Love it, especially that initial quote about deep solitude and gentleness. There is a resistance in me to surrendering completely to this eventhough I feel it calling me home.
The Buddha is the Spiritual Father who Christ refers to anonymously because the Jews never would have followed him if he told them his Spiritual Father was the Buddha. The jealous "God" of the Jews is in fact proven by the New Testament to be the anti-Christ.

HOW Beautiful and it rings so true. Merton must have known he was moving on. THE PEACE that these spirits knew (know?) is something I long for. Thank you for sharing this.
Couldn't find the entire video on opensourcebuddhism - searched for Thomas Merton and mysticism and nothing came up. I would have like to see/hear the whole. This seemed to end rather abruptly. Thank you for posting this much though.
Although I think it is important to interpret human experience, Merton and your video remind us that it is also important to simply CELEBRATE our common human experience...thanx for the video.
@NorthernDancer1111 Yes Northern Dancer, Thomas Merton, too young to die, too beautiful to live. Well put! He is one of my all time favorite humans....
On January 15, 2010, I wrote: "What Brit Hume doesn't know about Buddhism and the Sorry State of US Christianity" INSPIRED and GUIDED by Merton, who said:
"I see no contradiction between Buddhism and Christianity. I intend to become as good a Buddhist as I can."
"What we are asked to do at present is not so much to speak of Christ as to let him live in us, so that people may find him by feeling how he lives in us."
if someone paid me a lot of money to maintain all these, i would. it is not mine to change. jeremy holiday produced it. as another poster noted above, dec. 10th is when he entered gethsemani monastery. this is a kind of "birthday" no?
"...but on December 10th, on his birthday, he would die." By now, you are aware of the inaccuracy of this statement. Thomas Merton was born January 31, 1915, died on December 10, 1968. Why have you not edited out this error?
I think that's awful and an injustice that that one priest was sentenced to 6 years in prison for resisting the Vietnam war! I have relartives who served in that war (drafted), they didn't die physically, thank goodness, but they "died" in other ways...you're never the same after you've faught in a war.
Father Louis was born January 31, 1915. Didn't know if the comment of him dying on his birthday was referring to the day he entered Gethsemani, which was December 10th. Check the first sentence of his autobiography for that correction.
Thanks Jeremy, I think Buddhism and Christianity have a lot in common in their mystical traditions. I think language and terminology cause barriers, however we find that experience is still the same between people.
Yes! But the essence of all religions is one and the same to bring mankind closer to the source of existence which is God, peace, love, gentility, and unity. "Religion should be a cause of love and unity; otherwise, we are better off without it." Baha'u'llah, the Prophet Founder of the Baha'i Faith, 1817-92.

Nice. But a small factual error...Thomas Merton was not born on December 10th, he was born on January 31st.

I disagree. He was at the time a moral exhibitionist, and frankly, he did more harm than good to the Church and to the Peace Movement.
