  • Good form

  • There are a large number of people who would have learned kata from Tamano Sensei who is still very active in Shorei-kan today. Those that learned from Master Toguchi would be even more fortunate since he passed away sometime around 1999.

  • almost perfect performance.

  • Thanks. I appreciate that!

  • In my humble opinion I thought Glimmermans kata was performed quite well indeed. I am a former active student of the Honbu Dojo of peekskill in NY and gekisai dai ichi was in fact the first kata taught there. As of this post when class resumes after the holidays I hope to resume along with it. Thanks for sharing it...

  • Thank you very much.

  • That "is" Shoreikan's kata Dai Ichi, the very first kata taught in that house Goju Ryu. When performed by Shoreikan people the blocks are usually quicker, more circular, and softer... and there are also kiais on the chest punches just after the head blocks. As performed in this video it doesn't look Goju Ryu at all...

  • Entitled to your opinion, of course. Interesting...you have no videos up. Thanks for stopping by, anyway. Looking forward to seeing what you might post in the future.

  • That was one of the shortest Katas I have ever seen in my entire life!....Pretty smooth though.

  • Hello,

It is one of two Kata - one from Shorinryu and one from Gojuryu- that are standardized for all Okinawan Karate Schools.

  • Hello - I like your kata. Did you learn that from someone who took from Seikichi Toguchi? I didn't recognize it as any of the katas from Toguchi's books or the traditional Goju katas, but it looks solid and strong.

  • You know most of the American pioneers of Okinawa Goju-Ryu spent some time with Toguchi Sensei, first, including Anthony Mirakian. John Roseberry, Glen Grabow, Kimo Wall, etc...

My mother-in-law trained with Toguchi (the only woman there in Koza City Dojo) until 1974and she knows it still. Also, the head of an ecelectic spin-off of Shoreikan, Goju-Kai, and a mix of things he has assimilated helped me remember this simple but effective little kata, as well. Thanks, by the way!

  • Have you ever heard of Jay Trombley in Texas? He trained with Toguchi back in the 50's.

Did your mother-in-law learn Kihon Ichi from Toguchi?

  • I am very curios where you obtained this kata. What dojo, where, and who was the head instructor. One side note, why are you wearing the knee brace on the outside of your Gi? Thanks

  • Do excuse me, but with your approach, I do not feel in anyway compelled to answer your third degree. I don't know you, nor do I owe you answers. Kindly write to me and establish who you are before you grill me. I have a good idea who sent you. Please tell me you are not basing your case on what kind of underwear I am wearing...

  • I agree, I was in quite a foul mood yesterday and my posts reflected it. I appologize for my approach. I too practice Goju, in fact our style is Shoreikan which I am guessing you are familiar with that? I was not trying to discredit your kata. I just wondered if you learned this kata directly from Toguchi Sensei? If you do not feel like answering that is fine..

  • GoGo Ryu version. More muchimi. No open hands. Slow it down.

  • Thank you--I agree that this is not nearly what I wanted to display--I am working on fixing things that have slipped. There are mistakes and adjustments that are glaring to me! I haven't seen my self on video since before I tore my ACL. Your comment is valuable and helpful in navigating back to proper timing, tempo, etc...I appreciate your attention and comments!

  • In order to respect the essence of the art, try to fix your position before execute the technic.

Just have a look to the sensei toguchi to understand it.

    Arigato gozae mashita

  • Dou Itashi Mashite, Nubulari-san. Domo Arigato--I appreciate your comment. I noticed you are a video viewer, but you have no videos up yet. I would love to see your Kara-Te Waza and Kata...Especially if you were a student of Toguchi Sensei. Ah so, desuka?

  • Looking good! That's obviously similar to Geki-sai, my only question is why?:)

  • Thank you very much! That means a lot coming from you! I am still working with my knee and balance issues, and trying to get in shape, so I am glad that it looked pretty good. As to the "whys" of Toguchi Sensei...I have a lot to say about that. I will drop you a priv. message.

  • Looking forward to it:)
