant...

    Did I answer ? :-)

  • Yes...answered. Doing research for Christmas Display for next year. Grandson has MTH with ProtoSound2. May use again or get another set. I have G Scale outside. Use Aristo TE walk around system.

  • @trainman707 IC ... They are great systems as well, "G" Scale's great !

For grandson or You !! LOL "-) have fun !

  • Sorry, but is this HO or O? 2 or 3 rail? Hard to see the rail in the video...at least for me.

  • I love seeing long consists and this one is no exception. The 6-unit locomotive set looks powerful and the speed is very realistic. This is the longest consist I've seen on a model train on YouTube. Is this the longest consist you've run, or have you run a longer one? Another YouTube user claims to have run a 166-car consist on a G-gauge outdoor layout, but he did not post a video of it.

  • @poopologist96

Was it Rayman ? If yes He'll spank 200 cars and yawn !

  • Man, thats a bummer to hear your having so many problems with MTH. I just put in an order for two HO SD70ACe's today and who knows how long it will take to get em. Although they are the best (when working) on the market. I will take a chance and hope they dont have any problems. Great videos, keep up the good work.

  • @xxxrn Life is great when things are OK ... But when equipment failure arises it can tumble down fast! (With MTH SERVICE).

    I hope yours doesn't. :-)

  • I think Lionel is better than mth!

  • @jjcscout Understand ... But TMCC is terrible!

(I tried and tried ... finally I gave up on it) Ah well...

  • Now, if they could make that in an HO Diesel ;) Really good, and I haven't had any dealings whit MTH.

  • That is as real as unreal gets! Great job!

  • very well done. to be honest I have never ever heard of MTH before... I kind of wonder why? anyway,I checked their official page and I was like WTF? almost 200 for a non-powered unit? these CSX's you got are awesome though...

  • yeah ... their pricey and demand is through the roof!

    Thanks 4 comment! :-)

  • @blindcynic If you don't mind no fancy sounds but a horn and bell check out Williams. You can get a powered unit for less than $200 and it'll run forever.

  • Dude awesome job with this!

  • thank you Sir! :-)

  • agree 1000% !! BUT: When theirs a problem?

"Now your in trouble". :( *Let the begging begin !

  • i loved the video. it's pretty clear u have an impressive and massive layout. i've been into O scale for nearly 20 yrs, and i've been reluctant to purchase MTH locomotives. i've heard the service horror stories. i hope things r better with MTH. they produce some very fine looking locomotives. until i start hearing a change from the hobby shops i'll stick to my trusty Lionels.

  • @jrs1218 I I think Lionel makes reliable stuff- I also think MTH has more options, road specific details, lighting, sound packages, etc.. (as well as in command) for a cheaper price! I buy mainly MTH. Lionel has really highly detailed stuff but only in their expensive Vision line. If you want quick service from MTH, their service SUCKS!! And Midge is nice but worthless!

If you want quality stuff, good service, but can do with out a few less options for the price of an MTH stay with Lionel!

  • I wish you could do a experiment for me with that monster lash up. Would love to see 10 to 15 flat cars OR MORE with 10 pound dumb bells zip tied to them and see if those 6 engines could pull 100 to 150 pounds. I have tested one flat car with one 10 pound bell with a williams dash 9 plus 12 cars and it walked away with it so your lash up should have no problem.

  • You could pull a car (real one) ... EASILY !

  • Incredible! The one thing I truly envy about you O scale folks is the absolutely awesome smoke effects of nearly all locomotives it seems! The only loco's that smoke on my HO layout are steam or extremely broken!

  • This video is amazing! Really much realism, that is because model railroads are the world's greatest hobby. Thanks for posting!

  • agree wholeheartedly !!

  • hey there, big emd fan here. love the 80macs. for a little realism though, try switching afew locos around. nobody in real life runs that many engines elephant style. and loose the caboose. loco's are too modern for that....I'm just bustin' yer beans. great vid. I could spend ours in your basement and want to come back (a lot!)

  • LOL , "I sure appr. that" :-) Never heard the phrase: "Elep. style" ... I will remember next time OK ?

    **You come over anytime !

  • this is the most coolest video i ever seen i love the SD-80's but i really cant tell if its SD-80 MAC or M.......

  • ThankYou! Just SD-80's is all I know .... disinterested after that. :-)

  • theres no such thing as 80Ms.

conrail bought 80macs and CSX and NS have them now after the split.

  • i was wondering Did CSX And NS Brought Out Conrail?

  • yeah they applied for a joint purchase in 97 and CSX got most of the NYC assets while NS got the PRR assets. Last day of Conrail operations was May 31 1999.

  • Ohhhhhhh!!!!!!!

  • i have 3 old school lionel zw will they pull a load like your 6 SD-80's and how many MTH TIU will i need

  • you layout is huge how do you manage it . your 6 SD-80'S Lashed up how many transformers you need too pull all of them

  • Hi, 3 Lionel 135 watt power "bricks" ... That's it.

I like long Trains! See: "Your gonna need more engines"

On that one I pull 166 cars. Thanks ! :-)

  • i like long trains too the longer the better

  • According to my dealer, MTH has recently, within the past months, become far better with their maintenance and repair departments, and that they have re-organized everything in that respect, following a year of serious issues within the company. Generally, I wouldn't lose all faith with MTH; I sent an engine in with a blown board a few weeks ago, and since they've been keeping tabs on it with my dealer throughout the process.

  • AMAZING !! Tell Me More !!! Are U kidding Me?

My God THAT"S GREAT !!!!!!!! Please add to this topic if you can, VERY INTERESTED !!!

I about fell over reading this !! Thanks.

  • Just replied on your channel.

  • WOW, REALLY Enjoyed seeing all that power !!!

  • Nice Tom. I always loved how well SD-80s look in CSX colors.

  • btw

for that long trian to move

are all the locos powered? or just the first one powered and the rest behind it are non-powered?

  • Hi, No.... all units are powered. *No cheating with faked out motorized cars or pusher engine either! :-)

  • how big was the transformer you used that must have taken a lot of power to operate!

  • Two Lionel 180 watt bricks and some blind faith. :-)

  • one word to describe this layout

    SMOKIN..:D

    vry nice indeed.

  • Thanks so very much! *I sure appr, it!

  • Actually, it's a good thing you are telling of your experience with MTH. Maybe they will tighten up their ship.

  • It's been almost two years.... I've lowered my expectation. :-(

  • can you show what the signals look like and how they operate?

  • Hi... "look" There are clips now. (Most people get angry waiting 4 them) *I edit out*.

I use infra red "ITads" (MTH), and work super! Thanks

  • OK, you are right ... MTH is very very nice !!!!

I keep coming back for more !!!

Mike Wolf should buy these vids from you & use as promo. .... except for some service dept. comments !!

  • agree! The difference is: "I want to eliminate the comments"! .... *It's not my way, (To "bash" anyone / anything) .... but I have / had no choice,.... as what other "tool" is there?

*In the end, the Whole things ridiculous!

  • Loving the vids..been out of it for 15yrs, trying to get info. Things have really changed. The MTH systems are very nice[ tec people, I here are the down side]. Now, who wants to get rad of there old stuff?...it will be NEW to me...lol

  • Change is the essence of all things ? :-)

  • Correct on Tech People and ANY "support".... *Your on your own", and that's Sad. Thank's !! :-)

  • ok, Im new to O Scale so, whats the purpose of the 3rd rail (in the middle of the track) Awsome Video too!!!!!!!

  • The center rail is power.... Both the outer are ground. (Thank's)

  • Thats Almost 50,000 HP?

  • 45,000 *remember faulty injector* :-) Thank's :-)

  • Whoops! My bad, lol I've seen something like this for NS near Horseshoe Curve in the past.. Except, about 100,000 HP i think

  • Comment removed

  • Also you had said engines really depreciate in value .... I have a MTH Challenger ...

should I consider myself lucky to get $600 for it??

  • The last Challenger I got was 560. on E Bay... Proto 1's are bringing 250.- 300. pushing it....

If yours is premier that's about right. (I only get premier)

  • I am reposting, this did not show up 1st time...

How do you get all 6 to go in same direction???

I can hardly do it with 2!!

  • Awesome video!! That sucks about your problems with MTH you would think that they would be glad to help someone that buys so much of their product??? I love the CSX SD80's I want one!!!!!

  • Gese Nick, Man this one hit me hard !! ... "That`s what I thought too" ! Try calling them once, *IT`S GETTING WORSE!!!

  • I havw had issues with all 14, well 12 of my MTH locos. Many have been for service several times. My local "repair shop is difficult to deal with, so I have had to send them back to MTH, which takes them 14 to 16 weeks. I want to take the MTH technician class, however, they wont let me. I have met Mike Wolf in person, you know him, I told him of my issues with his product. He did not seem intested to help me. Too bad im already in bed with him. I have too much MTH to switch over to Lionel.

  • Very sad to read this wilks... Thing`s appear to be getting worse!

*Were all MTH repair tech`s* ! *after awhile the shipping $ start`s to add up does`nt it?

So ridiculous to fight over a silly Train! "Just fix the dam thing!"

Why do we have to beg? "ABSOL. CRAZY"!

I feel for you, Please go to: "MTH TCA PT.1 and tell`em ! Tom.

  • this is the best oscale layout and coolest oscale vid ever!

  • i would recommend selling your mth locos right now so when they go out of business you wont have to sell them at rock bottom or worse junk em

  • LOL, Yeah ... I wonder sometimes. I have / had TMCC and new version premise remains the same. "It WILL NOT WORK"!

Some of my worst memories`s are finagling antenna`s and trying to enhance signal strength.... mounting metal under tables, then interconnecting same to "earth ground"... all attempt`s failed.

TMCC IS out for me, all that remain are shelved engines.

  • No, Will not work as a "ground plain" effect develop`s where multi-level Train`s run. The last engine I got was that Die cast Veranda... "You want it" ? TERRIBLE! TAS signal enhancer`s and "re`griding" of power pick`up`s.... * I TRIED everything!

LIONEL told me, Sir: "Your not gonna win"... We cater to the "normal operator"... "that`s NOT you. Case closed. Thank`s ! :-)

  • Mth has great trains and a beast sound system but your right about the attitude plus he always sues lionel. I think calabrese woke up on the wrong side of the bed the day he signed the contract with mth for tinplate

  • Could`nt said it better! Agree 100% !

  • very nice lash up

  • Sure appr. it. :-)

  • MTH makes great stuff, but when I see a new engine I want it seems to always be a lionel.

  • Is that electric?

  • yes, 6-20 volt AC

  • MTH makes good model it's just that most of them are a little pricy and I'm personally not a fan of Mike Wolf but nice vid by the way cool scenery.

  • Awesome display of motive power!!! Great scenery and details throughout. Sooner or later , Mike Wolf will have too face up to the fact that better Service Techs are needed!!! This is true across the board. All brands (we all know who) need better service people.

  • Man you said it!

    * In all my life I`ve never seen a rep. for a company so "full" of themselve`s ...

  • nice train but i dont like mth

  • Yeah.... "I have my moments too"!!

  • OK, Alway`s LOVE your Video`s !! :-)

  • THANKS SO MUCH!!!! U ROCK!

  • i'm extremely sorry about your experience with MTH product support. I agree their products are phenominal. Fortunately, i havnt experienced anything like you have with customer support. That being said, i have 3 DCS engines while you have probably 300 times that haha so you have far more repairs.

  • Great, I hope you never do! Their great model`s and that's a given! This "can do no wrong" attitude must however.... GO !

    *4 outa last 6 engines failed! This can`t happen ever. (thank`s) :-)

  • We were all amazed! Just Beautiful !

    Sorry MTH is so terrible.

  • Thank`s ... "yeah, nothing changed" ... :-(

  • is ur number 803 a dummy i got the llionel version, number 803 also mine isnt nice vid btw i may bput mine on

  • nope ... 803`s NOT a dummy... If I recall it came that way... but it`s 're`addressed" and powered now.... :-)

  • WOW! What an awesome video and display of trains! Thank you! As far as MTH goes.....I hope things get better for you.

  • Tom, this is by far the most incredible model train video I've seen yet!! All i can say is thx for sharing all of your hard work with us, definitely an inspiration to us just getting started. Wish you many years of enjoying it!! Ricky'

  • Again excellent video - showed my dad and he agreed!! 10 out of 10

  • Thank`s again Paul!"Tell Pop I said hello" OK? :)

  • Thats amazing!

  • This was one of the most amazing video yet.

Great job....i was entertained and marveled at the layout and detail.I have a few questions to ask......How many man hours have put into this, from the time you first began upto now?..And how much maintanence is needed to keep this layout operating?...Again that was wonderful.....thanks....Andre

  • I am a big big fan of trains myself and i have to tell you guys did an outstanding job it looks like the real thing and i like the long line of power and smoke! I whish you guys could build that for me!

  • That was great !!!!

  • Your 3rd loco and 5th I believe might be having injector problems, they seem to be smoking up a bit.

Seriously, that was very well done.Congrat for a job well performed both behind the Throttle and behind the camera.

  • Thanks Steve! I like a guy who pays attn. to detail! :) Tom.

  • distributive power. Puttin motors on the rear to help push. We use them on the railroad on heavy trains. You can move more tonnage with less power.

  • IC ... No, all power is at the head and all units are powered. :)

    pushing would be cheating! :)

  • WHAT scale is ?? good video

  • "O" Scale... thanks!

  • I counted them right 126 cars lol wow.

  • I mean Big Boy

  • A big Bor could haul that like a stack of feathers.

  • Actually, It won`t pull this..... *understand this is an extremely heavy Train....

    3 SD-80`s will barely pull...

    (it`s that heavy). Thanks :)

  • nice i luv csx trains

  • nice vid

  • That is definately a massive display of power!

Beautiful layout! Mine isn't big enough to handle the locomotives alone yet, but it's getting there! 5 stars!

  • Thank`s Carmine! Don`t sell yourself short! I saw your work,,,, VERY VERY nice :) Tom

  • Thanks Tom! I appreciate it!

  • Nice vid

  • Everytime I log on I enjoy another of your videos. I'm guessing the check you are about to get from Uncle Sam ("Economic Stimulous")ought to cover your electric bill for a good 2weeks. Once again, great job.

  • LOL Damm flattered Mike, and I surly thank you :) I did`nt get a check that i`m aware of... and your right about the power thing, "their spanking me hard" :( *Love the horn on your "F" unit video! (and your clips to) !! Tom :)

  • I love steam loco's and I think nothing could ever replace them on my layout, but for Diesel engines, those look really cool.

  • Ah,, You have a layout. I like both as i`m sure you do MOST of the time. :)

  • You're one VERY lucky man to have such a collection as this. Although I myself am starting to model in N scale, I still like what I see. Keep up the great work. :)

  • Hi Mike, *remember... With over 40 years in this hobby, "It all comes together" ... *in the end, you do for YOU. Thanks! :)

  • No my friend, thank YOU!:)

  • WOW!!! That must be a huge layout to have a train that long! I love those SD80's I want one and i don't even have a layout! LOL

  • Do you have a ventilation system in that bilding? Awesome video! Jeremy

  • Hey Jeremy, "Yes"... I don`t often use it, but I do. Thanks :)

  • Nice SD-80's!!!!! (:(:(: Did you put the engineer figures there or did MTH? That sounds like a nice recording of a K5lar! (: Keep havin' Fun!!! -Ken

  • I put them there.... "Their real patriots" :)

  • Awesome Tom. It just keeps getting better and better. The law of physics apply. Mass in motion!!!!

  • George man you are so right!!!!! (:

Tom! What kind of powerhouse are you using?

My CW-80 would explode if I ever even dreamed of coupling more than 20 cars! I like the trees on your layout!! -Ken

  • Hey Ken! :) Two Lionel 135 watt bricks and a couple of Z-4000`s on that one. :) Your CW would laugh at that load buddy !!!! :)

  • Have you set off your somck detectors yet? If not you better check them batteries... LOL

    Love'n it mam ,,, Loven'n it!

  • oh my god, 8 sd80's? about how many locomotives do you have in all?

  • Awesome! Fantastic! Did I say "WOW".

  • Awesome Tom. It just keeps getting better and better. The law of physics apply. Mass in motion!!!!
