Simple, because the gear ratios are very close - this car isn't supposed to be a highway cruiser. The point of the 6-spd is not lower highway RPMs, it's closer ratios so it stays at its peak HP for more time. Also, the engine doesn't have the most low-end torque, so it helps to have the engine at higher RPMs in the cruising gear.
I truly think that this is a retractable hard-top system that should be used on more cars (the idea) because storing it that way takes up much less space than just throwing the top in the trunk.

Many cars that have a folding hard-top use the trunk space for storage, so not much has changed.
