That's my absolute favourite Kata, I love to compare the way everyone does this Kata. It really is one of those things that shows how a person is. One of my friend does this Kata very nice, gotta love it.
Good kime for what? Speed for what? Control of what? I see no bunkai at all in this kata. Kata represent yakusoku kumite or some persons vision of what is happening. It is supposed to look like a fight. That being the case, what is this guy doing? The JKA made a big mistake when they changed established kata and assigned no rational bunkai. How they grade kata is nonsense. Before you go into lunar orbit, I am a JKA life member trained in Japan. I should know.
@IEKUKATAKA I disagree - I think this kata shows many instances of bunkai. His attacks are consise and he has a god knowledge of this kata. His stance is good and his attacks are strong. His head moves with a sense of purpose - I have seen many a poor kata come from a JKA life member. This kata in my humble opinion is very good
@WestBfella Care to give me an example? How can you say he has good knowledge of the kata, what is the basis of your remark? Can you name one JKA life member? Seeing as how that only takes place in Japan and that it is a private matter, how do you know? Do they have a tatoo? What is good about his stances, an example? Do strong techniques indicate knowledge? Is it possible that you really do not understand original karate, the JKA certainly doesn't?
I never saw anything like that before. It makes no sense to me, like an insane man talking to himself without a sell phone. But he is very good, though. Esepcially to make t hose sounds that sound just like in the Kung Fu movies.
What are you on about "kanabuddy7 The hip movement is there - the more advanced you are, the less obvious the hip movements become but trust me, it's there.
Motobu NEVER practised Tekki- he studied the Naihanchi kata. The movements of the Shotokan version are quite different from the Okinawan kata which Motobu practised. As Funakoshi was not a fan of Motobu Sensei, I would imagine that both would spin in their graves were they to know that you have likened their systems.
I would ask that you review the history of Motobu Choki as he was not the "thug" that many have made him out to be.
Yasaguri, thanks for the comment, I never said Motobu practiced Tekki. I haven't likened their systems intentionally, isn't it a fact that tekki came from naihanchi?
I will do as you say and review the history of Motobu Choki.

I am a black belt first degree in shotokan karate, so I know how hard it is to maintain your hip level through an entire kata, no matter how short.

its a bit wired... I allways learnd that you must keep the same low standing throu the hole kata but he stands up at some points....

Same here. Head ALWAYS stays the same level except for certain techniques.

Good kime, but to much power in shoulders. Lack of skill in using the hips in the waza.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I'VE LEARNED TODAY!!! i can almost do it exactly as he does but i make mistakes.. duuh. its my first time doing this Kata...

If you learned it today it's gonna take you a few years to do it almost as good as this guy does. This is a very good execution of Tekki Shodan.

Not bad. Fairly sharp movements, but a bit rushed in places. The stance is too high for my taste.

Nice to see someone using their legs and hips in tekki shodan.

I dunno. Some movements, yes, especially the knee lifts, but I don't see his belt moving (hip vibration) on the stationary movements.
shoemoodoshaloo 3 years ago
i spotted the same thing, good speed and power but not much hip movement to make it easier on himself.

Yasagaru, you have read to much karate history, a little less reading and a little more karate, did you know Motobu?
cars2scrap 4 years ago
No, I did not know the man, you may want to review my age. :)
However, I did study with his son. And yes, I prefer to READ and STUDY history rather than simply accept the cr*p that NA 'masters' have 'heard'. :)
