HP needs to be considered in ratio to weight and wing area...and aerodynamics. The Yak-3 was completely superior to the 109 (all versions) in acceleration, initial rate of climb and turn rate, because despite having a less powerful motor, it was much lighter and cleaner aerodynamically. (it was a fighter and the 109 was an interceptor) And its centrally located 20mm cannon and twin 12.7mm Mg's were more than sufficient to bring down a fighter such as the 109 with one or two bursts.
the G-10 and especially the K4 has much more climb and if it keeps to the verticle it can BnZ the yak-3. The trick is not to get suckered into a low level turn fight.
Make your pass with a lot of bang - if the Yak breaks hard to avoid, pull up and go back up top - and make another pass from above. The Yak will be forced to spend all its time trying to get enough speed back to make another break.
The late model 109's were powerful, heavy planes. Crucially, this meant that they were slower to build up speed. So the zoom and boom tactic required an advantageous higher position, which was not always possible. Also, the Soviets would fly at different altitudes to cover hi-low attacks. As prev posted, the Yak-3 had very good acceleration and very good initial ROC.
(Cont) The attack profile you point to would be deadly if you were in the Yak-3 too! IOW it assumes you have a height advantage and the other pilot is alone and is pretty poor at Situational Awareness. Factors that were not too common for the VVS in 1944-45, especailly the Guards units which flew the -3
@existentialvoid Until you run into a P47. At high altitude, the 109 does not have a prayer. It will be out muscled by the higher boosting Pratt & Whitney R2800, so the only option is to dive away. If the 109 tries this, the Jug pilot has a grin from ear to ear.
The relation weight/power of the yak-3 will defeat B&Z tactics... all time you can you will reach more, and more, and more altitude, and then you will have same energy that the 109, AND WITH A GIFT OF MORE TURN CAPACITY!!!
the germans were already lost by 44. Its the yak 9 and LA-5fn that really did most of the fighter work for the russians - the la 7 and yak 3 were very rare untill the end.

you got it wrong g-2 has much more horse power g- 2should go energy fight.
with low HP yak has no chance.
at this low alt turn fight g-2 has no chance to win yak-3 the turn fighter

@segajin you're wrong the yak 9 is more faster and maneuverable than the me 109 dont believe what german hard losers say

@segajin
Yak-3 can defeat in Energy a 109 easy, runs like hell. That's why german pilots had prihibited fight against a yak-3, run if they saw one.

Not really an even fight.
Bf 109G-2 from late 1942 vs Yak-3 from late 1944. Two years' difference in design.
Yak-3 should be fighting against Bf 109G-10 and Bf 109K-4.

That would even be worse! The G-10 and the K-4 were heavier and less agile! More powerful motor, yes...but greater wing loading.

The 109 is a verticle monster - use it and win.

The song is "Think" (Single Version 2:50) by James Brown, available on iTunes.
The aircraft is the best all around dogfighter (and my personal mount) the Yak3 with the single 20mm in the nose.
She really beats up the Nazis.

@existentialvoid Interesting. I don't have my Yak book handy to check production numbers, but yes the 3's were latecomers to the show.
