amazing story really ,,,,, Victor hugo was amazing he surpassed racine and corneille in real tragedy... it is the ugly but loving against the evil but powerful against the handsome but unfaithful .... Esmeralda is young and innocent she goes for the last she pay the price of her innocence.... the right way to do it was to go with the priest to avoid his evil and betray him with the pretty soldier and than take advantage as much as she can from quasimodo without giving him anything in return
@orlandobabe in the book Esmerelda is, I believe, 14 years old, and she is very much a 14 year old girl. Vapid and shallow, ignorant of the world... very annoying. I thought Gringoire would be her best bet for love, but he turned out to be... not so. Quasimodo was indeed the best guy, but she literally turned him down for external beauty alone.
@ydimkthis True on all that you said but I can't help but still love the story mainly because of Quasimodo, this would have been a great love story, like Beauty and the Beast but oh well it wasn't made to be a love story.
When he realizes that she's no where in the cathedral (and she wasn't as she was either in the boat with Frollo or put into the prison with Gudule), he becomes distraught (mistakenly thinks she's been taken by the crowd) and momentarily gives up. Which costs Esmeralda valuable time, but he had no way of knowing that. He gets up to try again to find her and goes on top of one of the towers and notices Frollo watching Esmeralda being hanged. And at that point, Quasimodo would have been too late.
Of course Quasimodo loved her. He was the only character, aside from Clopin and Sister Gudule, who truly cared about her. But he didn't have the time that he needed to save her. Maybe if things had arranged themselves differently, there would be no doubt that he would have saved her again.
No, by the time he looked down to see what Frollo was grinning and pointing at, he saw them putting Esmeralda inside the noose. He would have been too late to reach her.

Hmm, why not this time. Last part they were putting the noose around her neck. And he saved her. What, you think just because they put the noose around her neck, it means that its too late? She did not die yet! So he could have saved her! Unless if he was unpreppared...
That's the point, he was completely unprepared for what he saw when Frollo pointed towards the gibbet. He had mistaknely thought Esmeralda had been kidnapped by the Gypsies who were trying to get in the building. Also, given the location where he was this time, compaired to last time, there probably was no rope to swing down to. And for him to climb down it would also have taken too long. Assuming he could get down off the towers, whereas last time he probably was in the balcony section.
That's right, because unlike last time they went through the whole set up of her praying for penance before going to the gibbet and being read her reasons for why she was being executed and so on. And after the devastation, caused by Quasimodo, over her - they set more quickly to hanging her.
The musical is done from an allegorical, abstract perspective. In the book, after Quasimodo has dumped the molten lead from the roof and the crowds retreat and soldiers advance, he immediately goes to Esmeralda but notices that, during the fight, she had left the cell. Afterwards, he immediately goes around the whole of the cathedral - trying to find her (not knowing where she is), which roughly takes between 50 minutes to an hour or longer, I think.
how in the world can Pheobus just walk away! And i hate Frollo and Pheobus for letting this happen to her. She did nothing but live a normale life! Nothing was her fault!
not exactly i mean in the novel she runs out screaming "My Phoebus, My Phoebus!" when the guards are there getting her killed!!!!!!!
So she could have stayed alive except she was to stupied so yes she did do something wrong she got herself killed but your right Phoebus is a bitch! But I feel quite sorry for Frollo he was a good man he just got completely carraied away with himself (his lust)
She never said that. She had inadvertantly signed her own death warrant as it were. Her mother, Sister Gudule (she wasn't really a nun, but she was a woman who prayed in a self-barricaded wall), had almost succeeded in protecting her from being captured, but when Esmeralda heard Phoebus' voice - she gave her position away. And she was then taken by force from her mother's arms and when the mother tried to get her back, she was killed by one of the guards and then Esmeralda was hanged.
According to the novel, by the time he saw Esmeralda on the gallows, they were just about to have her hanged. So even if he tried to swing down on the rope to try to save her, he would have been too late to get all the way over to the gallows and save her.
This song should be longer.

Oh yes...Now I understand. Since he thought that those guards wanted to help Esmeralda (he thought it) he wasted his time. Now I understand.
