We love Chayote here in South Louisiana but we call them Mirlitons (Cajun French). Loved to do Pickles with them with Cayenne Peppers! Delicious. Would love to grow some.
John, I am afraid I am going to hurt the multiple plant starts when I seperate them from each other. Do you have any past videos showing how to seperate the plant starts from each other properly, without hurting the roots?
store bought non organic affordable potatoes are treated with so much crap - fungicides pesticides. organic potatoes are much more expensive. also nothing tastes as good as the blue potatoes. so creamy you dont have to use butter. they are so prolific & easy to grow they are worth it.
I love your videos. My question is : can you post videos on the preparation of the food you grow? Do you eat all the vegetable as salads? Do you cook them? You've inspired me with the raised bed and I built a bunch of them and they are doing great. If all of them produce as well as they are growing, I'll have way more than I can use in salads.
Hi John always love your videos but something has being bothering for awhile. While you always show the chayote seed you never show the prickly version of the chayote. Here in Vancouver, BC where i live everyone grow the prickly version including myself. I always mange to produce a lot of fruit with it but never with the non-prickly chayote you should check it out!
I do sometimes show the prickly variety. There is also a "white" variety. I had an episode at a community garden near the SF airport with the prickly variety. Most stores don't sell the prickly version.. so thats why it hasnt been in the videos :) And if they do, its usually not sprouting.
Hey John I love Emwalle you should all so check out Harmony Farms Supply in Graton it was just up the street a few miles from Imwalle. They all so grow there own starts and have been a great local organic nursery. Lots of Heirloom and very nice business.
I did do an episode at Harmony, check out my past videos. At Harmony it was more of a "pain" to film, as had to get owners permission/tour. Imwalle seems to be fine with me filming there without any permission, several employees saw me filming and were ok with it. I do get some unique plants at harmony, but im a frugal gardener, and aside from their "sale rack" they are a bit spendy.
I trust your information, you always make common sense with your gardening tips. You are also frugal and I love that about you. You'd make a great teacher in a third world country ;)
i need your help.. you go to all these wonderful nursery's that i cant find a single one in the los angeles or san bernardino area.. do you know of any ones out here .. like the one you are in this video
ps usually the ones i find do not sell veggies or anything like that just plants and fruit trees
In Southern California - Im sure there are some. Im not too familiar since I dont like there. I do know that many farmers markets in SoCal have plant sellers, that sell starts at good prices. Take a trip to the hollywood farmers market on sunday and stock up!
I love your videos, and have watched many. However, perhaps it would be worth it to invest in a better video camera. Your current one doesn't seem adequate for what you're asking of it. Thanks for your work!

Potatoes are inexpensive, but they are one of the most sprayed crops that there are.

John, how many of your plants do you start at home vs buy as starts?
madeofyucca 10 months ago
I'm with you 100% on potatoes, and I actually love them. They just don't yield enough to make the space and money dedicated to them worth it.

That was really very useful tip. You get tips on growing from many other channels, but never such tips on selecting plant starts. Thanx a lot.

how do stop the bugs from eatting everythig?
SMprepnNancy 10 months ago
1) Plant Extra, so you can feed them too.
2) Manual Control - Pick off bugs when you can
3) Release beneficial Insects that eat bad bugs / Get farm animals that eat certain bugs.
4) Plant Companion Plants that Repel Bad Bugs
5) Spray non-toxic (organic approved) sprays to deter/knock down bugs if necessary
