I luv Surya but was disappointed to see this program yet again..a program that was performed so well at '93 worlds (her best performance ever at which she deserved gold over oksana) & got her 4th at '94 olympics (would've been bronze if she landed 1 Lutz jump)..here all the choreography was thrown in the garbage..& her serious ankle injury didn't help. Luv the costume & backflip finishing w/back to judges as a "F**k you" which the judges did deserve! Regardless, she's the best entertainer ever!
Yes, She's not the only one, a few others I can think of are Rory Flack-Burghart, Elladj Balde, Debi Thomas, Tai Babilonia, Robin Szolkowy, Asher Hill, Yannick Bonheur & Vanessa James (I'm probably missing some others, these ones just come to mind now)... but for the most part figure skating has been a dominately white & asian.
She just wanted to have fun. People get so caught up in competing that they forget what they're supposed be doing: entertain and enjoy the moment! Exactly why YuNa Kim should not be the next Olympics Champion, all she does is whine about how much she hates practicing and skating.
@smartskater1 what the fuck is your problem Ive never heard yu na say that she hates practicing and when she does do poorly on her performances, which there are very few, she states how she needs to work harder next time.
I remember when I saw this LIVE in 1998. I knew NOTHING about figure skating and I just thought that she was this exotic woman that skated so well and I could not believe that she placed so low! I thought that she was the best because of her back flip (I had no idea they were illegal!).
I understand her frustrations, but considering that an ill-timed backflip may have contributed somewhat to the problems she had in Albertville, doing it again IN JAPAN was just not kosher.
That is only speculation. I think it speaks more on Midori Ito than Surya. If someone does a backflip in front on you and you get so upset that you can not pull yourself back together then you have a real problem on your hands.
bravp surya,il fallait le faire ce saltot arriere interdit en competition....c est 1 bon moyen de narguer ces juge qui non rien compris a ton sublime patinage!!!je t aime ma surya..
She should have gone professional right away...She's really NOT a good figure skater overall, but no one can do that back flip like she does! WOW!

The back flip was her "in your face" statement for the judges along with her fnishing her program with her back towards the judges =P

Interesting that all the times I've seen this program, I never noticed her "good bye" wave in her final combination spin.

I meant to state the problems that she caused Midori Ito to have

That was the point. She knew she'd lost her chance for a medal before she retired so she decide to end her career with her signature move.

she is painfully lacking in the flexibility and gracefulness of other skaters. Even Irina Slutskaya can pull off a smoother performance.

The backflip was landed on one foot. Pure awesomeness!
