There is no doubt that The Jam made a huge impact on music of the late 70's and early 80's and Weller continues to do so. I have always been a massive fan of The Jam but I am sorry to say that in my opinion they didn't do this song justice, The Clash, however, nailed it.
Just my humble opinion so don't reply telling me I am talking out of my arse, if you don't agree with me lets hear your take on it.
Brenda Hollaway version is the best, followed by, Spencer Davis Group, The Clash and the Small Faces. But Im sure there are many other great covers of this classic. The Jam version is a demo that wasnt ment for release. Would have been good to have hurd a good studio or live version by The Jam.
What's a Mod? AND What's a Punk?.....C'mon!!!!! It's all music and like most Pop/Rock music it attaches itself to a "scene" or a "style". I don't think The Who were originally Mods BUT they were drawn to that scene by their Management at the time to become part of a "happening scene" and make them more popular. These things happen all the time in Popular music. Joe Strummer was into alt country before seeing the future of Rock at a Pistols gig.....that changed him profoundly.
Well to all those who dont like it don't listen to then eh ?, We do live in a socialist captolistic society that suppose to a democratic 1 so u av a chioce lol lol,
mine is to listen to it i think it prett cool after all its his version,
Personally, i'm a big Jam fan & a big Clash fan & I would have to agree that both versions suck pretty bad. I'm afraid the only suitable place for this piece of trash would be on a late-1980s Pretenders album.
Personally, I love the Jam...and the Clash...and the Buzzcocks...and the Small Faces...and the KinKs...and the Who, etc.. Among these, what's there no to like?
This Jam vs Clash argument is pointless. And both of their versions of this song are utter crap. (although this one is slightly worse.) Seek out Steve Marriott's Small Faces version if you want to hear the way it's supposed to be done.
sounds like Britain's got talent - Germany's got talent; not even a nice try compared to both Steve's, the dead one and the one who used to sing in Spencer Davis Group - and is coming to Berlin in June o1o; very much looking forward to meeting a Voodoo Chile
Yeah, why should Mick Jones be allowed to write a song about his girlfriend that inexplicably became popular in America? Damn him! Arseh0le! Can't we like The Jam and The Clash? Nah! 'Cuz we're infants!
Personally I think Weller has mullered this tune...should have left it to Steve Winwood or Steve Marriott who had more natural soulful voices...
Having said that I was a die-hard loyal Jam fan and agree with West Ham that The Clash never appealed to the ordinary working-class like The Jam...the raw electric energy of a Jam gig is unparalled by any band I've ever seen...
If The Clash had never sold their souls with that shite 'Should I stay or should I go I could forgive them...
Weller was the true working class boy to come out of the punk scene and the jam were the band for working class britain. I love the clash too but i never understood the love affair with america, how do u get from singing about hammersmith and brixton to 'should i stay or should i go'? By 82 both bands were releasing shit anyway, bar town called malice. The clash yes are more recognised throughout the world but the jam owned Britain.
This wasnt ever going to be something that appealed to the yanks. The clash developed a sound much more appealling to america and with much more universal lyrics. By the time eton rifles had come out the jam were the most important band around.
WestHamBNP, what do you mean by "This wasnt ever going to be something that appealed to the yanks". As song by Brenda Holloway in 1964, this was #1 R&B and #13 pop hit. so it very much appealed to "yanks".
I love this tune. And the Jam cover is great. It was written by Ed Cobb, they guy that wrote Tainted Love, for Gloria Jones, later ruined by Marc Almond and Soft Cell.
First like to say the jam r my fave band of all time. Have to admit when ther jam were first breaking through 76/77 yes the clash were by far a more important/original band. By 78 weller was beginning to find himself musically and lyrically and create the jam sound rather than the more who influenced early stuff. No The Jam never broke America, as if they were ever going to? Their music and lyrics were gritty yet melodic in touch with the British working class.
at the time, the Clash had nowhere near as much impact in the UK as the Jam 'cos the media was so limited (compared to today); it was the Jam who went straight to Number 1, and played on Top of the Pops etc - everyone knew the Jam, only a select few knew the Clash.
that said, I'm enjoying cpj93070's work (altho you lose points for quoting Rolling Stone).
No band touched people of the uk like the Clash and The Jam,speaking as someone who grew up when both band were at their most popular I think you`re unfair on The Clash who embraced many styles ,whereas the Jam remained little englanders(which aint a bad thing)I love both bands.
lol oh my god ur talking the piss right u bitch what the fuck have u even heard london calling for a start one of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time god uve gotta learn up on your rock and roll u noob u dont know nothing.
bloody bitch that s just there well know ones u fucking cunt that jam are fucking shit trying to get in the punk scene when they fucking wernt even punk the teddy boy bithes lol.
