The K in KH is German for carbonate. So it's just the amount of carbonate (CO3) and bicarbonate (KCO3). Also called temporary hardness, because it can be boiled off, unlike GH (general hardness) which can't.

The higher the KH, the more stable the pH is, and usually the higher it is.

KH is important to plants and animals because it makes carbon available for tissue growth. In low KH water, snail shells become thin and brittle. And many plants don't grow.

0-4 degrees is soft water.

hey dustin. quick question... how do you keep the temp down in ur tanks on these hot summer days? ive been adding ice to mine like crazy. i wasnt paying attention and it sung up to 88!! i lost a couple of fish =(

@seandelevan they are kinda over running the pond. Not full hate, but i should have put some cool looking guppies in there, they aren't really doing their job either as "mosquito" fish

I have a ton of feeder guppies outside in my pond. If you hand feed your goldfish like I do, you can often get the guppies used to your hands. The other day I decided to try and net my guppies, I was able to get about 90% of young adults/adults... I probably have about 80 guppies and started with 10!

Also, dragonflies will visit your pond and produce offspring in the water. They are predators and will eat your fish fry. I've watched them take a few of my guppies.
