What a beauty!! Love that Inka (inca?) orange...if I ever have cash to spare, I would love one of these, but guess when that happens they will be very scarce, LOL.
bmw should produce these little gems and not change a single thing. the way mini's are being made and sold to the hong kong market. new cars but they look like they are original models
In 1969, I bought a new 2002 the same color as this, Colorado orange. Got it at Vasek Polak BMW in Manhattan Beach. Didn't know how to drive a stick when I bought, but being a passenger during the salesman's demo drive was enough to convince me to take the plunge. Kept it for 20 years before moving to a wet and sometimes snowy state. Some minor upgrades...Abarth exhaust, Cosmic alloys, Momo wheel, etc. LOVED it on dry pavement. Let me know if you see it: Calif. black plate ZUC870.
I had that same car: An orange 2002 "TI" Fairly rare here in the states. Built out the motor with some Mahle 10:1, Schrick cam and replaced the twin 40PHH Solex carbs with some re-jetted Webber 45 DCOC. Bilstien sport shocks, Korman suspension...Fun Car!
You're referring to the US SCCA 2.5 Challenge Trans-Am Series. The 510 was a clone of a BMW chassis and a Mercedes engine. The BMWs didn't win in the US because BMW didn't care about racing in the US in those days. In Europe, BMW raced and won. Today, nobody is paying big dollars for well-restored Datsun 510s.
Oh here we go, somebody's feeling get hurt because their beloved vehicle's honor gets challenged...
Here are the facts: The BMW 2002 was just the last of the so-called "new series" BMWs in the 1960's. The chassis of the Datsun 510 (introduced in 1968) was a copy of the BMW 1600 (introduced in 1964). 1964 comes before 1968. BMW had it first.
I'm not saying the 510 is not a popular car to restore. It's a great design (BMW chassis and Mercedes engine for half the price!). But BMWs take the high ground in both price (a perfect BMW restoration will go in the high $30Ks even in this market) as well as in popularity (the BMW is popular all over the world, where the 510 is really only a US phenomenon).
Google Datsun 510 forums (~65,000 hits) vs BMW 2002 forums (~9,350,000 hits) to see what I mean. Not even close...
@datsunmadman The BMW 2002 (standard,ti,tii, turbo,Alpina), Alfa Romeo GTV, and Ford Escort RS are all quicker sport sedans than a 510. Racing levels the playing field, there are rules and regulations that make it so all are fairly even competitors. All that racing proves is who is the best driver. A fully tuned m10 (2002 engine) without a turbo can produce upwards of 350 horsepower. A fully tuned 510 motor can break 200hp MAYBE.

510's are only cool when you put components on it which already came stock on the 2002tii like fuel injection
