Good thing it was a kill shot, as I shot 1 like that in a hole & I didn't make a kill shot & I couldn't get the sob out... I left my gun like an idiot to get another tank & go back w/ enough air to retrieve my gun (& hopefully the fish) & when I got back to the hole the fish was gone & so was my gun...

Ha that fish is so owned...ive noticed spearing seems to give an instant kill factor compared to fighting on a boat rod for 2 hours...where i live my friend used to do scuba,and there is world war two wreckage etc,and there is this sunken tank and my friend shone his torch down the gun barrel to look and a fucking great eel launched out at him! ;if he had a spear gun he could of owned it if he knew it was there...can you do this off a sit on top kayak?

problem with this is a high percentage of released groupers are not vented properly, and die anyways.. even a lot of grouper that do get vented properly end up dying.. grouper tastes good ;)

he's referring to the swim bladder being punctured before being released. you probably already know this but when you bring fish up from deeper water the difference in pressure forces their swim bladders out their mouths. this has to be punctured and the proper way to do it is to use a special hypodermic needle to release the gas inside

i would say that a majority of the fish (if not all) do survive if the special government-approved needles are used to vent the bladder. most of them on the market meet the requirements of amendment 27/14 in the Gulf of Mexico, so i am sure they save the fish. it also depends on how the fish is handled by the fisherman. obviously this matters whether or not the fish has an inflated bladder.
