I think there may be one of these birds living near my house. I hear this screeching sound every night. I wish I could spot the bird but every time I run out to see it, its nowhere to be found..
i am lucky enough to live somewhere, where you can see a fair few of them (live in wiltshire uk) i saw 3 whilst night riding on saturday.absolutely silent flyers.just feel really lucky everytime i see one :-)
belive it or not barn owls are actually indangered because thier habitat is being destroyed and posion it being put down to kill rodents (they barn owls prey) im making a Save The Barn Owl vid now it should be uploded today!!!! ;-)
There is plenty of barn owls where i live, I always hear them at night, Once i was over the golf course just round the corner from me and found a owls head. I think a fox must of got it.
I am planning to keep a male and a female Barn Owl in my house. I will probably train them for catching rats in my house. I will put a white mouse in a certain distance from the owls, and they will practice of catching them.
Ok. I will clear this argument here. I am a wild bird catcher and I have a Barn Owl. Now I live on a farm where there is lots of rodents. The reason why we people have them as pets is to get rid of pests on our properties. That is why people have owls.
Oooh, nice! He did a cool sudden rise when he was flying, and then an abrupt drop to the ground without really folding his wings. And the way he turned his head all the way around was something too.
There was an owl on the roof of my family's house a while back. I don't think he was a barn owl; probably a great horned or something similar, not sure, but he was [erched on an antenna and hooting for a while. Then he flew off really quickly and quietly. It was neat.
Awsome its Coryn! Or Soren....or Eglantine or Ginger or Nyra or (etc any tyto-alba in GoG'H series[lol]) Wish i had one so badly. R u sure theyre legal EVERYWHERE in the USA? And how much would an egg cost?
Lol i sound like im actually going to buy one.... but unfortunatly not =( (still would like questions answered though)
Nice Video of an amazing bird. In Italy, it is quite difficult to observe it in the wild. We are transforming our rural landscape and destroyng barns and old country houses, so the barn owl is not a common bird. I hope to visit England country landscape very soon.
Great footage, and that's a handsome owl (I think that's a male). I love when he looks over his shoulder as if to say, "Who are you? What are you doing?"
in canada taking care of wild animals is agansit the law. in bc, we have this place that orphans birds of prey that have been hit by cars or that kind of stuff. they brought to our school a barn owl that suffurs from brain damage. it thinks people are owls. for example, the people there would preen the owls head like what a mate does, and the owl whold preen the persons head in return. it was so cute, but it is sad to think that that bird sufferd from that degree of brain damage.
I wish I'd seen one so clearly, but the only time I saw a wild Barn owl was in the dark over a field, at roughly 10pm in March this year. Took my breath away, even though it was just a shadowy shape in the gloom
Why on Earth would you want a wild Owl for a pet?. Captive birds are never the same as wild birds and take a lot of looking after, they are not a toy or status symbol and need a lot of attention.
To watch a wild Barn Owl hunting at dawn or dusk is a very magical and uplifting sight to see, there really is no need to keep one as a pet as they are wild birds and belong in the wild.
@ChainsOfAwesome To the best of my knowledge, in the U.S. you have to be a certified wildlife rehabber or falconer to be allowed to keep an owl in captivity. It's illegal for the average joe to keep one as a pet.
It is illegal in america to keep one in captivity, along with crows, ravens, and other such native birds. If you want to interact with owls, I would suggest working at an animal shelter, or set up nesting box for them in your yard.
true, but its also illegal to own alligators, tigers, cougars, vultures...the list goes on and on, but the reality is, people own everything lol regardless of what a state law says
I'm with Ashley, but also wanted to add my thoughts...
Wild animals should never be kept as pets. Just because they are in a cage does not make them tame. Read "Wesley the Owl" by Stacey O'Brien if you are interested in learning about barn owls.
They are very intelligent creatures, and should never be underestimated.
I don't think many people realize the care it takes to understand and care for a species of animal- both wild and tame included.
@guthixshowdown I love barn owls, but having one as a pet is not smart. Unless you are rehabilitating them (such as they were orphaned or hurt) I wouldn't keep one and once it was better or old enough I would release it back into the wild.
@guthixshowdown i actually own a barn owl, very sweet and hyper. she loves attension. i leave the windows open so shes free to go out for fresh air but she perfers to stay in. she leaves at night to hunt.( i let mice out to make it easier on her). but dont listen to ashleystow. if you want one go bye one they are expensive and hard to take care of at times but very great pets.
@guthixshowdown Well yes they are legal to keep as pets in America IF you have a falconry license, or a some sort of caretaker license, and you request a permit from the goverment to allow you to keep them in captivity. If they give you permission than feel free to get the owl as a pet. OH and each owl requires a new permit to keep, so it isn't universal to all owls.
Great Footage! I've been watching young barn owls near my home this evening. They are amazing birds. The grassland outside your fence looks ideal for barn owls, they like rough unmown/ungrazed tussocky grassland as this type of habitat can support large populations of voles and other prey animals. If you're in control of this land I'd encourage you to leave it as is for the benefit of the owls.
Yes you're quite right about the habitat and we are lucky enough to have Little & Tawny Owls regularly in and around the garden, we do have a good supply of mice and voles here which obviously encourages them. I'm hoping to put up a Barn Owl nestbox soon.
Wow, I'm in love with all owls, I'd love to live near you so I could see these amazing creatures! We never see them in England! Unless we're in a zoo or sanctuary or soemthing
@rachelfrench1992 June is the best month to try to see them in England in daylight - short nights and a lot of youngsters in the nest (in a good vole year) to feed.
What a great video. I live in the country and would love to see an owl but never have! We see Buzzards, Kestrels and Sparrow Hawks but never an Owl! Well done for posting a real pleasure to watch.
An awesome vid. I've only seen a Tawny Owl in the wild close up, a baby one that fell out of its nest. I've always hoped and hoped to see a wild Barn Owl, they're my favourite birds. I'm no expert, but I think this one you filmed is a female, owing to the dark colouring on the back
cheers mcpokes, I've had a few missed opportunities so I always keep a camera at the ready. This Owl had been flying through regularly and I managed to be there waiting for it, didn't expect in my wildest dreams for it to fly over next to me though!.
That is wonderful and I am glad you caught it on camera for us - so close up is quite a feat, they are usually quite shy. It is a really magnificent bird and my fiancee was lucky to see one fly directly in front of her at dusk; again they tend not to come too close to humans but this one seemed to be more daring than most.

Cool in flight! I want to see a Barn Owl, but in Sweden the Barn owl only is an unexpected guest, that's a tragedy =( . Where in england do you live ashleystow ? ..
I live in the Chiltern Valley which is in the south of England.Norfolk,East Anglia,England is one of the best areas to see them. They are resident here in the UK but due to changes to their favoured habitat and lack of nest sites they have become scarce.
I think he was more intent on finding food and wasn't too worried about me, this was filmed during a poor year for Voles which is their main food source and it was often seen flying close-by looking for food. They really suffered a population decline in the UK between 1800-1995 but seem to be slowly increasing especially with the help of nestboxes.
