  • Mr. Thorpe just needs a slap so does his sister!! I feel bad for Mr. Tilney; she TRIED to leave; shouldof done a better job!! Mr. Tilney is growing on me!!

  • Fans self is he carrying a spare bottle against his trouser leg on that country walk???

  • Does anyone know what opera they're watching at 1:39. I want to know the name of the aria.

  • @himashi99 It is the Queen of the Night from Mozart's The Magic Flute. One of the most difficult arias, very high, elaborate coloratura. A much better version can be heard if you search YouTube for this: Diana Damrau sings Mozart's "Queen of the Night" aria

  • @katfitz00 Thanks so much!

  • Thorpe! Go!

  • I thought they wanted to give her a tour of Bath which has many interesting sites. She comes from the country so woods are no novelty. A Pox & Doom to scoundrels and deceivers. :-)

  • I didnt realize the Country Walk was a Pic Nic..... Did you see the size of the BASKET he was Packing????? OMG...

  • John THorpe must DIE...die John Thorpe.. DIE....die die die! LOLLLL

  • may I ask what this is rated? O.o I wasn't expecting the book part

  • @JaneEyre29 this is an english novel/movie, not an american one..

  • @scrubs4everr What does that have to do with anything?

  • omg at the gothic story part where she was reading in bed i was like: O.O

  • for some weird reason the actor playing John Thorpe kind of reminds me of John Malkovich.

  • im sorry but the acting in this is eh...bad

  • John is such a weirdo god......hes sooo creeepy

keeping her away for mr. tilney

  • Mr. Tilney. O_O *sigh*

  • Does anyone else think Mr Tilney's voice sounds a little like Alan Rickman's? That's not a bad thing... ;D

  • I love how naive and unassuming she is... Kind of refreshing after all that manipulation of the Thorpes!

  • but he did stop the carriage in this adaptation :s are they implying catherine's a liar (which really doesn't fit at all if you've read the book)?!

  • It's so "nice" how all the actors in the movie are just as I imagine them from the book :)....love Henry Tilney btw! :D

  • And that is supposed to get her excited? She should of got out of the carriage & met up with her friends.

  • what opera is it?

  • @helenoftroy124 I think its Mozart's "queen of the night"

  • I like this movie in its own right, but when you're reading the book (like I am) and you just want to see your imagination played out on screen, it disappoints. They leave out parts, mush others together and don't display the characters so well. Does anyone else think Catherine seems too flirtatious w/ every male character?

  • "i must enjoy you or die" hmm id like if a girl ever said that to me.

  • This actor really brings Tilney to life. In the book he's rather boring. There no declaration of, "If I loved you any less I might be able to talk about it more" or a "In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."

Tilney is just kind of there in the book. In the movie he's drop dead sexy.

  • Awww JJ Feild and Felicity Jones are cute together. Carey Mulligan and the others fit their characters too...great casting!

  • its intended to be sensually terryfying (an examination of the darkest minds), it was a horrific novel at the time, although not unlike others, and it definately shocked its readers

  • How scandalous<3

  • Tilney is really hawwt hawwt <3 sometimes he resembles hayden christensen, sometimes jude law :// but watever he is pretty good lookin himself :DD

  • I think JJ Field does the character really well. He's out of Katherines league. Makes her look a little insipid in comparison.

  • @elenore88 It's true and yet he's still so sweet to her. And in the end he makes her a more rational person, to a degree. He compliments her so well, which is why they are one of my favorite literary couples.

  • @RoyalBakaness He does, but he also marrys her and has to put up with it for the rest of his life.

He is sweet to her. But it's at his own expense in the long run.

  • @elenore88 but Catherine's supposed to be young and naive....and innocent....

  • @organicskating yes, but that has nothing to do with looking a little insipid when placed with a stronger or deeper personality.

'purity' in excange for depth of character? that's like saying all you need is looks. (for some people maybe)

  • Thorpe shows no decency.................today's corporate sleezebag

  • They're watching the magic flute? O_o

  • I'm impressed with the wisdom of the two Tilney syblings. They have lived though much but they also see the sweetness of Catherine. And if jealously could be defined in looks, the one Henry gives toward Thorpe and Catherine would an excellent example. I also like that the Henry and Elinore seem to be friends and understand one another. I'm glad that Elinore thought the best of Cath. Henry would only see the other man as men do. He read the novel. The "chick flick" of the day. lol

  • @Songsmirth I love the relationship between the Tilney siblings. They remind me of me and my brother, maybe a little kinder to each other (we can be kind of sarcastic ^_^) They are such a nice family despite their hardships.

  • (Trying to sound highborn). . I DO so love to see Mr. Thorpe's face when he's forced to introduce Catherine(his prize) to the general and therein, Mr. Tilney! He's met a more evil being than himself and he knows it almost immediately. He must have gone into high plotting mode that night. And the mother would have had to be in on it. Both her children are there with her approval so I wonder if she isn't the one whose help plan it all. You don't accidently have kids who act like this.

  • Poor Tilney. I got stood up on a date the other day. I feel his pain.

  • @canadarox14 I'll get you a bat. . . :) Sorry to hear that happened. I actually know two young men who accidently got themselves into the position of asking and being asked to their proms with two different girls. One was like a son to me. He'd asked a girl, who said yes. Then another came up and asked him and he didn't have the heart to say no! The same thing happened with the other boy. Came to us for advise! Only saying this to make you feel a bit better. .

  • "I should blush to tell you..."

Yeah right, I doubt she can blush!

  • Thorpe is SUCH a creeper! Ew. And his sister needs a good slap across the face.

  • Never has a parson (church pastor) been as sexy as Mr. Tilney lol

  • @bookiee8 You don't think Mr. Collin is sexy???? (lolololol)

  • @Songsmirth Mr. Collin is the biggest creep of life LOL

  • @bookiee8 Yes. I forget that people can't hear my sarcasm! lol It was my own little joke. In all the various movies I've seen they've always, always got an actor that was a fun Mr. Collins! Even in the Indian version called, "The Bride and the Predjudiced" the Mr. Collins was soooo funny! If you all haven't seen this movie, run and get it now! It's wonderful and the music is great. Quite the production. :)

  • especially in the newest version

  • that opera singer has pitch issues. not hating. just saying.

  • @MicheleDoenges I agree. My ears hurt every time I don't fast forward quickly enough! lol They flubbed up on the casting of that singer. :(

  • The song at the opera they went to..... 2:00 wut is that called???.... the song...

  • @Yankeez001 yes i think is It's Der Holle Rache (Queen of the Night)

    youtube.com/watch?v=_ufeyarJxNQ

  • @manebellamy :

    Ohh thank u VERY much!

  • Thorpe's eybrows make him look like a troll...And god I hope he nver smiles again...he's giving me nightmares!

    And Tilney is soo sexy!!

  • Does General Tilney strike anyone else as a pedophile? Or maybe just a little rapey...

  • @K0feeKrawl yes he does-its like most of these old geezers see young supple barely legal flesh and their skin not to mention loins catch a flame.

  • whats the book called?

  • @naitomea111 Northanger Abbey. same as the title of the movie.

  • @TheDarkSide1577 oh sorry no i meant the book she reads and i found it it's called the monk thx anyway :D

  • Their looks at 5:16 are so cute! Mr. Tilney is extremely lovable... I don't see how such a teasing, charming guy could be a clergyman and give serious sermons.

  • Henry, Henry, Henry...One of My favorite J.S. characters. He's so NORMAL, it's appealing.

  • Mr. Tinley's mouth needs a right proper kiss!

  • to see extraordinary queen of the Night watch Diana Damrau in the Covent Garden performance!!!!!

  • oh, my gosh!! The Queen of the Night in the opera scene is TERRIBLE!! She's way off pitch, it's serously hurting my ears!!

  • I agree Thorpe's a creep, and as for the singer sour note, consider that this is just a PBS special.

  • Oh, that opera lady's high notes are piercing my ears in the wrong way!

  • @AVBKansas it sounds a bit off to me, but I haven't listened to The Magic Flute in such a time. Maybe it IS supposed to sound like that? O_O

  • Thorpe is a creeper and a jerk....

  • The guy playing Thorpe is not COMPLETELY a lost cause. If he re-shaped his eyebrows less severely, and got the teeth situation under control, he could be a prize. As far as the the character goes.....I'm at a loss!

  • Thorpe is such a jerk!!!

  • Her high notes are flat and it's getting on my nerves.

  • @rcbpiccolo I agree. Voice Overs are your friends when you can't sing the notes for a movie.

  • John Thorpe and the Opera Singer, aka Toad-Man falls in love with Toad-Woman, lol

  • @fangirl4eva1 you're clearly not Thorpe's fangirl4eva! XD

  • I've met too mant John Thorpes in my life! John Thorpe is like a modern man: aggressive, bad language, bad manners...! Henry Tilney....he's the man of our dreams!

  • @missunafraid13

It's funny, i've also met many Isabella Thorpe's! And they are like many modern women: Unpolished, sullen, withdrawn, bad language (oh yes) drink too much and wonder why love doesnt arrive for them quicker than it does. Perhaps someone should inform them it works both ways.

  • @Woodlander65 Unfortunately, that's also true! One must find the pefect match ;)

  • @missunafraid13 but shall we ever meet the man of our dreams...? that's another story.

  • If that were the most shocking books with sex at that time, they would be surprised if the knew about the books I`v readxD

I read the "Earths Children" series when I was like 10/11 or something..

Not the best things for a litle girl to read^^

  • @LilianaCroush well they were very modest in those days. i'm actually suprised something like that was even published back then.

  • LOL, having trouble sleepin after that

  • Hey the guy who plays Mr. Thorpe was on Robin Hood BBC season 1.

  • @DancersAreCool yep hes also in casualty now aswell. I think hes really cute :)

  • 'The amorous monk'? Now that's just creepy. There is nothing sexy about a voyeuristic monk who cries out "I must possess her!" when he sees women undress.

  • @Minty210 Reminds me of the Thorn Bird series I saw as a kid. :) Very scandelous at the time. lol

  • its carey mulligan??!?!??!?!

  • Isn't that music Mozart? at the opera?

  • @baroquemusician1 It`s from "The Magic Flute" I think it`s The Queen of the Night whos singing^^

  • does the man always have to say damn or dammit with every sentence?

  • @kadoo430 omg yessss i want to strangle him personally.

  • @kadoo430 Apparently he thinks he does, it makes him even less likable, we are not supposed to like him anyway.

  • Thorpe, from the spanish TORPE....

  • aslkdjfhklsadfh

  • mr thorpe is an animal!

  • Well I Always though Darcy was my favourite, then Mr.Knightly, Now I think its Mr. Tinely. Hes Just So Wonderful, That Smile :) I've gone to mush :)

  • @randomkisses16 Mr. Darcy will always be my favorite:)

  • @Nala162024 Interesting you bring him up. humm. Not to play devil's advocate but I like JJ's rediction of Mr. Tilney better. Darcy is a little too cold for me. Tilney is more open. :) / It's interesting that the general didn't inquire about Catherine to Mr. Allen but went straight to Mr. Thorpe. An old devil that recognizes a young one. One with power who just stripped away all the younger one's easily. Well, not all quite yet. .

  • he oido mejores versiones del aria de la venganza

  • Henry Tilney is one of my favorites! He's as amazing as Darcy!

  • Mystery of Udolpho in 2 days? Pshaw, right. No way could you finish that in two days, the thing is like 600 pages with tight print (interesting novel tho)

  • they are watching the opera the magic flute that is in germen instead of italian since that one was writen that way.

  • the opera singer was a bit sloppy with her runs

  • this girl has a very vivid imagination and she certainly reads too many bad books,or as we say nowadays..she has seen too many films...

  • @june251979 well I think that the stuff she was reading probably wasn't half as bad as the stuff that's out today lol.

  • Mr. tilney is so cute!!! :)

  • Mrs. Radcliffe? LOL

  • Thorpe is a cockroach!

  • The girl who play Isabelle is the sameone that plays Kitty in Pride and Prejudice 2005??

  • @Ixchellita I guess so!

  • Comment removed

  • i knew it Isabelle is kitty from pride and prejudice 2005 wherein kiera knightley played elizabeth bennet. oh wow how much she changed!

  • the opera sounded ok to me

  • poor catherine:)

  • whats this thorpe up to...whispering in the captains ear...hes soo annoying..this actor is good at playing a jerk...

The opera singer is not out of tune people..I think BBC can afford an opera singer they are not that expensive especially for 1 minute of air time

  • 'damn fine looking woman' pahshaw what a ass. OH BUT MR. TILNEY!!!

  • The singer in the opera sounds like she's straining and her high notes don't sound like she's confident.

I'm not an opera buff though, just my opinion.

  • Well, that is a damn (haha) hard piece and only very professional singers accomplish to sing it properly. I doubt Northanger Abbey had the funds to get a true professional ;)

  • @KleiMo1991 ...we had that opera in my hometown and they sang it veryyyyyy well..so if my hometown can afford that, then they can too, i think

  • @Lilithly: Luck? :>

  • @KleiMo1991 ...what?

  • damn!!! Tilney is howttt as helll!!!(: seksiii!

  • O YES!!!!

  • look at how creeped out the generals kids are!!!!!! hahaha! such a tell tale sign of OH SHIT1

  • hahahaah OMG. John Thorpe is hilarious in a disgustingly rude way!!

  • I'm an aspiring opera singer(meaning I'm still learning) but that singer is out of tune.... quite a bit....

  • @BeeVan19 Yeah it's pretty obvious and I'm not even a singer.

  • i think its quite skillful. imagine yourself trying to achieve those notes.

  • regardless of whether they are in tune with the music

  • yea out of tune and nearly squeaking

  • I love that they used the original german version of 'the magic flute' :D

  • tactful, eleanor

  • why is thorpe talking with the father?

  • Thorpe needs to get out of here.

  • Tilney is charming-Thorpe a creep

  • I mean "The Magic Flute"..I was thinking about "La Traviata" for some reason...sorry,sorry..eheh

  • they are watching "La Traviata" in the theatre..ahha..I watched that opera about a month ago...it's amazing..

  • in the bedroom...the other woman is tilney's sister?????????? or what??

  • No, that's Isabella Thorpe. John Thorpe's sister.

  • @tinchika1 Thorpe's sister.

  • ... all of them.

  • This women has some issues!

  • Who?

  • Hehehe....I just love Mr Tilney's concealed amusement when Catherine makes her apology.

  • The actor who plays Mr. Tilney does amusement - concealed or otherwise - charmingly well!! I actually believe him to be Mr. Tilney when I'm really into the film!

  • Thorpe's face at 3:59, when the guy walks away, is hilarious.

  • Hmm...I don't know if I'd be saying my brother's favorite book is The Monk to a girl he's trying to win...

now he just seems a bit pervy.

  • I agree entirely!! Then again though he is a bit on the pervy side isn't he?? :)

  • "go on, don't wait for me"

    * ...

    * walks on.

  • Never understood in the novel why Thorpe shot himself in the foot like that with General Tilney.. was it just to feel himself important? But why would Tilney Sr. ask information of icky Thorpe???

  • just pride ... He was sure he was going to marry her.

  • The Magic Flute... very à propos....

  • I don't think those extracts are from the real novels...

  • Tried reading "The Monk" gave up after 50 pages..

  • The books that the two are reading are quite disturbing. The fact that torpe is reading them should clue Catherine in that he is not good company.

  • I would say there are easier clues than that as to his undesirability...

  • First she was reading The Mysteries of Udolfo, than after, The Monk.

  • The book is "The Mysteries of Udolfo" by Ann Radcliffe, 1794, when a new genre of horror came about in the late 1700's. You can check the book out on wikipedia. Also, you might enjoy the movie "The Jane Austen Book Club" where there's a sort of Halloween scene about it which is cute.

  • That movie was great, and I loved the scene.

  • The movie skipped the part where John thorpe and the rest tried to persuade Catherine to go to Blaise castle again....it was quite a significant scene which is weird that they excluded it.

  • I agree, I was proud of Catherine when she showed so much backbone in that scene. It was the first step, to my mind, of her maturing as a person.

  • I'm curious to know what's the book that Catherine was reading. it sounds really interesting (even if it might have some perverted stuff in it).

And yes, John is annoying. He's like a jealous schoolgirl lol.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh, just kiddng, sorry. The pervy book is The Monk, by Matthew Gregory Lewis.

  • shame on them !![catherine and torpe]

  • I hate the books catherine and torpe are reading !!

this is such .....not ..good at all !!!!!!

  • must have been nice back in the day, going to the opera and walking at your leisure, not really working at all

  • in how many parts was this aired I wonder..

  • thanks so much for posting! this is one of my favorite jane austen stories by far :)

  • battle of the siblings!

  • what is thorpes issue?? can't he say anything but damn???

  • I know! He's ridiculous! I'm guessing it's a way of slightly revealing true character.

  • my god, isabella's boobs look like they're about to pop out. i keep wanting to pull her dress up lol.

  • blek @ Thorpe
