A Soviet song is a song that one associates with a political system, namely that of the Marxist-Leninist state known as the Soviet Union, which existed from 1922 until 1991.
The Song of the Volga Boatmen is a well-known Russian bargeman's shanty that was first published in an anthology of traditional Russian songs in 1866.
Hey, hey, let's heave along the way To the sun we're singing our song Yo, heave ho! Yo, heave ho! Once more, once again, still once more Oh Volga, you mother-river, So wide and deep, Ay-da, da, ay-da! Ay-da, da, ay-da! Volga, Volga, you mother-river. Yo, heave ho! Yo, heave ho! One more time and still once more. Yo, heave ho! Yo, heave ho!
Yo, Heave Ho! (Russian Folksong) Yo, heave ho! Yo, heave ho! Once more time and still once more, Yo, heave ho! Yo, heave ho! One more time and still once more. Now we're felling a stout birch tree, Now we're pulling hard: one, two, three. Ay-da, da, ay-da! Ay-da, da, ay-da! Now we're pulling hard: one, two, three. As the barges float along, To the sun we sing our song. Ay-da, da, ay-da! Ay-da, da, ay-da! To the sun we sing our song.
The boatmen would tug these barge like boats from the shores of the Volga river by rope and this was their song. If you listen to the melody, it is one of struggle and hardship, as them barges are no easy task to haul.
Ukraine and was part of Russia for 500 years and is still closely related. In fact, the first Russian state was called "Kievan Rus", founded in Kiev. Ukrainians and Russians are genetically, linguistically, and culturally 95% related. Imagine if the South had succeeded in breaking away from the United States, that is basically the equivalent to what happened.
@LaNyssa101 He's saying the English equivalent of "Heave, ho! Heave, ho! One more time! Once again!" You should research the translation, it's a very emotional melancholic song that embodies Russian persistence despite the worst conditions (In this case tugging a boat that is 100x your size and weight).
Very good version. has to be one of if not my favourite soviet songs. So powerful, its a very dark and scary song I find to listen to. I can imagine the dark cold night in an icy storm as they row.
¡bravo!, ¡bravo!, ¡otra!¡otra!¡otra!, yah poh, hueon. Hey, friend, you are great, great voice, congratulation!!
Another post. Taking another look at the "Starshin", he looks like a sailor I met in Greece. He was off the "Ukraina". We had a good fight, then a good drunk. We are sailors. =Stefan=
love this...he is not as pretty as the women at the russian restaurant we went for your birthday... but almost as entertaining... sorry about the shitty present on that day
All Right! I learned this song in my High School Russian Class in '98. Excellent Vocals!
