What a legend! The part at 1:48 is insane that's a seriously quick part of the ring at the top of the hill. It's hard enough driving this car on this track with the wheel, pedals and stick shifter on GT5. Doing this in real life requires true skill and bravery. He must have balls of steel to drive a CTR YELLOWBIRD liie this!! BIG respect!
That's one angry fucking car. When it loses time on the oversteer it growls, and claws up the rubber making that time back on the exit. Fucking brutal.
@shaggyC5Z06 If i'm not mistaking Walter Röhrl was driving this. He was a famous rally driver in the groupe B rally days. These days he's the main test driver for Porsche.
In this car, with these tires, I'm pretty sure a lot of the sliding he did was actually very, very fast. (as fast or faster than you could do trying to keep the car in grip, because of it's balance and grip level) not in every case, but in many of these.
@TKDWolf My first car was an old 911, and generally the rule was "slow-in, fast-out.) There is such a fine line in those cars between power-on understeer amd drop-throttle oversteer, that its hard to be consistently fast.
But, having all that power in a 911 to be able to cause power oversteer seems like the ticket. My car had probably 1/3 the power that RUF does, so I never got the pleasure ;)
BTW, RUFs were originally 911's, not 930's. RUF preferred the low drag, slimmer bodies of the 911.
The poor guy has no home! He's got to sleep on the track in this car. I bet he was actually sleeping throughout the making of this video. Check the mirror, his eyes are closed! ;)
@allen4523 People "dislike" this video because the description is wrong and it's a copy of another youtube video. I think youtube should have a flag to help remove all the idiotic copies that people put up.
I understand how you might think that, but remember the video is very old and tire technology has come a long way since then. The driver is very talented, but the car makes too much power for the tires...
Amazing video; although the car is neither a 993 or a 930. It was built on the normally aspirated 3.2 Carrera platform. That is, two generations prior to the 993.
It's awesome to see actual, real, skill-based inertial drift...not skidding, which is what 99.9% of people who drive Skylines and and Supras mistake for drift. This is actual skill.
this guy is a hell of a monster in driving.. a car in such conditions.. at such high speeds.. not a single mistake.. it's the best video of insanity.. no seatbelt xD no helmet.. no shoes! xD just a fuking big load of balls and hands.. my respect.
Also, among skilled drivers one may be able to take adventage of the 930's instability like Stefan does while the same driver may think a skyline is too stable and cant go as fast around the bends, while another may constantly spin out or not be able to reach the limit in a 930, while being in the Skyline he can use the extra grip for better exit, to me 930's characteristics are perfect, but the skyline is no sloch, I just love to drift for fastest cornering
hmm, those who post and say the characteristics of the 930 with its slight understeer to snap oversteer is a problem, I see it as a fantastic characteristic that if utilized properly (like Stefan) can lead to an experience like none other. I hope Porsche looks back and realizes this is not at all a problem but is enjoyed by some of us, if you want stable grip get a Skyline or NSX or M3 or Audi R8 or M5... but dont make cars conform to one performance spec, thats boring
A little lesson in cars is in order I see... this is the infamous RUF CTR Yellowbird, based on a 930 porsche with a 3.2, bored to 3.4 and equipped with twin KKK26 turbochargers, so yes it's VERY powerful. Second of all, it's a 2nd generation 911, which means it undesteers severely, and snap oversteers on trying to counter the understeer, dub that to nearly 470 bhp and you'll have your answer. The driver did insanely good on a car like this
Well let's try something different. Talking about 2nd 911 generation? What I know is that those cars have very much changed from predecessors: just take a simple 3.2.
I hope you've driven one at least once, just to understand it is GLUED to ground.
Ok, now: from 930, steers are modified in order to resolve that understeer you already have in 3.2, so.
I guess setting from 930 (and for yellowbird as well) were much up "racing-style"....not this one
Its not the STEERING that created the problem, it's the weight of the engine on the back wheels, that makes the front very light, without enough pressure to cause natural oversteer on entry. Braking solves the problem, by loading up front wheels, turning in, and creates another UNLOADING the rear wheels, allowing the whole weight of the engine act as a pendulum, because of less grip on the rear tires. Physics. Porsche 997 have this problem STILL, and yeah, I've driven a 964 on a track. I know it
And to that comment that you deleted. It's silly to compare a Fully S/L, rather comfy-ish heavy Yellowbird with 2 KKK turbolag generators to a late model RSR, which is not only stripped to be as light as possible, but also runs racing grade suspension, engine, gearbox, tires and aero. Besides Rohrl is pretty much THE Racer of the century with his skill being unparallelled, and he knows his way around "The Mother" and about bad road conditions more than most modern day GT-R class GRIDS combined.
Maybe it's just my point of view but as I see Walter Rohrl drivings on wet Nurburgring with a 3.0 RSR (ehm, talking about bhp?)...doesn't look definitely like this.
Dude, check your facts before posting anything, 964's were built from 1990 to mid 1994. This Ruf was built in 1985. I'm not saying it is a 930, because its not, its a twin turbo 3.4, the only thing it has in common to a 930 is that it is turbo but thats it.
If you read my post properly, I said that the only thing they have in common is that IT IS A TURBO 911, not that is shares the turbo... and by the way, if you can't post a reply without profanities or "your a loser" comments then please spare us all from you "witty" know it all attitude.
i dont have a witty attitude, you just attack me over stating something that 5 other people did then you are kinda a cock sucking retard. and the 911 964 came out in 1989
It's a RUF modified 930 Turbo. 3.3L Turbo engine, 4 speed tranny. They cut down the rear fenders for aerodynamics. I have an '88 930 Turbo. I love the fat-ass on my Little- Bitch. Yellow-bird is way-faster, but I can't afford time on the Neurburgring. I win most "Stop-light" races here in Vegas. I think mine looks sexier.
Your also Wrong RUF made the CTR from a Carrera 2 with a 3.2 L Engine and opted with twin turbochargers. They chose the carrera 2 because of its lighter weight in comparison to the Turbo The name Yellowbird was coined because of its distinctive yellow color and the sound of the blow off valve being simmilar to that of the chirp of a canary.
Actually, you are wrong, the CTR-2 was the Carerra 2 model. The Yellowbird was 3.3L, I.E. 930 engine, this is the first gen. RUF. The one they call the Yellowbird. 4 speed tranny too.
I was talking about the First CTR nicknamed the Yellowbird. It was a Carrera 2 with a 3.2L engine and they enlarged it to 3.4 and added twin turbos (I dont know if they are sequencial) they gave it an inhouse made 5 speed manual transmission and coated it with some of the 930's body panels.
I was talking about the First CTR. It was based on the Carrera 2 and had body panels "like" that of the 930 thats why so many people mistook it being based of the 930. And yes I have checked and doublechecked my facts.
Ok 'Tard! This is the Ruf CTR Yellowbird. Get your facts straight dude, not the CTR-2. '86 model. Built around the 930 Turbo of that year. Ruf started naming all of their cars "Yellowbird" after a journalist saw this car at the 'Ring, and dubbed it the "Yellow Bird". The CTR-2 was based on the 993, different car than this one. Err, You Loser!
Red, You-tube has caused this harshness from you I think. My "Tard" post was directed to "Detoyato". You-Tube doesn't file all posts in order sometimes. You are fighting my argument about the CTR-2. I'm a 930 owner. I know the CTR was built around the 930! My post was correct, but not aimed at you buddy. You have it right.
You are absolutely correct about that. The CTR-2 was based on the 993. The original Yellowbird from RUF was just called the CTR. It was built around the 930 Turbo. 4 speed tranny, 3.3L Turbo engine. This video is the original Yellowbird. A reporter nick named this car Yellowbird when they took it out for track day. The name stuck, and all Ruf Turbos are known as Yellowbird now.
all of them? no, the only car called the yellow bird was the ctr. the rest are ruf cars with there own names. the yellow bird was based of a 3.2 carrera, the main reasons being it has a lower curb weight then the 930. The 3.2 also had the 5 speed trans case.
I agree. This was the only car that should be called the Yellowbird. I don't know where you guys are thinking that Ruf bumped up the 3.2L engine, it was the 3.3L engine all the time.
Ok, I'm going to correct you all lol... the engine is based on the 3.2L unit - bored out to 3366cc. It (the 87 CTR) used a 5 speed box of RUFs own design. The built and offered a 5 speed box for 911 turbo from 1981 onwards. The CTR also had the DME fuel injection system form the 962 racer.
In additon, RUF rated the car at 469BHP but the one used by Roser had (by RUFs admission in later years) "much more than that". Also the footage of Roser at the ring was shot in 1989. Another little face, 211mph is the speed everyone knows (recorded by Road & Track) but it went quicker at Nardo Italy when it topped out at 212.5Mph.
Hmmmm. That's not what I've read. What are your sources? I've never driven, or even seen one in real life. I'm going by what I have read. Are you sure? you sound like you are. I want to see where you got your info. I have an '88 930, I want to believe that the Ruf was built on that.
Due to its 20th birthday media was full of infos in 2008: engine was based on the 930 (3299ccm) with bore 98mm instead 97 = 3366cm, two KKK K26 charger for max 1,15bar => 469hp @5950rpm and 553Nm @5100rpm with min 400Nm from 2500...6000rpm. Ruf-modfied 930 4gearbox to 5 gears and longer 4,00 axle ratio. Chassis was a standard 911 with rear arches stretched by 25mm per side. In this vid it is the Ur-YeBi with its inlets on the rear arches @2:12 but this did not work.
Yes because at certain High speeds The fast flowing air around the rear haunches together with the shape of the car caused a vacuum to form and actually pull air out of the ducts instead of pushing it in!
As I started watching I didn't think he was very smooth from a racing perspective, but as it goes on you realise he's driving that way as a demonsration of the power and handling the car has. As Fragdude said, the slides at those speeds are pretty impressive especially as the car looks twitchy as hell, due to no doubt rock hard suspension. Awesome video.
The "twitching" you see in the steering wheel is because it doesn't have power steering- no 930's do. You get direct feed-back from the road. You feel every bump in the steering wheel. It's one of the many things that makes this such a great "Driver's Car". No power brakes either. She's a friggin beast when the Turbo spools up. Really just the most fun you can have in a car. Ruf Yellowbird just made the best car (930) better!
I didn't say the steering wheel was "twitching", I said the car looked twitchy. Since my comment I've now been driven at speed in a 911 and realise it's an inherent quality.
Nice!! Everyone should experience a 930 at full roar once before they die. Do you understand that the car doesn't get "twitchy" now? It doesn't dampen the road imperfections like most cars do. If a pidgeon takes a big crap, you will feel it though the wheel. I hope you get to drive the 930 at some point. There is not another car made that feels like the 930. It's an amazing combination of brutal power, and delicate touch when you drive her right. Best car ever made in my opinion!
I don't think some of the people commenting understand how good this driver is, of the nature of that year 911 even when modified by RUF. He is literaly on the edge of crashing at many times on the tape. Listen to the chirps as he "gets air" many times. He is a legend. You must have driven a race track in real life to understand. I know how good he is from watching this.
he may be a great driver but he's not showing it in this video, unless you count sliding all over the track as good driving. i'd rather see the car doing a hotlap than watch it waste tires losing traction at every corner.
It's actually based on a 911. As you can see it has a narrow body as opposed to the 930 wide body. It runs a 3.3ltr twin turbo and is designated, Ruf CTR Yellowbird. I own a 930 and would love to have the power that baby makes.
Actually, I think the driver is 1 of Ruf's drivers, when I went to see the factory he gave a copy of this video to me also and we went for a ride !!! Amaaaaaazing Giorgio Ferri

I didn't want to delete, just I wrote 3.0 RSR instead of 2.8...which is QUITE different ;)
Of course you're right about the engine wheight: this is a "problem" of most of Porsches, and even much in this case.
Moreover, of course one's OBLIGED to load the front if you don't want to keep on straight..so that the back then follows by.
But I guess you can hold the back much better than he does. That's just overdrifting.
(and I agree about THE racer) :D

the ctr isnt a 930...its a 964 3.2....
red912e 3 years ago
Dude, check your facts before posting anything, 964's were built from 1990 to mid 1994. This Ruf was built in 1985. I'm not saying it is a 930, because its not, its a twin turbo 3.4, the only thing it has in common to a 930 is that it is turbo but thats it.
ady930 3 years ago
it doesnt share the turbo either and you choose to comment me over all the other fucking retards on here saying its a 930?.....
red912e 3 years ago
If you read my post properly, I said that the only thing they have in common is that IT IS A TURBO 911, not that is shares the turbo... and by the way, if you can't post a reply without profanities or "your a loser" comments then please spare us all from you "witty" know it all attitude.
ady930 3 years ago
i dont have a witty attitude, you just attack me over stating something that 5 other people did then you are kinda a cock sucking retard. and the 911 964 came out in 1989

this is not a 993 by the way, its not even a 964, it's an 80's 911/930 narrow body car.
carman493 3 years ago
It's a RUF modified 930 Turbo. 3.3L Turbo engine, 4 speed tranny. They cut down the rear fenders for aerodynamics. I have an '88 930 Turbo. I love the fat-ass on my Little- Bitch. Yellow-bird is way-faster, but I can't afford time on the Neurburgring. I win most "Stop-light" races here in Vegas. I think mine looks sexier.
raidermike72 3 years ago
Your also Wrong RUF made the CTR from a Carrera 2 with a 3.2 L Engine and opted with twin turbochargers. They chose the carrera 2 because of its lighter weight in comparison to the Turbo The name Yellowbird was coined because of its distinctive yellow color and the sound of the blow off valve being simmilar to that of the chirp of a canary.
Detoyato 3 years ago
Actually, you are wrong, the CTR-2 was the Carerra 2 model. The Yellowbird was 3.3L, I.E. 930 engine, this is the first gen. RUF. The one they call the Yellowbird. 4 speed tranny too.
raidermike72 3 years ago
I was talking about the First CTR nicknamed the Yellowbird. It was a Carrera 2 with a 3.2L engine and they enlarged it to 3.4 and added twin turbos (I dont know if they are sequencial) they gave it an inhouse made 5 speed manual transmission and coated it with some of the 930's body panels.
Detoyato 3 years ago
i never got anything tfrom the 930 retard. go back to fighting in the school yards
red912e 3 years ago
the ctr 2 was based off the 911 twin turbo 993. gawd everyone knows that, unless you're a loser!
red912e 3 years ago
I was talking about the First CTR. It was based on the Carrera 2 and had body panels "like" that of the 930 thats why so many people mistook it being based of the 930. And yes I have checked and doublechecked my facts.
Detoyato 3 years ago 2
Err, You Loser!
raidermike72 3 years ago 2
and you're are the biggest retard i have ever meet who cant read.
red912e 3 years ago
Red, You-tube has caused this harshness from you I think. My "Tard" post was directed to "Detoyato". You-Tube doesn't file all posts in order sometimes. You are fighting my argument about the CTR-2. I'm a 930 owner. I know the CTR was built around the 930! My post was correct, but not aimed at you buddy. You have it right.
raidermike72 3 years ago
i have driven a ctr2 and it wasnt a 930 it was a 993 twin turbo, you are thinking of the btr.
red912e 3 years ago
You are absolutely correct about that. The CTR-2 was based on the 993. The original Yellowbird from RUF was just called the CTR. It was built around the 930 Turbo. 4 speed tranny, 3.3L Turbo engine. This video is the original Yellowbird. A reporter nick named this car Yellowbird when they took it out for track day. The name stuck, and all Ruf Turbos are known as Yellowbird now.
raidermike72 3 years ago
all of them? no, the only car called the yellow bird was the ctr. the rest are ruf cars with there own names. the yellow bird was based of a 3.2 carrera, the main reasons being it has a lower curb weight then the 930. The 3.2 also had the 5 speed trans case.
red912e 3 years ago
Ruf "Yellowbird"; '86 original production. 3.3L. Turbo engine, 4 speed transmission.
I agree. This was the only car that should be called the Yellowbird. I don't know where you guys are thinking that Ruf bumped up the 3.2L engine, it was the 3.3L engine all the time.
raidermike72 3 years ago
Ok, I'm going to correct you all lol... the engine is based on the 3.2L unit - bored out to 3366cc. It (the 87 CTR) used a 5 speed box of RUFs own design. The built and offered a 5 speed box for 911 turbo from 1981 onwards. The CTR also had the DME fuel injection system form the 962 racer.
KirstyCoombe 3 years ago
In additon, RUF rated the car at 469BHP but the one used by Roser had (by RUFs admission in later years) "much more than that". Also the footage of Roser at the ring was shot in 1989. Another little face, 211mph is the speed everyone knows (recorded by Road & Track) but it went quicker at Nardo Italy when it topped out at 212.5Mph.
KirstyCoombe 3 years ago
Hmmmm. That's not what I've read. What are your sources? I've never driven, or even seen one in real life. I'm going by what I have read. Are you sure? you sound like you are. I want to see where you got your info. I have an '88 930, I want to believe that the Ruf was built on that.
raidermike72 3 years ago
Due to its 20th birthday media was full of infos in 2008: engine was based on the 930 (3299ccm) with bore 98mm instead 97 = 3366cm, two KKK K26 charger for max 1,15bar => 469hp @5950rpm and 553Nm @5100rpm with min 400Nm from 2500...6000rpm. Ruf-modfied 930 4gearbox to 5 gears and longer 4,00 axle ratio. Chassis was a standard 911 with rear arches stretched by 25mm per side. In this vid it is the Ur-YeBi with its inlets on the rear arches @2:12 but this did not work.
lionelhudds 3 years ago
Yes because at certain High speeds The fast flowing air around the rear haunches together with the shape of the car caused a vacuum to form and actually pull air out of the ducts instead of pushing it in!
Detoyato 2 years ago
the ducts on the back of the car are actually for the intakes for the intercoolers for the turbos which are in the rear arches
HellyBruffy123 2 years ago
As I started watching I didn't think he was very smooth from a racing perspective, but as it goes on you realise he's driving that way as a demonsration of the power and handling the car has. As Fragdude said, the slides at those speeds are pretty impressive especially as the car looks twitchy as hell, due to no doubt rock hard suspension. Awesome video.
iramac77 3 years ago
The "twitching" you see in the steering wheel is because it doesn't have power steering- no 930's do. You get direct feed-back from the road. You feel every bump in the steering wheel. It's one of the many things that makes this such a great "Driver's Car". No power brakes either. She's a friggin beast when the Turbo spools up. Really just the most fun you can have in a car. Ruf Yellowbird just made the best car (930) better!
raidermike72 3 years ago
I didn't say the steering wheel was "twitching", I said the car looked twitchy. Since my comment I've now been driven at speed in a 911 and realise it's an inherent quality.
iramac77 3 years ago
Best car ever made in my opinion!
raidermike72 3 years ago
Was actually in a 964 (early 90s?), but if I ever have the money to buy a sports car, it'll definitely be a 911 of some sort.
iramac77 3 years ago
yeah he is a good driver, cause he is german (mr. stefan roser from stuttgart). have fun, greetings from stuttgart (porschetown).

holy shit .......the guy can drive

yeah. and has some serious balls too...
anaani 3 years ago
I don't think some of the people commenting understand how good this driver is, of the nature of that year 911 even when modified by RUF. He is literaly on the edge of crashing at many times on the tape. Listen to the chirps as he "gets air" many times. He is a legend. You must have driven a race track in real life to understand. I know how good he is from watching this.

A classic video, for obvious reasons.
WebRidesTV 4 years ago
that is the yellow bird though, i think. it has the intercooler slits on the 3/4 panels
fragdude 4 years ago
pulling off those slides at those speeds on that track is not exactly easy in that car. Thats enough to prove to me that hes not a bad driver at all
fragdude 4 years ago
he may be a great driver but he's not showing it in this video, unless you count sliding all over the track as good driving. i'd rather see the car doing a hotlap than watch it waste tires losing traction at every corner.
paradoxbox1 4 years ago
prof drivers which told him the same as you, he gave the answer.
"you dont always fuck to make babys right"
it was a promo vid for ruf and it worked. its even promo nowadays. he said it for real, i just qouted it

i dont know about it being a ctr but i believe it is a "yellowbird". and that isnt a 993. awesome vid nonetheless

'Yellowbird' was a nickname given to the CTR.
Monkeyisme333 4 years ago
It's a 930 Turbo.. Ctr has never come out as 964/965
The second CTR (CTRII) is based on 993.
This car is now owned by a Norwegian guy.
964 came as RCT, but never CTR.
So this is a 930 small Turbo R
Angrende 4 years ago
It's actually based on a 911. As you can see it has a narrow body as opposed to the 930 wide body. It runs a 3.3ltr twin turbo and is designated, Ruf CTR Yellowbird. I own a 930 and would love to have the power that baby makes.
StillLiving1 4 years ago
Now that's what it means to be in tune with your car. Knowing exactly how to push it to it's limits. Great video.
