This was my 8th grade tolo theme in 1975. I got voted to be the king. That was so embarrasing when your only 14. All my so called buddies laughing at me. But i had the last laugh because the queen was one of the best looking girls in the school.
@LordChocIce Thanks..I saw that the other day....i was AT that NYC Central Park show..I saw him do it there LIVE..it'sa shame that entire concert is not available on official DVD...there were 2 versions on laser disc in the 80's both of which were not the entire concert....In fact there are NO complete EARLY Elton Shows on legit DVD..Come oN Elton..release Dodger Stadium!
my dude is great. great song. gosh the memories he must have. a true singer/ songwriter. lennon jammed with elton/ elton jammed with lennon. give me a shout out!
There is no question that this is in the original key. Elton's voice has a different timbre to it, but the key is the original one. Not only do I have perfect pitch, but I also perform this song (also in the original key). If you don't want to take my word for it, play this, then listen to the original from the CD.
this is sad..he cant sing this song anymore...he looks like a polluted waste dump...and he sounds ragged, loads of edema in that body from eating crap food....
i love and respect him and admire him...he is very special..but this clip..i could live without
He had surger and it made his voice deeper. Read his biography and you can find out why. I love this song. I love his voice deeper also. I ahd some really good times to his songs back in the early 70's. Thanks Sir Elton for all the great tunes and the memories that go along with them.
stevevandien, you're right about his voice being lower. I like how for :47-:50, he's trying so hard to get to his old pitch, and he comes damn near close.
Even as he ages, this man remains a beautifully gifted artist. He is brilliant on piano, and just hearing his voice has brightened MANY a crappy day for me!
@clarkswife06 Thanks so much for responding. I sure agree with you about John's artistry. His performances brightened many dark days over the last 40-odd years, particularly when I was in high school during the mid -1970s. I believe that Sir Elton is one of the great singer-songwriters (got to give Mr. Taupin credit here as well) over the past 40-odd years of pop-rock music:) --
I love this song and Sir Elton's original recording. But his voice has darkened and lowered over the years, so "Harmony" isn't as effective in the original key as it once was. Just my two cents, of course:).
@stevevandien this is in the original key - am I right Steve? His voice is much huskier- not as bright flexible or cutting as it was!-- he has said when he listens to the original sessions he can't believe the lightness of his voice then-- But the recording was never sped up - What you hear is what was actually recorded.-- I remember Elton commenting on this on a VH1 special about the making of Brick Road"
@cathode1990 Don't have a piano or pitch pipe at hand, but am pretty sure it is the original key. Guess I'm biased, because I have kind of an emotional connection to "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," since it came out during my freshman year in high school. John's voice was then a true, soaring and lyrical tenor. That sound made "Harmony" so damn poignant. It's less so today (again, for me) because he no longer has that timbre ---
@anagramish Thanks for writing. Again, I was pretty sure that this was the original key, but not sure, since I have no means of checking it. If not the original, however, it's pretty close; my ear, though imperfect, is good enough to discern that much:) --
@anagramish Just listened to the original GBYBR rendition. Again, have no means of confirming this besides my ear, but am 99 percent sure it's the original key. It does SEEM lower, however; and I believe that's because the timbre of John's voice has darkened so much over the years. The voice has also deepened from a true tenor to a fairly high baritone:) --
@osuvalpal " I am not happy about the rebirth of the Jesuits. Swarms of them will present themselves with more disguises ever taken by even a chief of the Bohemians - as printers, writers, school teachers, etc. If ever an association of people deserved eternal damnation, on this earth and in hell, it is this Society of Loyola (1816).
@osuvalpal This passage is from The incredible marquis by Herbert Gorman entitled the soldier of fortune(chapter six) It was natural that Dumas believed implicitly in the magic of somnambulism, in animal magnetism and in chiromancy. Elton John is a great singer and a gifted composer, but compare his version with that of Joey Tempest, the singer and composer of the band 'Europe',

This has been my favorite song since it came out. It was the "B" side of a 45 and 30 years later it's still my favorite.

It sucks that when we get old our voice loses its edge. He had an awesome voice when he was young.

@smartass2st Ah...You can HEAR he can no longer hit the notes...it's a shame as this is
one of his best melodies..It is also HIS fault he rarely played this song over the past 35 years...
so this is basically the ONLY existing (?) complete VIDEO of him singing this...there may be
a video of the entire Dodger Stadium1975 film but so far it remains unreleased.

@smartass2st yeah, frankly i think he sounded so much better when he could hit higher notes, but of course you can't help it changes with age.
