True, the arrow did not have to land on the cauldron (it would have been very difficult considering the angle) but, still, SO MANY things could have gone wrong. What if the arrow went BELOW the cauldron? It took real balls to do this, congrats to the Spaniards.
so what if the guy slipped and shot into the crowd? In an interview I saw, they apparently had a practice session where a man was hit in the chest with the arrow and he died an hour later.
The arrow does not actually land in the cauldron. If you look closely you can see it dropping behind. However there was so much gas in the cauldron that the arrow had to only pass over the cauldron. An ember dropped from the arrow as it passed over which ignited the cauldron.
he actually missed, the cauldron was set on fire by a technician via remote. It was explained in an interview..so yeah he missed but it's the spirit of the thing that counts
@CraigBouchard You see the three bars/supports holding up the cauldron? Between the first and second (going from left to right) the arrow flies behind them. The flame that's on the right side is just some amber speck. There might be disagreements about whether it set off the natural gas or if the technician set it off but it definitely did not land in the cauldron
@whodere if you loook even closer youll see that the light was there before the arrow passed. these are world champion athletes in their discipline. It would be fairly simple to assume that one of the planets best archers could hit that MASSIVE target.
My believe is that the Cauldron is designed to have an exhaust of gas waiting to be lighted, so that as long as the arrow pass through the ball of gas within the vicinity, the Cauldron will be lighted. So it is not remote control or missed. It's designed to be lighted that way. It may not have landed IN the bowl but for lighting the Cauldron, it's a perfect hit! Even hiting that ball of gas from that distance is still not easy!
In Actual Fact the arrow did not land in the cauldron.....its actually planned well...the arrow actually overshot but no one was hurt but i think its a guy that has a remote control or something to light up the flame....NO offence to anyone just telling :)
I watched this with my family when it originally aired. Watching the opening ceremonies together is something we always did - and this was the COOLEST lighting of the torch any of us had ever seen.
I watched this with my family when it originally aired. Watching the opening ceremonies together is something we always did - and this was the COOLEST lighting of the torch any of us have ever seen.
I never forget this ever. I was 13. I loved everything about the Lighting Ceremony. It made me want to be an Olympic Torchbearer. Just brilliant, wonder what London 2012 will do with the cauldron - can't wait for next year xx
@nixxxon18 Well I am English, I want to see what London 2012 will do with the Lighting Ceremony but I agree with you that they won't beat Barcelona 92. Barcelona was special in its own right. 1996 was emotional with Muhammad Ali - it's hard to choose a favourite!
@twintowersbabe i dont think 1996 was any good. Yes Muhammad Ali was a great sportsman, but cmon, the rest was crap.
For example they can do a similar thing like barcelona (throwing something into the cauldron) but the impact wont be the same, as it wont be the first one... thats why I think it's extremely hard to beat.
@nixxxon18 Hmmmmm - maybe David Beckham could kick a flaming ball into the cauldron!!! That's a possibility!!! But I hope they will use meaningful symbols similar to Barcelona 92 but I don't think London 2012 will do this! Wait and see. What about Athens?
@nixxxon18 Well, I saw a comment somewhere that Athens Cauldron had many sexual references. I didn't see it before but I can see it now which makes me giggle a lot. I can't believe that Athens went ahead with this and treat it like nothing. I bet people were laughing while watching the ceremony.
I remember watching this and all hairs stood on my back in 1992 when he shot the arrow. It's like everyone sucked all the air at once in anticipation... then FIRE!!!
This will be the best lighting ceremony of the Olympics forever!
This is by far the BEST Olympic lighting ceremony Ever! Absolutely stunning, inspiring and moving! The BEST! Unforgettable! Congratulations, Barcelona! :-)
Tenía 12 años cuando lo vi por televisión, desde Chile. Hasta ahora no ha habido ninguna inauguración de los juegos Olímpicos tan emocionante como la de Barcelona 1992. Maravilloso.
@rc7t322 Antonio Rebollo's arrow did not light the natural gas rising from the cauldron. It was done via remote control. Rebollo deliberately overshot the arrow for the safety of the spectators. It kind of hurts when you know the truth. But still wonderfully executed.
@49fiori Then the Olympic organizers deliberately perpetrated a fraud on the world, didn't they? It may have been "wonderfully executed," but then, so was Bernie's Maddof's Ponzi scheme. They should be publicly shamed, not lauded!
Such a magic, inspiring and beautiful moment.... the americans, jealous as usual, tried to match this lighting four years later in Atlanta, but they simply could not... it takes a lot more than money, it takes imagination and heart to create such emotional images...
kuddos! i give a 10 if i can, many many thanks nixxxon18 for this upload, certainly worth your effort. I'm always said this is the all-times best olympic flame

LivEFirE 3 months ago
@LivEFirE too bad there's no archery discipline where they arc the arrows. A shot like that is very different from a straight shot.
It was staged and triggered remotely though, probably for safety of the audience. Go read about the 1992 Olympics somewhere if you don't believe it.
