He was, in that he had his daily Radio 1 show which ran from 1977 to 1993. But his contract obviously allowed him to do other work - he was a prolific ad voiceover at the time.
I haven't heard the jingles to 'Connections' and the ITN News at 5.45 in absolutely AGES! How luvly 2 hear them again. And wot else do I like about this clip? Because I get 2 c how the rest of the UK did TV in their part of the country (regional TV is so shrouded in mystery, which makes it all the more interesting and fascinating)
Note that Brian Nissen pronounces "5.45" in an oddly American way - probably because he didn't give himself enough time (Peter Bolgar does the same thing somewhere else here).
Martyn Lewis's tone is nauseating as ever, and at the end he looks oddly like the grotesque Tory candidate in the "Partridge Over Britain" bit of Knowing Me, Knowing You. American tourists were staying away because of risible paranoia that Libya would bomb Britain.
It is indeed Fern Britton, no doubt accompanied in the studio by Fred Dinenage. I've not heard that music since I was 10! Yes it's highly inappropriate for hard news but it brings back childhood memories! Driving past the ex TVS studios in So'ton boarded up and graffiti dawbed brings a tear now I've got that tune in my head.
I moved to TVS area in '87 and they'd really got polished then - Loved Coast to Coast - best double act going for a long while (Mike Debens/Liz Wickham) Factually they couldn't have continued much longer if they had kept the franchise (close to bankrupt) but they were better than Meridian by the end! Look what happened then? Local ITV is dead - practically - and what do we get in place? Rip Off Quiz programmes! Even Prisoner Cell Block H was better than that! (oops, finished)
Ah, I've just understood KevCityboy was talking about the ITN headline, not the Coast to Coast one. After all, that baby was still struggling for life.
Anyway, I think Mr Lewis says: Grand Prix Ace DeAngelis or something similar. I know nothing about GP!

How come the Beeb let Simon Bates do the voice over for ITN? Or wasn't he with the Beeb then?

it's Martyn Lewis! Before he left ITN and then he moved to the BBC!

Not long before he left ITN by the looks of the date, seeing that he presented the first edition of the One O Clock NEws a few months later.

Why can't we have Blockbusters and Connections back?
I have to say that (believe it or not) the Coast to Coast tjem from 1982-87 is one of my all-time favourite news themes.

this brings back a lot of happy memories of Television South for me with great continuity thrown in for free.

What inappropriate music "Coast to Coast" had for playing before sad news like that! Glad they changed it into something a bit more neutral in 1987.
