I can't believe people get so close to a live race track with nothing between them. Still, not pretty. You'd think you would be safe on the inside of a turn, too, but he was still too close. Drivers are not looking for peds.
it just goes to show how unorganized these road rallys can get, there has to be some standard set of rules (why its so difficult to get more SCCA events here in South Texas).
These clips are not representative of rallying in general. The safety officer of an event should ensure that spectators are a safe distance from the road before a stage is started. When the stage is running or " live " then it is the job of the marshalls to control the spectators. There is a head marshall at each junction. If they feel that the spectators are endangering themselves and the competitors, then they have to radio the stage commander to have it stopped imeadiately. next reply
Most of the clips in this video are from some years ago, and safety restrictions get tighter every year. If a junction is deemed, in advance of the rally, to be too fast into a hidden junction or simply too fast then a chicane should be placed at the junction. Chicanes are usually made up of several straw bales but water bollards can also be used. The idea of a chicane is to slow down the competitors before said junction. next reply
A lot of the time the inside of a turn can be equally as dangerous as the outside, it all depends on the level of the junction, the approach and the road surface. It is not the concern of drivers to keep constantly worrying about spectators venturing out onto the road or standing in stupid places. next reply
The driver will be alert enough to stop or try not to injure anybody, but it is not their fault. Granted, sometimes drivers will drive beyond their limits, but all crashes are not as a result of pushing things too far. next reply
When crashes occur, there are safety measures to help, both the driver and navigator are wearing fire proof suits and helmets, the car is re-enforced with a roll cage (so it doesn't crumple like a normal road car) also each competing car carries two hand held fire extinguishers and a plumbed in one to automatically extinguish engine bay and cock pit fires. For the spectator's safety, at a junction, the areas where they are not allowed to stand are marked clearly with tape. next reply
