  • Excellent!

The trick to doing this is to have everyone not involved with the watercan well back, exactly as shown/advised in the video.

I've heard of a similar trick using a whiskey bottle filled with water and gasoline; it really makes a mushroom cloud.

  • I think you should mention to check over head to be sure there are no branches above. This is best done in an open space. Not as big as flying a kite, but a look up, before the fire shoots into the air is important.

  • When I was a kid back in the 1960's my Mom would take cans of bacon grease to a place in our town where it would be recycled for something related to bombs. It was right in the midst of the cold war era when we still had weekly air-raid siren tests.

  • Nice effect. One very frosty morning I needed a quick and guaranteed fire in fire pit on a lake shore. I put firewood in a cardboard box, poured on cooking oil, bacon fat, and went to the lake. I placed the box in the fire pit and lit road flare, to light the fire.

  • Another equally dangerous trick to do while sitting around a camp fire is to throw boiled candy into the fire, they get hot and explode sending boiling sugar in to the faces of the people around the fire, (russian roulette for people who do not owna gun). Placing an unopened can of spaghetti hoops in the fire sends you home round burns on your face- like ringworm. I did both of these when i was a boy around a camp fire, I wish I had thought of the grease bomb trick!!!

  • We do it for entertainment and educational reasons not the thrill of dangerous behavior. This is only dangerous in the same sense as driving a car or shooting firearms are dangerous activities. All danger lies in how you do it. As you point out there are many dangerous and stupid things that can be done around a campfire. Knowing what not to do is more important than not knowing what can happen. Therefore, I leave your comment but I certainly do not endorse the activities you mention!

  • I was up fishing at a lake one day, when I heard a BOOOM! It seems some very dumb campers had pulled out and left a can of beans in their still burning fire pit. The shrapnel extended over 150 feet or so, and had this not been at a developed campground, burning beans could have reached the trees.

  • I laugh every time! How cool that you had little kids' voices to enhance this. And I think you cover all the safety basics just fine.

  • Oh My God!

    I love it!

  • I haven't done this one or ever seen it till now. A few weeks ago I did however had a camp fire courtesy of vegtable oil in a pan that got a little too hot on the propane stove and started on fire. I did manage to turn of the propane and cover the pan with a lid but it still took a good 5 minutes to put the flame out but it was still scary. This video looks far safer then what I did.

  • Oh I'll be doing that one. Thanks for the tip. Nicely shown!

  • I try to teach it to everybody I camp with especially if they might be cooking. You would be amazed at how many people do not know you get a huge fire ball when you throw cold water on burning grease! (This "little stunt" really drives that point home.) This grease-water combination can happen in your kitchen at home too and when it hits the paint on the walls, yikes!

The real forest fire threat is an UNATTENDED or improperly extinguished camp fire.

  • I doubt anyone cares about living/camping in California with all of you angry, ultra-liberal nut cases. If perhaps you spent as much time enjoying life as you do pretending to be so quixotic, you might have had a positive remark for this gentleman. At the very least, he spends quality time with his family instead of tossing them in a daycare so he can meet with his therapist.

  • the only 'angry' person i see here seems to be you:what did a californian ever do to you? when i wrote i was appalled because it looks like a very dangerous stunt, When he explained:it made sense. my worry is that some kid might get the wrong ideas & try copying the stunt and get hurt. Yes we are hyper about fires here. if you lived in an area where one of the 'seasons' is Fire Season, you would be too. we,ve lost too many firefighters to fires that 'got away'.

  • Haha ya especially down here in SO-CAL were all these brush fires are

  • actually dude, were not like u think... i live in southern cali, and i to FUCKING HATE all those hippy liberalist bastards

  • @cometkatt Liberal homo from California no doubt? Ha ha ha ha you are hilarious. Stay inside the padded room along with your children, if you have any, God forbid.

  • @forrestry by what right do you THink you can make such idiot judgement calls about something you obviously dont know anything about? - i pity your children if this is the kind of NASTY kind of comments you make on a regular basis. how dare you think you know anyone here well enough to speak to ANYONE in such a fashion. Your mother would be ASHAMED of such bad manners. i know I AM ONE!!

  • @cometkatt Judgment calls? Pot calling the kettle black I believe the saying goes......................

  • @forrestry i don't do any RUDE name highly biggotted name calling

you cannot claim the same - this 'conversation' is done - i dont have the patience for such nastyness.

  • @cometkatt Not much fun being criticized yourself is it? You ought to keep your negative comments about other people to yourself. Usually I do, but I found you hard to resist. Alas sweetheart, I am afraid it will never work out. It is over between us........... :) Oh dear.

  • @forrestry \

go ahead and be delusional.... your family has my sympathies.

  • that wasn't very good ours go like 12-20 feet into the air =)

  • You're right, they can be much better. That was actually our second attempt as we lost some of the bacon grease on a bad first effort (didn't do a good job hitting the can with the water). Also it was real windy which doesn't help. But I do think my son did a good job of explaining how to do it, which was the whole idea behind the video. Thanks for the comment! Ken

  • AWESOME!!! Can't wait to try it!
