I'd tend to say this song is about prescribed roles in society, how you're ostracised for not fitting in and expected to 'grow up and be a man' even when it isn't you. So you try to fit their standards and you might be able to manage it for a while, but ultimately it's a tiring act and a thin veneer. All the things they didn't like about you are still there and show through, but because you've hidden them under a false visage, who you really are is shameful to you and thus unaccepted by them.
Holy shite, I haven't heard these songs from this cd since right after college. Now I remember what a fantastic cd this was. Reminds me of my ex-girlfriend's roommate who I started banging after the girlfriend moved away. Getting hard now just thinking about her. The roommate, not the bitch ex.
i think what morrissey is trying to say in this song is that we all use cliches so commonly in our daily lives,it would be so easy just to ring for one and that most of them are meaningless drivel!!!!!!
@LottaRadiohead The clichés are in the chorus - "grow up be a man", "close your mealy mouth". He's singing about how people would hassle him to be more assertive and manly when he was young.

@3alextomlin "Easily the weakest track on Viva Hate, this rather unattractive song has little going for it. Uninteresting lyrics are coupled with a slapdash tune by Street to produce a distinctly underwhelming effect.
To this day, Morrissey's poorer songs tend to combine poor lyrics with a poor tune. Whether this is an indication of exactly how much difference Mozzer's vocals make to a song is hard to say." (from "It May All End Tomorrow" Webzine.) I guess you're right.
i want to cry while listening to this because of 2 things: truly lyric and generally beautiful song
