You're right, the Vikings were pretty damn huge physically and they really didn't care about dying on the battlefield. But as far as like hand-to-hand (sword fighting) the samurai would win though. Their katanas was (still are to this day) the sharpest blade ever...it can cut small trees down in one swipe lol. Plus the samurai were highly disciplined fighters who trained hours upon hours a day to get their form right. This is just my opinion though :P

Indicating that the kingdom of denmark looked almost like it does today

People did not have a national identity and did not perceive themselves as being part of a nation and therefore there was no nation. It is an old country that has been through a different stages, from transistional clan society, to feudal kingdom, and finally a nation.

I belive that Danebroge is just a modernized national romantic substitute for Saint George Cross, a symbol commonly found throughout europe through the middelages. The myths relating to the crusade in Estonia was written down 300 years after the events took place.

@Angwulf The oldest known evidence of a white Saint George Cross on a red backdrop in use as the kings standart in Denmark is a book of arms written in the middle of the 1300s. This however neither makes it a national or state flag, but simply a symbol of local feudal ruling power. And there was nothing unique about it, simmilar standarts in both the same colours and other colours were used by feudal authority in all parts of western europe.

Both realms started the transformation from feudal realms towards countries with definite borders, national identities and national states in the sixteenth century. And thats when Dannebrog evolved from being a feudal symbol of local authority to a national banner/standart (someone recently told me that the term flag is from the 1700s).

You're right, the Vikings were pretty damn huge physically and they really didn't care about dying on the battlefield. But as far as like hand-to-hand (sword fighting) the samurai would win though. Their katanas was (still are to this day) the sharpest blade ever...it can cut small trees down in one swipe lol. Plus the samurai were highly disciplined fighters who trained hours upon hours a day to get their form right. This is just my opinion though :P

Among other things they worked as mercenary bodyguards to the emperor in Constantinopel (wich they called Miklagård, wich means Very big farm). @Lubben These people aren't bad. They did what they need to survive. Without them there would have been a missing ingredient in getting Europe out of the Dark ages. Military's grew stronger. People became united a trade route from England to Iraq was opened. The Vikings did a lot of good regardless of people's inability to see it.

After they had integrated into French social structures and formed the Norman identity by mixing French and Scandinavian culture they expanded to England and Italy and came to play a critical role in the shaping of medieval Europe.

The original tribes were: celts, germans, balts, slavs. witch moved into europe and as I found out it seems as svandinavians are actually descended from balts or slavs or both not really sure, but finno-ugric have partial mongolian roots, it gets all to damn detailed and messed up from there on, but I have to thank you for this discussion, lol, it makes me check stuff out.
p.s. belorussian also look almost more baltic that slavic, but its probably more of a 50/50.

@Trinivalts Nope you're wrong, Scandinavians are of a germanic people. In fact, the Y chromosomes of Norwegian, danish and Swedish people is the same as the majority in central europe, particulary Germany. Therefore closely related and the same type of people as germans.

@Trinivalts I haven't heard anything about that the vikings got beaten by latvians. Actually I haven't read about it anywhere. It just doesn't stand in the history books.
And neither have there been documentaries about the old latvians being a people forged of war. But I'm sure they gave the vikings some resistance, but in the end they ended up being threated as cattle, being sold as slaves all over europe. So in the end, the latvians lost.

@Gellingsen well in the END vikings got beaten by crusaders anyway. Your mixing there up a bit, back then there where no latvians in general but multiple tribes and the curonian (kurši) tribe, who where at the coast of baltics. It's not like they went to beat up vikings, they fought back and as I recently found out they where kind of vikings them selves, raiding danes together with other northern vikings, lol. So I guess they fought, then sometime later joined to raid some southern shores.

@Gellingsen Well according to some weird statistics here on YT I've come upon & I'm not sure if they're true, there are like 80% vikings in all baltics, only 15% balts, so that pretty much would make me a viking descendant aswell (Im from the west part - shore, more or less), thou the same statistics say that slavs ar only 5% witch is complete bull, slavs ar like <40% in latvia, some less in estonia, some more lithuania. Really mixed, you can see that in peoples last names, all asimetric'n'shit.

@Gellingsen The viking descendency is actually very likely, by the simple fact of very alike phenotype. My father had job in sweden and locals don't tell any difference, they come up in shops and speak swedish to him. :D and he tells that the looks are very alike thou finns look more different.

Baltic people were baltic people originally :D i mean there where the 4 main tribes witch came from where persia was, I mean they came earlier of course before persia, but you can see that persians (not arabs) look very european as well.
