While I think you are correct about HIGHLY MOTIVATED students, I do not think that you are correct about GIFTED students.
Excuse me if I do not know the full story, but an honors class doesn't equal a "gifted" class. You need to do a bit more research. While I am not saying that an honors class is full of stupid kids, because that's obviously not true, with my experience in regular and honors classes, I find that while the honors kids are sometimes smarter, not always, than the regular CP kids.
