Kurt Cobain was as smart and as viciously a constructed performer as Chuck Berry, which is the greatest and perhaps most misunderstood thing about him. His songs were simple and hooky and novel. Chuck had his signature duck walk. KC destroyed his gear every chance he had to get on TV. His hair wasn't blond. He custom-made his own clothes - that T-Shirt he's wearing. His genius convincing his audience that he was some wounded, doe-eyed waif. But He was a top-flight entertainer with a unique act.

The sad thing about Kurt Cobain is he mightily wanted to be a Rock Star and did everything he could to become one, but couldn't let himself be happy. Mostly cause he loved junk more than he loved being a decent human being. But he was a very special performer and songwriter, and that's cause he had a lot of talent and a lot of pain, unfortunately. This is a wonderful moment, this performance. It really is honest in showing how effed up and smart and engaging he was.

They started playing Rape Me because MTV said they could play whatever they liked and they were going to play Rape Me, but MTV insisted they played Smells Like Teen Spirit. Eventually they came to the agreement of Lithium, but Kurt did that just as a joke, to piss off MTV. They literally had their finger on the cut off switch when they started playing Lithium...

He then quickly switched to playing "Lithium", the song the band had agreed to play in the show as a compromise with MTV executives. Cobain had wanted to sing the then-new song "Rape Me", while MTV's bigwigs wanted the band to lead off the show with their signature song "Smells Like Teen Spirit". The two sides settled on a mid-show rendition of "Lithium".
