Putting your knife in a dishwasher can ruin the heat treat, leave knives to the experts son, go on doing gear reviews, selling Colorado Real Estate and all the other horse sh*t associated with selling magazines.
@atomichal You should stop talking. Dishwashers reach about 75 degrees Celsius. Even low temperature tempering needs 150 degrees and may require 750 degrees or more. You don't put knives in the dishwasher because the detergent is alkaline and can etch the steel and erode handle material and damage pivots on folders. The heat is also hard on handles, but has no effect on tempering.
Wait. What? Gear School from March 2007 posted in January 2007? Forget sharpening! Tell me how to build the time machine you used!
Heh. He confused himself, couldn't figure out how to sharpen the other side of the blade. That was a sorry demonstration. 15 degrees on each side, right? 30 degrees inclusive, yes? Nobody here believes you know what you're talking about in this video. BTW, if you have peanut butter on a camping trip, use a fixed blade to spread it. MUCH easier to clean.
What awful advice, it would be detrimental to put a knife of that nature in the dishwasher, and possiby dangerous.
Also, 30 degree angle? It's not an axe! Most factors edges are set at 15-20, so sharpening at an angle of 30 is again, detrimental for E.D.C or camp-type tasks, especially if those tasks are exclusively slicing. Of course I speak from experience, I typically sharpen my knives at a REALLY low angle with a convex so it can hold the sharpness.
Sorry this video seems incomplete. Ray Mears did a better job of keeping knives sharp. This video is a disappointment. And that's not even a fixed blade. Every bushman knows fixed blade are a must in the field.
There's nothing wrong with this advice. It's not a masterclass in sharpening. If you follow this advice you'll always have a clean safe knife with a good working edge, and that's more than 80% of backpackers will. If you want to make your knife super sharp just use basic technique finer grits and practice. It's not rocket science.
Never put a knife in the damn dishwasher, it defeats the purpose of sharpening it, all the banging from other ceramic plates and stuff will put nicks on your edge and ruin it.
And that stone is filthy. It's a diamond sharpener. Wash it off when it gets covered in steel dust, fer cryin' out loud. Uh, but don't run it through the dishwasher. :)
He's hardly a tree hugger, IMO. He's giving questionable advice on knife care. *If* I was was going to use a knife to spread peanut butter on a camping trip, I'd use a fixed blade, not a folder. I certainly wouldn't run any of my pocket knives through the dishwasher. He didn't do a proper sharpening demo. Started out okay, made a baaaad mistake, corrected himself but didn't demonstrate the proper way to do the other side of the blade.
this guy is a fucking retard ya lets use our sog to spread penut butter , better yet lets put it in the fucking dishwasher. just so all u guys know unless u know wat ur doing use an electric sharpener for that kind of knife dont screw it up with some shitty 12 dollar sharpener go buy somethin that will keep it in good shape
Not sure what you mean about an electric sharpener. Do you really use an electric sharpener on pocket knives? You're kidding, right? That little diamond stone he's got is fine, he's just kinda lousy at using it. I would *not* go camping/hiking with the guy in this video.
Here is a handy hint if you have carbon steel to prevent rust; Use the body oils near your nose and behind ears to coat blade and lube latch if folder.
A tree hugger is someone who cares about the only thing in the world that gives us oxygen...they want to save trees from people that dont recognize the importance of them.
"please dont cut down this tree,, I want my grandchildren to be able to breath, and the animals to have a home,,is this a good enough reason to be a tree hugger?
He still dont know shit about a knife,, Good thing its not a high carbon blade.
first , it probally breaks so easily cuz its stainless steel! use carbon steel, its much stronger, it mite have a chance to rust , but if u keep it oiled it wont!
If i was to buy a Diamond sharpener should i buy a fine or a course or both? and they also have extra fine and extra course should i waste my money on does too?
Actually your hatchet should be just as sharp as your pocket knife because the sharper it is the less excessive force you need. Its not the dull edge that makes is strong its the bevel. I would go for both. Get the DMT stones.
Sharpening freehand is the simplest way to sharpen a knife, but it takes a lot of practice before you become proficient at it. For people who can't sharpen a knife freehand (like me) the Gatco or Lansky system are great. The downside to them is the fact that they are bulkier and heavier than a stone.
I have to say it, SOG sucks. second, the method that he used is good for crappy knives (such as the sog)and is not the best method for cleaning knives. dont be a puss, take it apart and clean it. that is the only way you can be sure it is clean. use both blue lubes to clean the blade and tufglide for the pivot. your knife will treat you well.
3-in-1 is a popular brand of light craft oil sold in most hardware stores. It is not as water-resistant as some newer, water-insoluable types of oils on store shelves, but is still effective at cleaning, lubricating, and protecting metals and moving parts that do not require all-weather capability. Be sure to wipe off the excess after you oil the knife blade.
I borrow some sewing machine oil from my mum when I clean my knife. I have never come across 3-in-1 in the UK but Singer Sewing Machines make a good lubricant that has always served me well.
Soaking something in hot or warm water pretty much cleans anything off everything. Haven't tried that with a knife but I figure that hot water will clear the knife, then you can dry and oil it. It will not get rusty as long as it's fully submerged in water or oil.
yikes, going off the edge of the diamond sharpener like that will leave scratches on the face of the blade. i've messed up a couple of my knives doing that. it's better to stop just before the end of the sharpener. and unless you're comfortable sharpening left-handed, sharpening towards you is about your only option and not as risky as it seems.
rather then using a water based solvent... oil, such as wd40 will clean and grease the knife, it will also displace water. wipe off the excess with a rag.

WD-40 is water based eventually it will cause rust, use real honing oil.
Bassman018 2 years ago
LOL Bassman018,
WD-40 was originally designed to displace water, hence its name, WD, water displacement. #40 is the version number.
Its original use was to displace water on missiles, not as a lubricant.

coarse is for sharpening hard steel to a dull but durable edge (like on a hatchet)
fine puts a razor edge on you pocket knife.
as long as you keep your knife sharp you can continously use a very fine stone

However some companies dont allow this because it voids the warranty. Even high end knives like Strider Knives discourage taking the knife apart.
But tufglide is about as good as you can get.
