I am a graduate of Computer Engineering which is a good course but is currently over shadowed by Information Technology degree. Information Technology is more in demand in my place than a computer engineer, which ranks LAST to the demands for Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, ECE, and Civil Engineering.
@TheFranky905 its up to you... in my exp. if you really want Comp. Eng. the thing that you most likely to encounter is MATH, in general you have to love it... second is learn "low level programming languages" high level languages are mostly mastered in IT and CS ...learn to read HEXADECIMAL... yep we communicate closer to the machine language the 1's and 0's. youll need them soon in robotics, PIC programming, and may be on your school using an old school HEATHKIT if your school still uses one...
@TheFranky905 and the heathkit i am reffering to is the Microcomputer learning system...memory mapping...and other stuff i forgot about logic circuits...and lastly aside all those headache comp eng has a larger ratio of girls compared with the other eng. courses, about 1/4 so you get to enjoy the view much more in the classroom.
@hosdih yes.... alot, in my experience you'll need them more in handling sensors and thermal operations of certain electronic components...also in studying voltage and current and circuits resistance, capacitance, inductance...later you'll realized that physics is just giving you basic understanding in engineering it becomes applied and becomes more complicated...
hi ISU engineering, your video is really precise in explaining things about computer engineering. I took some clips of your video for my video presentation explaining what is computer engineering, it is not an advertisement for a school but just an explanation of basics in computer engineering. I hope I am not violating any :)
@AlphaKennyBody2 Our engineering programs are very hands-on. You will graduate with experience comparable to that of engineers currently working in the field. This is not a 'books-only' program. In addition, our Career Services office is second to none. 68% of our Spring '11 graduates had been placed "in-profession" before the end of the semester, meaning they are already working engineers, grad students, in the military, etc.
@MrShadeviperx Each case, each student, is different. Here are a few ISU specific statistics:
• At Spring 2011 graduation, 68% of graduates are In-Profession (employed, enrolled in grad school, etc.)
• Employment of ISU graduates is up 13% over one year ago
• ISU's College of Engineering has one of the best Career Services offices out there to help our current students and graduates for their entire professional career!
@MrShadeviperx : Bachelor's degree grads of our program have average starting salaries of more than $58,000 per year, master's degree grads get average starting salaries near $80,000, and PhD grads get average starting salaries near $100,000 per year.
@ReconMasterGamer Problem-solving skills and math and science skills are important. If your high school has programming or electronics courses, we recommend taking advantage of those courses, too. Iowa State University's College of Engineering recommends 4 years of science classes (including biology, chemistry, physics, and a lab experience) and 4 years of math classes (such as trigonometry, precalculus, analysis, calculus, or advanced math)
@Khan1103 Average monthly starting salary for our graduates over the past few years is near $4,830 for BS degree grads, $6,670 for MS degree grads, and $8,330 for PhD grads.
@blazerman159 Bachelor's degree grads of our program have average starting salaries of more than $58,000 per year, master's degree grads get average starting salaries near $80,000, and PhD grads get average starting salaries near $100,000 per year.
i am 17 and i can code a private server in c++/winsock. learnt c# at 14 and moved to c++ a year ago. i want to do a job in electronics but dono the different types of jobs in this area.also cant choose whether to go for game programmer or computer engineering.
@YoungMoney835 Good for you for learning C++, not many 15 year olds do that (well i sort of did, but whatever). As for building a computer, that is basic knowledge.
@SecularTechnology Yes, at ISU computer engineering undergrads take C and java, and if they enjoy it, they can choose to learn other programming languages
@YoungMoney835 Yes, at ISU you would learn java as a computer engineering major. You can see more info on classes CE majors take at ece.iastate.edu/academics/courses.html (see the core classes, 4-year degree plan, and course description links).
@kenkenka In brief, CE combines electrical engineering and computer science, and computer engineers design and integrate hardware with software and embedded systems in electronic devices. CS is the study of theoretical foundations of information and computation, and computer scientists develop solutions to computing problems and work with programming languages, operating systems, algorithms, and computer theory. Both have great career prospects. More info at computingcareers.acm.org
Yeah he was being a smart ass, but there's merit in what he's saying.
I'm doing AP math and coming first in software design at my school and well.. i'm worried about this course (my cousins told me the math you have to do along with the electrical engineering units is very hard and they're smarter then me). If you set your mind to it and it's your goal i can't see why you can't do it though.
@yoguesswhozM3 not really... but you need to love knowledge. As the field changes every 3 months. Its very fast paced you need to keep up and read every now and then. I'm a computer engineer.

MCA is equivalent to ME (Computer Science and Engineering)
MCA with B.Sc. (Computer Science) background is equivalent to ME (Computer Science and Engineering).
B.Sc. Computer Science (3 Yrs) + MCA (3 Yrs) = 6 Years.
BE Computer Science (4 Yrs) + ME (2Yrs) = 6 Years.
MCA and ME both are equal.
Companies giving equal priority to both MCA and ME.
Master of Computer Applications MCA and Master of Engineering ME, are treated Same for jobs and there is no difference in the competence ratings.
