AMAZING video! this is excellent! I lvoe seeing this stuff instead of jsut boring old drag races and straight line street races. get some cornering in there!
I have a '77 T/A hardtop with light suspension mods and 18" wheels. I will put that car up against anything modern on a road course anyday. I almost ran over a new Z06 a few weeks ago in a sharp left banked turn on a 2 lane highway. He was in the gas but couldn't handle the corner, I was in the gas all the way through and almost rearended him. 2nd gen T/As are badass in stock trim.
and i should say that mine does have stock suspension. I do not get where you are getting the idea that this car is not stock? I am not saying it is i just don't see anything here the stock car couldn't do.
I don't think the 78 firebirds came with racing suspensions for circuit. Back then American muscle were built to go straight really. They were high and not lowered like the cars here in the video.
the z28 for example came from factory with 4 wheel disk breaks, quick ratio power steering, windage trays in the oil pan, specil pullys that wouldn't through the belts in high g turns. All from factory, for the street cars.
The trans-am was set up vary similarly. Except of course it had a larger displacment motor. Which was lighter than the actual pontiac fire bird that was used in trans am racing(the t/a was not eligable as it had a 400/455 ci displacment which is illegal in trans am racing)
hi cookiemonster..actualy the 1969 and 70 pontiac trans am were used in the transa am racing series..the 69 using the GM 305 cu. in. engine and the 70 using a sleeved down 350 cu. in. engine...
Technically, the cars you mention were Firebirds, not Trans Ams, though some of the second gen "Tirebirds" sported liveries reminiscent of what was on the '70 Trans Ams.
They used both, but mostly chevy's. The sleeved-down 350 mentioned above was never really well-developed so Firebird teams ran the Chevy 305. They were able to do this because Firebirds were available with that engine in Canada.
and when i said i have a fire bird i ment Trans-Am i was looking at your comment was thinking trans-am but saw firebird, and thats what i typed. opse.
Great video! I love the old F-bodies. Over the past 20+ years I've owned the 67 Firebird, 68 Camaro, 71 Trans Am, 79 Camaro (which was demon possessed and tried to kill me on several occasions...lol), an 80 Formula (which I still have), and the 87 Formula 350. I always enjoy seeing good Detroit steel being put through its paces. Thanks for posting!
i love seeing my shacker move like that when i drive it love getting it out on interstate and driving the hell outta've it passing everyone like crazy
much respect to you man for driving that awesome bird of your's. Most peeps who own a classic like that, would be restoring it rather than racing it. I love it how when you shift gears and you see that "SHAKER" hood shake. Performance and function of a "REAL" car for real drivers! The only question i have is, were you riding on stock wheels and tires? because those ol' 14s doesn't help getting in corners well. Later
Not bad dude, if that is not a street driven car, try some front-end geometry changes (camber etc) and put limit straps on the rear axle, if of course you haven't done so already.
Most regulations state that you mustnt modify the suspension apart from stiffness and ride height, often not even allowing that. So id expect hes not allowed to.
mikerizzo42, you forgot Britain too! Lotus, Aston Martin and Jaguar are a match for any others out there! And dont forget, everything on a Shelby Cobra is british apart from the engine.
Streetracingays, Please dont bring your rice crap into this. Sure they are good cars for school girls and such. Real perfomance cars and built in USA or Italy.
man, that musta been depressing at the end! lol

I love how people say muscle cars can't handle, that car did pretyt damn good.

Obviously it doesn't have the stock suspension.

um... my 78 t/a handles pretty dang good, and I have taken it around mid ohio. You would be suprised how well those old cars can indeed handel.

well I own a 78 fire bird, and I can attest for its ability to turn. This car is most definiatly low, only a couple inches off the ground.
Cars like the Z28, Trans-am, Challenger t/a, and boss 302 where all built to handle.

Now there are a lot more muscle cars set up to for drag racing than there are that came set up for trans-am racing. I will admit that.
But the ones that whhere sold to the public built to handle do exist.

Those 78 firebird I think was the year GM started to pay attention to handling instead of just freeway cruising.
I love muscle cars but I hate when vehicles can't handle for shit.

GM had handling down in some cars like the Camaro, which was designed for Trans Am Racing out of the gate.
