One of my favorite solos by a great player. When I was a student at Berklee, Mr. Mariano was on the faculty. It was a real privilege to hear him play at a faculty recital.
I think I must have been one of the last artists to have worked with Charlie, it was on my debut album and all I can say is that I was blown away by him as a person. I love him. Lets even go into "that" talent, "that" voice, "that" timing and THOSE accents. I'm so used to being around "little men" whom all they want to do is "emerge" or be the focal point of attention. I told Charlie the truth, and that is that I knew I was lucky enough to have worked with the BEST at the begining of my career.
If I could play just one song on alto, this would be it, note for note. Charlie wasn't one to look back on the past, but I'd have to tell him this cut is my favorite Mariano track of all time. So much emotion, yet so inventive and structured, with his "conversational" style he delivered a complete story all in itself, a masterpiece. Without question, he's one of the five greatest alto's in jazz history. And my personal favorite. There won't be another.
I can't explain the thrill that Charlie Mariano's sound brings to me. Like John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Charles Mingus, he is an absolute reference point.
Sounds incredibly much like Phil Woods.
Great alto player - with a Runyon mouthpiece, it seems

For me he has the most perfect sound ever on the alto saxophone.

besides his own legacy, he has the closest sound to Sir. Johnny Hodges that i've ever heard.

Go, Mariano, go! What do I write in the sax part to make 'em sound like you?
