  • The person who disliked this is definitely hurt.

  • There is no doubt that The Jam made a huge impact on music of the late 70's and early 80's and Weller continues to do so. I have always been a massive fan of The Jam but I am sorry to say that in my opinion they didn't do this song justice, The Clash, however, nailed it.

Just my humble opinion so don't reply telling me I am talking out of my arse, if you don't agree with me lets hear your take on it.

  • Brenda Hollaway version is the best, followed by, Spencer Davis Group, The Clash and the Small Faces. But Im sure there are many other great covers of this classic. The Jam version is a demo that wasnt ment for release. Would have been good to have hurd a good studio or live version by The Jam.

  • You could also try the Spencer Davis version.

  • Weller is obviously a huge marriott fan and is superb himself however this is not his best tune.

  • dam i was like workin out clicked a wrong song now i gotta stop to listen to this its like reel good and stuff

  • What's a Mod? AND What's a Punk?.....C'mon!!!!! It's all music and like most Pop/Rock music it attaches itself to a "scene" or a "style". I don't think The Who were originally Mods BUT they were drawn to that scene by their Management at the time to become part of a "happening scene" and make them more popular. These things happen all the time in Popular music. Joe Strummer was into alt country before seeing the future of Rock at a Pistols gig.....that changed him profoundly.

  • the same type of era coming back, same type of feeling as early 80,s , will be if Tories get back in!!!

  • @harrypannell1

the jam is the best band ever no doubt, but man c´mon, let´s listen to London Calling album, just noise? no man, great music

  • It certainly does. Take good care of her.

  • Well to all those who dont like it don't listen to then eh ?, We do live in a socialist captolistic society that suppose to a democratic 1 so u av a chioce lol lol,

mine is to listen to it i think it prett cool after all its his version,

  • Comment removed

  • Try the Small Faces version. Thats what it was based on, and thats how it was supposed to sound,I guess.

  • Personally, i'm a big Jam fan & a big Clash fan & I would have to agree that both versions suck pretty bad. I'm afraid the only suitable place for this piece of trash would be on a late-1980s Pretenders album.

  • I don't like the song. It's fucking boring... C'mon dudes.

  • Personally, I love the Jam...and the Clash...and the Buzzcocks...and the Small Faces...and the KinKs...and the Who, etc.. Among these, what's there no to like?

  • was u a mod?

  • This Jam vs Clash argument is pointless. And both of their versions of this song are utter crap. (although this one is slightly worse.) Seek out Steve Marriott's Small Faces version if you want to hear the way it's supposed to be done.

  • or Brenda Holloways?? classic northern soul..

  • sounds like Britain's got talent - Germany's got talent; not even a nice try compared to both Steve's, the dead one and the one who used to sing in Spencer Davis Group - and is coming to Berlin in June o1o; very much looking forward to meeting a Voodoo Chile

  • this is probably y it was never realeased

  • Yeah, why should Mick Jones be allowed to write a song about his girlfriend that inexplicably became popular in America? Damn him! Arseh0le! Can't we like The Jam and The Clash? Nah! 'Cuz we're infants!

  • classic.............

  • Bloody awful cover

  • what a pratt

  • "They got Burton suits, ha you think it's funny

    Turning rebellion into money" ;)

  • Adding a touch of class to the "Rebellion",

    Which is what it lacked.

  • This is amazing, Paul can play and sing anything and it would be brilliant!

  • Personally I think Weller has mullered this tune...should have left it to Steve Winwood or Steve Marriott who had more natural soulful voices...

Having said that I was a die-hard loyal Jam fan and agree with West Ham that The Clash never appealed to the ordinary working-class like The Jam...the raw electric energy of a Jam gig is unparalled by any band I've ever seen...

If The Clash had never sold their souls with that shite 'Should I stay or should I go I could forgive them...

  • Weller was the true working class boy to come out of the punk scene and the jam were the band for working class britain. I love the clash too but i never understood the love affair with america, how do u get from singing about hammersmith and brixton to 'should i stay or should i go'? By 82 both bands were releasing shit anyway, bar town called malice. The clash yes are more recognised throughout the world but the jam owned Britain.

  • This wasnt ever going to be something that appealed to the yanks. The clash developed a sound much more appealling to america and with much more universal lyrics. By the time eton rifles had come out the jam were the most important band around.

  • WestHamBNP, what do you mean by "This wasnt ever going to be something that appealed to the yanks". As song by Brenda Holloway in 1964, this was #1 R&B and #13 pop hit. so it very much appealed to "yanks".

  • I love this tune. And the Jam cover is great. It was written by Ed Cobb, they guy that wrote Tainted Love, for Gloria Jones, later ruined by Marc Almond and Soft Cell.

  • First like to say the jam r my fave band of all time. Have to admit when ther jam were first breaking through 76/77 yes the clash were by far a more important/original band. By 78 weller was beginning to find himself musically and lyrically and create the jam sound rather than the more who influenced early stuff. No The Jam never broke America, as if they were ever going to? Their music and lyrics were gritty yet melodic in touch with the British working class.

  • at the time, the Clash had nowhere near as much impact in the UK as the Jam 'cos the media was so limited (compared to today); it was the Jam who went straight to Number 1, and played on Top of the Pops etc - everyone knew the Jam, only a select few knew the Clash.

that said, I'm enjoying cpj93070's work (altho you lose points for quoting Rolling Stone).

PS. good to finally find Pop Art Poem on iTunes.

  • No band touched people of the uk like the Clash and The Jam,speaking as someone who grew up when both band were at their most popular I think you`re unfair on The Clash who embraced many styles ,whereas the Jam remained little englanders(which aint a bad thing)I love both bands.

Thanks for posting ,you have some top tunes

  • I agree, Although The Jam did move on into some experimental stuff in The Gift album.

I do actually like The Clash, It was just that other cunt making comments on this videos that put me off them haha.

    Cheers for the comment.

  • @giantplanet i agree with you 100% . mind had no idea the jam recorded this.

  • The clash did sell out you tosser (although i love them too)

they allowed BMW to use should i stay or should i go to sell cars (and strummer was still alive)

SO dont give me that bollocks

they were both important bands and you argument smells like cow

  • Great track mate......but who the fick iz Bob Dalan your man iz in an a bot????

They were trying to break away from the punk scene,

The Clash are very good, but didn't have any staying power.

    The Jam are timeless.

  • Amen to that.

  • i meant the jam lol fucking hell lol.

  • The Clash are called "The only band that matters" by Clash fans haha.

    Look where Weller is now,

Strummer did nothing on his own, his lyrics weren't exactly intelligent. "I wanna riot" Classy.

The Jam were mainstream for a reason, They're the best.

  • what god u people are fucking nuts if u think this shit band can compare to the clash london calling on its own can piss on all the jams songs u noobs.

  • haha, what a fool

  • I disagree.

The Clash appealed to one group of people,

The Jam, everyone like's Town Called Malice,

Well maybe not you, but then again you have no taste.

You also use the word noobs, very intelligent clash fan :)

  • fuck u prick there are way more clash fans in the world bitch jam never made it in america and lets see lol the clash did bitch suck on that.

  • Fair enough,

You clearly have a huge chip on your shoulder,

  • its only cause they never sold out u bitch they never went on pussy top of the pops either like the zepllin never unlike the jam with there fucking gay teddy boy suits look like bloody puffters they did trying to get on the clash bandwaggon the white riot tour u know about that u cunt on a CLASH tour well looks who the legends are down in history at number 30 at the greatest rock and roll icon of all time by rolling stone beat that u cunt.

  • The Jam were Mods ;)

The Jam quit the white riot tour, because they realised The Clash were just a noise.

You talk like a 10 year old.

  • TheJamandExtras speaks the truth! The Jam first looked up to the Clash and then realised they could be so much better; and were so much better. The Jam are one of the biggest british rock bands of all time.

  • I wish I could castrate you with a brick.

  • Nothing against The Clash, but let's face it, Paul Weller could write better tunes than Strummer Jones, and when Jones was sacked..... they were fucked.

And anyway, what motivates to to come here simply to slag off a band you know you're not keen on? Get a life mate......

  • Never heard this one. Great Stuff!

  • I like this tune as well as "You 've Really Got A Hold On Me".

There is no inferiority compared with the cover of Spencer Davis Group and Small Faces.

Thank you very much for up-loading about a wonderful sound source.

    ※I'm sorry by poor English.

  • Wow this is new to me, never knew The Jam covered this.

    Cheers !

  • No problem!

  • The Clash have a killer version of this on their "Clash On Broadway" box.
