A lot of these people need help and support from govt agencies, drug addiction, mental illness, assistance with life skills and more importantly accommodation. What is wrong with Americans are they so self-focused they cant help each other out?

You can help the homeless. Not by just giving them 10 bucks, but by helping them get help from an organization. It doesn't have to be just giving them money and never seeing them again. They're real people. Not just 'hobos'. Find a local organization. Help them get there and ask for help. Let them know there is hope.

1-800-RUNAWAY is a great resource for at risk youth. Youth can just talk to someone, chat online, get a free bus pass back home or find services within their community that may help them, if returning home is not an option.

Teen homelessness in NYC is on the up. There's a trend where the parents send the kid to Manhattan to visit friends or go to a concert, and once their son/daughter is in the city, they call on the cell phone and say "don't come back."
It's a way for them to abandon the children. The economy has a lot to do with it.
I live in CA and often go into San Francisco where there are homeless on every corner. I have spoke to some and many of them are Vietnam war veterans.. I can only imagine the new generation of injured, (mentally and physically) Iraqi war veterans. This country doesn't take care of its veterans and doesn't take care of its people. These kids are cold on the streets while the rich and powerful sit comfortably in their homes like nothing is wrong. We are fighting for the people of Libya? yea right.

I agree there should be some acountability in decisions made by these teens - but they also need stability - and guidance - they need to feel like there will be an undeniable love - unconditional - strict but loving kind of home - some of these teens are capable of turning there life around with this kind of support - I know....I was one of those kids......
I think there also needs to be some personal accountability. I've done my research too and although a large part of homeless do have some mental abnormality, a helluva lot more willingly take drugs. And there are programs to help those mentally unstable in America, but you're not gonna get paid by a government agency so that you can spend that money on drugs.

Operative word is "streets" describing city life. If anyone comes up to my door. They will be fed a good hot country meal. I just hope the best for these young ones. They are the indicator and the direct result of the evil spirits that hover over metropolitans. Their names are greed, vanity, selfeshness, and wanton. My wife and I drove through Eureka, Ca. a few years ago on the way to Oregon. Last year we did not stay in Eureka. There were so many transients and homeless families everywhere. Living in the hotels. All I smelled was beer and cigarrettes. They were being run out of San Francisco. The next day I discovered ashes from cigarretes dumped on the hood of my $28,000.00 Chevy. We haven't been back. The town is a junkie yard.
There is many reasons why people live the lives they do. Bad parents-bad influence, bad background, friends. You cant blame people because they have a bad life, none wants that in the first place, but thats only what the circumstances brings them. Of course there is some people out there who wants to live on the street, but thats sick people with a mental disturbance.

I recently went to Pearl Sreet is Boulder, Colorado, that place is HOBO CENTRAL!!! I went to eat at the frenchfry place and got the "naked with friends" fries DANG THEY WERE GOOD!! But I wanted to feed the Hobos when I offered them food they got really pissed off, so I give up. Plus I saw a sign that a hobo had that said "i'm not gonna lie! Just gimme POT!!!" WOW!
I am meeting so many wonderful teenagers that are homeless, that have escaped foster homes & abusive family life. They are still being positive, trying to survive on the streets. We all need to look into being a part of their lives, helping them achieve.Stop while you're downtown, talk to them on the streets, buy them a meal, provide them food clothing, money whatever they need, we have to be there for them! And they will succeed.they will prosper! Give them opportunities. We are all Americans!

Most of the ones who are under 18 never say they left home because their parents abused them. In fact, I can think of one person who did that. Most kids leave because they're bored, because they're kicked out, or because they're running from an arrest.

I live in CA and often go into San Francisco where there are homeless on every corner. I have spoke to some and many of them are Vietnam war veterans.. I can only imagine the new generation of injured, (mentally and physically) Iraqi war veterans. This country doesn't take care of its veterans and doesn't take care of its people. These kids are cold on the streets while the rich and powerful sit comfortably in their homes like nothing is wrong. We are fighting for the people of Libya? yea right.

been there, done that, got a t shirt. perfect song for this. ive eaten and gotten clothes from dumpsters, spent nite under bushes & on playgrounds, bathed in churches or at seal beach showers outside while in bathing suit to get clean. lived in a car, without anything at all with a 3 year old daughter. all cuz i love and trusted someone with my money...and they left me to go get on meth. now we're ok but it took years. keep the faith.

I think there also needs to be some personal accountability. I've done my research too and although a large part of homeless do have some mental abnormality, a helluva lot more willingly take drugs. And there are programs to help those mentally unstable in America, but you're not gonna get paid by a government agency so that you can spend that money on drugs.

My wife and I drove through Eureka, Ca. a few years ago on the way to Oregon. Last year we did not stay in Eureka. There were so many transients and homeless families everywhere. Living in the hotels. All I smelled was beer and cigarrettes. They were being run out of San Francisco. The next day I discovered ashes from cigarretes dumped on the hood of my $28,000.00 Chevy. You cant blame people because they have a bad life, none wants that in the first place, but thats only what the circumstances brings them. I recently went to Pearl Sreet is Boulder, Colorado, that place is HOBO CENTRAL!!! I went to eat at the frenchfry place and got the "naked with friends" fries DANG THEY WERE GOOD!! But I wanted to feed the Hobos when I offered them food they got really pissed off, so I give up. Plus I saw a sign that a hobo had that said "i'm not gonna lie! Just gimme POT!!!" WOW!

I am meeting so many wonderful teenagers that are homeless, that have escaped foster homes & abusive family life. They are still being positive, trying to survive on the streets. We all need to look into being a part of their lives, helping them achieve.Stop while you're downtown, talk to them on the streets, buy them a meal, provide them food clothing, money whatever they need, we have to be there for them! And they will succeed.they will prosper! Give them opportunities. We are all Americans!

We need the needle exchange to be a national thing, not just a few states. I know a few people who squat here in Indiana, and there is no drug tolerance here whatsoever, they are just arrested and abused by authority if caught. I'm not homeless myself, though I am considering leaving my family to travel (I have a dysfunctional family, but not a fucked up one).
I hang out with a lot of street kids and meet a lot of transients.
Most of the ones who are under 18 never say they left home because their parents abused them. In fact, I can think of one person who did that. Most kids leave because they're bored, because they're kicked out, or because they're running from an arrest.
Also, most of them seem to love it.

Look there are a lot of us that didnt have a choice about what we became. We put all our energy into surviving and none remains for fitting into societies dreams for us. We do fine on our own I'm sure you mean well but really we're doing ok thanks.
