In order to mate, they have to maintain some kind of grip on the female. They grab a pectoral fin and have to somehow turn the female almost all the way upside down. It's not a pleasant process, and the female does leave with scars, but the male isn't trying to kill her. If you watch how the sharks move, he's actually pushing her through the water so she can breathe.
