It's a digital fun alternative to a real instrument so that you can whip out your device somewhere and play. It's obviously not a replacement for a real ocarina, but it costs $1.00 and has a lot of configurations so it plays in many keys. Your rant is unwarranted.

and it may cost a dollar but the ipod itself cost around 300

it would be altogether cheaper to get the real thing.

it will just never sound the same or have the same feel to it.

I play the piano. So is an electronic keyboard a downgrade? No. It creates a different sound (a theoretically infinite number of different sounds, actually) than a piano. It would be foolish to call a keyboard "new age crap" instead of the wonder and innovation that it has been for the entire musical world.

This is not a downgrade. It's called Ocarina because you hold it sort of like one and it has familiar fingerings. The similarities stop there. It's not an attempt to recreate the instrument.

Something you might want to put in the information to this vid is that event though it is now compatible with the ipod Touch it ONLY works on the 2nd Gen iTouches. I downloaded the app with much glee and excitement and then when I tried to upload it to my itouch, it said it was incompatible with the 1st Gen. I was hoping to use my ear phones but that didn't work. I was shot down. Keep playing though your songs are great!

Cool addition to this app since I may be getting an iPod Touch in the future... but uhm, as many people said, real ocarinas are nicer to watch. This thing is cool, yes, nicely thought and is a must have for iPhone owners... I have nothing against it, but it just doesn't stand compared to your wide collection of ocarinas that sound beautiful! :(

It's nice and all, I like SMULEs ocarina app, however I don't see it becoming as popular as a handmade ocarina. The electric sound is nice, but feels lacking in true emotion.

I'll give SMULE a thumbs up for making this app available to so many, and raising ocarina awareness, but there is no way it will replace a handmade instrument.
