Lovely video...very atmospheric! I visit Whitby regularly but missed this amazing sight, i bet a few people ducked when the cannons fired! It's such a shame now The Grand Turk has been sold and moved on. Still a beautiful town well worth a visit. Thanks for sharing. Paula x
It's a pleasure to share this and the Turk video with you and all of the people who missed it, or just want to watch again and remember the wonderful sight of them sailing into wonderful Whitby Harbour. Yes, Endeavour fired a canon when she'd passed through the swing bridge, we were just crossing the road there and a chap in front of us ducked so quickly and so low we thought he'd been shot! Looking forward to being there in June.
I was on the Endeavour Replica as voyage crewmember when she crossed from Vancouver to Hawaii, back in 1999. My husband and I visited Whitby to see where she began.
Thank you so much for this record of one of the happiest days of my life! I was aboard the Whitby's 40% Replica Endeavour to and we sailed in beside her! I was right beside that first cannon shot in the harbour. The crew of the replica gave us a wonderful trip, all thanks to them, but the star, and what a Star, was HM Bark Endeavour.
I'm so pleased you like it and you have such happy memories of the event, hope your hearing wasn't impaired. It was a great day and sight. Thankyou for writing.
Thank you very much for sharing this video! I saw this ship in whitby in automn 1997! I love whitby and hope a can come to this beautyful city somedays.....
Glad you like the videos, pity the Endeavour isn't coming back. I was in Whitby over the weekend, the Grand Turk was back after being away a few weeks.
No I am not a seafaring person, just a regular visitor to Whitby. I looked around on Youtube to see what there was of the Endeavour, and decided to put the return on from my old vhs tape. We went there specially for it.
My pleasure to comment. I love Whitby, if I could afford to buy a house there and was able to find a job, I'd live there for sure. I only live thirty miles from there as it is though. Only a stones throw from Marton; Cooks birth place.
And as for the Endeavour, I took my daughter to see when it was on the Tees.
I have a fascination with Cook and his journeys. Although, I am by no means an authority on thoe subject.
It was really great to see, and so many others going especially to see the return like us. It's very pleasing to be able to share the video to remind those who were there, and for those who didn't see, to be able to see how it was. Thankyou for taking the time to comment.

it says Bark, but i was under the impression that was known as a "cat", or Whitby coal carrier. She's a unique and beautiful ship to be sure

@stratobagster
Yes, Endeavour was a Whitby Cat, as to the Bark or Barque bit, can I refer you to Wikipedia for the explanation, thanks for watching.

woah ! is the video sped up? if not, the ship moves bloody fast ! is there an engine/s ?
slicksullivan 2 years ago
No, the film isn't speeded up, the ship does have two 405-hp, 6-cylinder Caterpillar diesel engines though.
