Great vid, but have a question though. Have you heard or found a way to do a build without using a vise? Reason I ask because I live in an HOA controlled condo so no access to a garage for a workbench and there's really nothing indoors to install a vise on without scratching or breaking things. Was thinking about a portable/folding workbench but not sure if it'll hold up when torqueing stuff down.
How was the finish on you gas block? I got the clamp on version of the vltor and the black phosphate coating just rubbed off on some spots, so now I have a black gas block with steel color showing through, it kinda looks like crap now lol
@ManFlaver personally I love the MUR but not the VIS. The VIS rails are very large and bulky, and extra heavy compared to a one piece rail. But they are great quality, so it depends on what you need.
@flatjawspud No, you can headspace an AR, but its not needed. If you want to, it should headspace between 1.4646" to 1.4706" but again, its only needed if your having problems
@pootinhammer there are three different setups for the gas system on the AR: carbine, midlength, and rifle. Carbine is the shortest at around 7in, midlength a little longer at about 9in, and rifle is the longest at ?in. Short barreled rifles will have a carbine gas system, most of your 16in barrels will have midlength (or carbine too), and your 18in barrels and longer will have a rifle length gas system. The longer the gas system, the softer shooting the AR is theoretically.
tape both sides of your pliers, tip i learned from a machinist friend. I'd also recommend putting some blue (NOT RED) loctite on all threaded screws, to keep them them from backing out. Great video, may i ask about how to check or if i need to worry about head-spacing when building an upper?
@TheMisfit621 it's a white oak armament barrel, I covered all the parts in the first vid if you want more info. the noveske barrels are slightly heavier profile I believe.
@R0GUEKN1GHT Oh OK, I didn't see the first video. I'm currently in the process of building a high end AR myself and I'm stuck between the Daniel Defense hammer-forged barrel and the Noveske Recon Barrel. Any advice?
@TheMisfit621 depends on the mission of the rifle. the noveske barrel is SS, with a heavier profile, and will be more accurate. the DD barrel is HF, lighter profile, and will withstand harder use. so get the DD if you want to run and gun and get a high round count, or get the noveske if you don't mind the extra weight and want to have a tack driver.
@R0GUEKN1GHT I could tolerate the heavier barrel but at the same time do I really want to? The rifle would be mainly used for run 'n gun but at the same time I have a incredible urge for that accuracy... (I shoot Highpower Rifle matches so its kind of drilled into me)
Also, is the DD M4 rail worth it? I was thinking either the DD 12.0 FSP or the RIS II M4. Know anything about those?
@TheMisfit621 the M4 rail is one of DD's older rails, but still excellent. I am currently running one of their lite rails on my most recent build though, and it's awesome. the FSP rail or the RIS will both do you good as well, I do not have personal experience with these, but have heard great things. you can't really lose any way you go with daniel defense.
it's a very nice receiver if that is what you want. I eventually sold it and bought a standard forged receiver and used the extra money on other parts. you also save about 1.5oz. in weight by going with a standard forged receiver. but if you have the money, and you want it for a precision rifle that you don't care about a little extra weight, it's the best receiver out there.
no, you don't need any form of licensing to build an upper receiver. you do have to buy a lower receiver from someone with a Federal Firearms license though, and you need the lower and upper to have a functional rifle.

How hard is it lining up the gas hole on the barrel with the gas block? I've always wondered this. lol

@JulioCHernandez not really difficult at all.

Don't forget to do a head space test !!

@taurus38splul not if you get the barrel extension already installed on your barrel from a reputable manufacturer.

u forgot the oring on the gas tube didnt u
turneynicholas 7 months ago
@turneynicholas there is no Oring for the gas tube. this is an AR, not airsoft.

did u have to put the bolt together or did you buy one that was already put together?

Would a 10 inch dd hand guard cover it up?
EDF6399 11 months ago
@EDF6399 yes, barely, there is a small amount showing with a 10in rail.
R0GUEKN1GHT 2 months ago
Neverrmind, I saw it, lol, thnks

Is your hand guard covering the lp gas block? I can't tell in the video. Thnks

i was wondering...could i use he standard A2 frontsight base/post with this free-float rail system?
0122358 11 months ago
@0122358 yes you could. the rail should be 9in for a middy, and 7in for a carbine gas.

what are the main effects of the gas block position on the barrel? can you pretty much just put it wherever you want?

Have you thought of putting an Adams Arms piston conversion on an AR? Seems like a cool set up. Great vid!
9977jpp 2 years ago
not really, never had a problem with DI. also pistons are heavier and have greater felt recoil.
