  • RIP Clyde McPhatter, BEST voice in all of rock n roll!

  • Listen too the brazilian samba version: "Noriel Vilela - 16 Toneladas"

  • Posiblemente el intérprete haya sido Herb Reed, genial bajo.

  • fking retards that disliked

  • I heard Tenn. Ernie Ford on the radio during his hay-day - his version was great - BUT the Platters beat it, hands down [they beat Johnnie Cash, too!].

  • amazing. truly amazing.

  • holy cow this version is crap!!!!

  • Where is the version where it goes do,do,do,do,do,do?

  • @mrlemmon Tennessee Ernie Ford. That's my favorite version, and I think the original. This one is very good too though.

  • @PristineSneakers This is the one...

  • @mrlemmon Nevermind, Ford isn't the original. It is the one you're looking for though.

  • @PristineSneakers I'll find it one of these days. Thanks for trying though.do do do do do

  • Very powerful... excellent vocals.

  • Perfect bariton voice!

  • bellissima

  • От такого голоса - мурашки...

  • this is cool song. love it

  • It sends shivers down my spine....Amazing voice...

  • crazy that this was written by a white man and yet it sounds just like a black song when they sing it. goes to show that race is NOT important. only shared experience. A poor mans' made out of muscle and blood...

  • Sung nicely a bit too uptown cool pop for this song. They don't get the meaning across like Tennesee Ernie Foord. I doubt the Platters from LA never got within a hundred miles of a coal mine.

  • @dino335 think again, they ALL worked shit jobs and had hard lives before singing took off. Don't be fooled by the polish. Burl Ives had a golden throat too, but he worked on sounding good, even singing all his old time country and folk.

  • @dino335 - it's a cover song - they didn't write the lyrics so it doesn't matter if the lyrics represent their life experience or not. anyway, this version is way more soulful & hypnotic than the original by Ernie Ford. and these cats were def not chillin "uptown".

  • @MosesHightower Of course it's a cover song, written by Merle Travis in the 1940's.I am not required to like this version better. The Platters were known for their smooth style and delivery. The singer sounds affected to me, his pronuciation is a bit fey. Uptown cool refers to the sound and is a reference to Harlem. It was not a comment on their upbringing.

Not all black people grew up poor. I have no idea whether or not the singer grow up poor, do you?

  • @dino335 never said this version was better as that is subjective, but it is more soulful & hypnotic which are qualities i like better personally. i do like the Ernie Ford version as well though. i'm not that familiar with their upbringing but it's not a factor that influences how i feel about someone's music other than feeling for them if they did have to go thru a lot of hardship.

  • HOLY VOICES

  • Wonderful rendition! Sung by us kids on the bush mine where I grew up in Tanzania. Our "theme", the words true in Geita. Some Muzungu men gave half their pay-packets to the club barman, the other half to the Indian shopkeeper, saying "tell me when it's finished." Real meaning to the words "I owe, I owe, it's off to work I go!" My book's about that place, those crazy years. I'm going back first time in 44 years. I'll sing 16 Tons again, at the overgrown mineshaft mouth. And remember...

  • @speakswahilidammit It's "I owe my soul to the company store", but yeah, you are right.

  • That's what I call a deep bass :oO

  • The BEST version ever!!!

  • Спасибо!!!!

  • The lead singer on this song Is original Platters bass singer HERB REED

  • THE BASS. THIS GUY IS WHAT I STRIVE TO BE.

  • wonderfull bass vocal^^

  • I love Herb's voice! He is amazing...

  • capolavoro!

  • WOW!!! I like this version. I have a later recording of The Platters singing this, but it definitely doesn't compare to THIS one! Thanks for sharing!

  • Nobody ever perfermormed this song like The Platters in this recorded version. Thanks to whom putted it in You Tube!

  • This incredible singer is a Sub-Bass, Vileila,Tennesse and the other singer of the platters are deep-bass, and Alberto Vasquez is a singer-bass.

Ther are 3 kinds of bass voices and sub-bass is the deeper one, glad to find this great video.
