Has it been 30 years allready? I remember watching this on tv on Rockpalast and recording it on VCR. Never knew I saw history in the making. BTW, my parents recorded a Luis de Funes movie over my video cassete, erasing U2 and The Stranglers. I never got over it..... Thank You,YouTube! And all those posting great videos of great music.
@DinosaurRoamingEarth: you are so right! I think this is one of U2's best classics. In such cases it 's good that this song is forever documented on the album 'BOY'.
The Edge is the Tim Duncan of guitar players....he does not go dance all over the place or make dumb ass faces...he just goes out every time and kicks fucking ass!!!!
I'm totally in love with this song and this U2 era in particular.
It's WAY WAY much better than all that over the top Zoo TV and PopMart non sense. I just simply stopped taking these guys seriously when Bono started using make-up and started humping cameras on stage.
This U2 is so full of passion and charisma, and they don't need extravagant stage sets to put on a good show.
MrJingles79, that was partly the point of Zoo TV and PopMart, that U2 do not take themselves so seriously as the media had made them out to be in the 80s.
The extravagant stage shows were another phase in their lives. People change. Who wants to do the same thing for the rest of their life?
I totally agree. October is actually my favorite record. That was a very emotional and majestic masterpiece. I've got about 2 1 /2 hours worth of demos and singles between 1979-1980, and those days had so much fire that carried them through to Joshua Tree...then they lost it, at least for me. I saw them when they came to America the first time. I was only 12 and my big brother knew the owner of the club. Bijou Cafe in Philadelphia. I can still remember it. Amazing and mesmerizing!
True U2 before they became mainstream. Don't get me wrong, I still love their music to this day. I just miss the hard rock sound from their earlier days.
Of course, we're acting as critics here (the easiest job in the world) but I guess it goes to a matter of heart. Musically, they probably are of the same origin, but earlier it had a certain gravity that propelled it above rabble. Well said by xensboy, they had a more meaningful passion. I'm still their biggest fan.
U2's music attract me in that it is very spiritual - but not exclusively Christian (although I am aware of the biblical references). There first album: Boy, deals with sexuality and the process of turning into a man - hardly a Christian topic if you ask me.
perfect song, I would like to listen this song in the next u2 tour , I only will go to listen this song and "magnificent", because i don't like the new album. LOL :D
I wish they would play this and An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart in concert this year. My other wishes for their set list: Spanish Eyes, Two Hearts Beat As One, The Unforgettable Fire, Wire, Even Better Than the Real Thing; in addition to all the greats they will be playing...
(quote from bono) "i actually think it's about sex in dublin as a teenager. it's about finding a place where you can be with your girlfriend, which was a real problem at the time."
They played in a shit pit of a town in england called uneaton abot 79/80 supporting a band called fabric. They blew the morons away and this song was so apt to all their hard work in the name of god (apart from the non beleiver on bass)
The Edge is the most original guitarist of his generation. How does he get that amazing sound from the geetar ? Amazing how u never ever ever get tired of U2's older material - no matter how many times u hear them. Still sounds very fresh too !! Theres a youtube video of An Cat Dubh from Chicago in Nov 06 - check it out - sounds exactly the same as this original version ! And u should see the glee in Edges & Adams faces as they play it. Lovin it big time! Thank God for U2 !!!!
Way underrated song (like most U2 songs beyond the singles).
This sounds fucking awesome too.

How the fuck do you play the guitar intro? I thought maybe there was a double guitar track on the album, but it sounds exactly the same here.
question444 9 months ago
@question444 check out HarmonicsExplorer's channel, he plays it for you to watch the guitar work.
It's just harmonics on the 12th fret, then the 7 fret, then back to the 12fret.
