I have 3 in a box in my room. They're infested all over our university halls. One is quite small and the other 2 are large. The small one I caught recently and the other 2 I've had for about a month now.
They love nestling in the paper I've filled the box with and I feed them dry pasta. Seem to love it.
theres some in my bathroom...i remember like a week ago one of them fell into my bf's hair i was gross yet i found it funny how he freaked out because i told him he had a bug in his hair..
actually silverfish have six legs. the other things you see are it's antennae (at the end of it's head) and it's three cerci (and the end of it's abdomen). they are in fact insects
@clnmyjts Thanks. I found somewhere that mentioned they can live in roofs, which I hadn't heard of before. Maybe it's the related species, the firebrat, that can live in a roof, but I thought they lived near fires.
@andrewburbidge your welcome! I can confirm it via I worked putting on wooden roofs and sometimes the wooden shingle roofs were loaded with those things ( probably not the exact species ) yet Silver in colour, smaller & very simular in appearance..All the roofers called them silver fish...LOL I think they were mostly on wood roof that had moss growing due to lots of tree shade & moisture on the roof top.
@clnmyjts Thank you. I found a page with pictures of both silverfish and firebrats -- I searched for these terms and the link came up top of the page with Google - silverfish_firebrats deAngelis
So, firebrats look lighter and all silver and they live in attics and under mossy, damp roofs as well as near fires, which I think is probably possible for them because fires give off water vapo(u)r from combustion. Is it the firebrat that you saw on roofs? Maybe people got the name wrong.
@andrewburbidge Its been a few yrs ago 20+ yrs tear off wood roof repacement jobs but Yes, I would say this is probably what I was seeing on the wood roofs; Silberfisch - Firebrat (Thermobia domestica) /watch?v=vFwmrafuHZY
There don't seem to be any where I live now. They like a humid environment, I'm reasonably sure of that and I keep the place very dry. I can see how it might be difficult to find some for study purposes. Who could you ask? Someone did say that he lived in student accommodation and there were a lot, I think because of the high density of inhabitants and all the moisture from cooking. An entomologist at a college might help.
I'm really interrested in starting a silverfish colony, any idea of anyone online that may have any for order? (They don't commonly live in this area) Thanks!
my hosh i see these things all over my house ther scarying the shit out of me.. wher they come from!!!!!!!!! wtf crawl on the wall by my fuckin fface bs

For a moment, I thought it was dead. Normally when I poke a silverfish, it runs so fast and disappears in a flash. o_o

@paloiu222 Maybe it knew that there was a downward slope all around and wherever it ran it would fall down.

@clnmyjts I see now that firebrats are not uncommon in the wild, where they live in warm places, such as sunny places with moss or in birds' nests.

@llHyRaXll
Is your house very humid, from cooking, for example? Or is there flour lying on surfaces or in cupboards? That would make ideal conditions for them.
andrewburbidge 1 year ago
