Sharonshay, the world need a big dose of "corny" right now. Their music touched the heart. What beautiful harmonies; and Billy Davis Jr. is such a soul powerhouse.
during the late 60's the 5th D was mhy favorite group. that being said, i fell in love with this musical (the me nobody knows) thanks for this important post. it's so up lifting.
I love this vid and I love and always have love The 5th Dimension. I used to have a huge crush on Ron Townson. After him I have always had a certain kind of love for big men. I am 4'11 and love men who are 5'9 n taller and no less then 190. lol
@FurtherReview Hi, you could very well be right that there is no S on the end. Also, re: Billy's shout...I LURVE when he gets so into a song that he does that. ☺ He does it on the live versions on Stoned Soul Picnic. He does it on the Live album on a few songs. What really gets me is when it's one of the GIRLS who get into a song and they ad lib something or do a little dance step that clearly denotes they are "into it"...My favorite when the group as a whole just breaks it on down is My Song.
Hard to believe now, but in '71, there was real controversy among some Blacks that these incredible people were not--NOT--BLACK ENOUGH! It just amazes me now, watching them, nearly 40 years later! What voices, & oh Marilyn U were THE most gorgeous lady on the planet. Wolfsky9 [ a nice Italian boy]
Okay, let's get this all straight. First of all, this clip is from "The 5th Dimension Traveling Sunshine Show," which was an ABC-TV special in 1971. The guests were Merle Haggard, The Carpenters, and Dionne Warwick. The original show, "The Me Nobody Knows," with music by Gary William Friedman and lyrics by Will Holt, opened off-Broadway in 1970 and ran 208 performances. It featured Northern Calloway, who played David on Sesame Street (David). Bob McGrath never appeared on or off-Broadway.
Thanks so much for this post. I have searched all over for versions of Light sings, especiall a video by the 5th. I don't know how you found this gem, but, tnks a million.
It's okay, you probably cried because you could hear the love and sincerity in the music and this touched you at the depth of your soul. Everything that they were singing about in the 60s is about to come true....then you can bawl your eyes out!
Durn, I was hoping to showoff my music trivia knowledge, but, sgcim beat me to it.
All true. The Me/Knows was the original production. It won an Obie award. (off Broadway) The original cast included a young Irene Cara, and the guy who plays Gordon (Is he the white guy?) from Sesame Street. I saw a college production of the show. It's gr8. Has a lot of other good songs like "If I had a Million Dollars." Hope this info helped.
light sings is one of my favorite 5th dimension songs, mostly for that solo by billy davis. strong, thrilling voice with a powerful gospel-style delivery. and he's too cute for words. yeah, i said it!
i still have the 8 track of them with this song on it i love it wud love to find it cd im afraid the 8 track will break 1 day lol thanks 4 posting this
This was a great special. Before my time, but I was lucky to get it on VHS (I think Rhino also put it out on DVD). There are a few weak moments like the Opera part and Merle Haggard (unless you're a fan of country music). I think this was filmed in Canada. The end credits said it was commissioned by CTV, which is a Canadian network.
Great song for the time at hand.............I love it

Does it really matter? Why not just enjoy this powerful song?!

@MsTexas73
Actually, I believe the line you're trying to identify is simply ... "Into the sun."
That would make sense because it's the continuation of what the kids are shouting:
"... the kids start to shout,/'Brothers and sisters, come out/
Into the sun!'"
All part of the song's theme about stepping into the light of the new day.
(P.S. Don't you love the soulful scream at 2:52?)
FurtherReview 1 year ago
@FurtherReview Hi...I was trying to get the last line of the FIRST verse..The Brothers and Sisters line is part of the second verse.
btw the line I was not hearing quite well is "And HERE's the sun!"
MsTexas73 1 year ago
@MsTexas73 Hi again. Well, that's what I get for reading your request in the wee hours of the morning when my brain was mushy.
However, here's something to consider about the lyrics you were wondering about:
Is it possible that they're doing a bit of wordplay on the theme of light singing ... and that what they're really saying is, "And HEAR the sun"?
When I listen as carefully as my cheap speakers will allow, I just don't hear an S on the end of that word (at 0:36). What do you think?

I always thought the next line is "Enter the Sun" Don't know for sure.

The sun comes up. The moon goes down. A new day's on it's way. The stars in the sky, are wavin' goodbye. And mornin' is here, bringin in the day!
Then the kids start to shout, "Mother and Father Get UUUUUUP!"
Ok what's the next line before they sing "LIGHT SINGS, ALL over the world!!!" ???

I haven't heard this song in probably 40 years!
I have no idea where I heard it, but I thought the words were "I see the whole world".
Does anyone know who wrote it?
Did anyone else record it?
There's nothing corny or contrived about this one.

I did a little research on it, and it came from the Musical "The Me Nobody Knows" by Gary Friedman.
