I've always loved Ozzy's voice here. Btw, I met Ozzy about a year ago when he did a booksigning for his book 'I Am Ozzy' in SF....He was really awesome in person.
For me Metallicas version of this proved where they were as a group a brilliant cover!!! But they have done nothing since PUPPETS!!! Where this band as a true LEGASY!!!
the entire concert was on film because just look at deep purples set they captured the entire 2 hour or so set so why on earth has the other bands sets gone missing
Why oh why didn't they have a team of like 50 cameramen on site for the whole show!! I've yet to find a complete video. Thanks very much for sharing! One of the greatest bands doing what they do
@PortsmouthFilms Love your comment man so true ,the best decades for heavy music were late 60's all 70's all 80's after that it started sucking with all this new poser wanna be crap.
@cornytoad Despite the Metallicas, Megadeths, Slayers and pre-lame hip-hop Anthrax, the 80's had lots of poser-metal. But I agree, early Sabbath, Purple, et al were just plain killer!
WOAH!!! Outrageous!!! Tony's solo at the end amazed me. But then Sabbath always amazed me since the early 70s and still today. All I ever listen to. Everything 1980 and back and all rock and heavy metal. Music today in my opinion "sucks" big time!!
No disrespect to Dio. I lamented the day we lost him, but to have the real Black Sabbath, there are four dark wizards that have to be there, Dio is not one of them. Dio is a metal figure unto himself, but Sabbat without Ozzy, Geezer, or Bill, is like the holy trinity with the part of Jesus being played by Adam Sandler. Dio sung some of the darkest lyrics ever, but they didn't scare me the way it did when Ozzy said, "Satan's sitting there. He's smiling." hahahahahaha
This is bad ass always wanted to here this song live. thanks. also iommi is amp is on full blast causing feedback!!! hahaha i do that sometimes. not giving a fuck loud and hard!!!

I've seen Sabbath about 20 times - I still prefer Ozzy over Dio. BUT - probably the craziest Sabbath show was when Rob Halford filled in for Dio on Ozzy's "So Long Tour".
And I think this album and Technical Ecstasy has some of their best songs from the Ozzy era.
Jesus Fuck! The way folks argue on the fuckin screwyoutube comments, god fuckin damn! Somebody said "poppy" lol, you know what is made from the poppy, right?
Well, anyway, just shut the fuck up and dig the fuckin music, ok? The "comments" section is for commenting, not arguing, if that's what it was for it'd be called the fuckin "arguments", ain't it? To blacksabfan: thanx for posting! \m/
Only a fucking RETARD would say anything from Sabbath Bloodly Sabbath is pop rock. That makes no sense whatsoever. Anything Sabbath ever did is about the furthest thing from pop as possible. And Ozzy sounds balls out here. His heyday
@CentraCross Fair enough, but in general being "commercial" means more ACCEPTED by the general public, which Black Sabbath never has been.....except for that song. Kinda means something, doncha think?
@TheEmperorofthevoid True, true (although I think it's rather the term "Mainstream" that means exactly that) - it's actually clear for most /early) metal artists.
@CentraCross Led Zeppelin, though not really metal, had the same problems - but they turned out to be much more "Beatlesque" than the critics and fans first thought. Yet they never sold out or even bothered about what the music business said - they just played the music they want.
Sabbath's the same, but they had much more difficulty making it, because they were not as diverse or experimental - but they were much more so than the critics thought, at least in later years.
@CentraCross It's more about them being Classic Rock than them playing Heavy Rock and -Metal, resp., as many metal bands in the Modern era made it both mainstream, commercialy successful and criticaly accepted, without really doing much about it. But the music became worse the more they were accepted.
The less Pop there is - the worse Rock needs to be to make it. And it is.
@TheEmperorofthevoid yea im one of those that would hang haha, we can just put it like this Led Zep, Cream and Deep Purple were metal before there was a true definition for metal. But then Sabbath came up with something great, thats when all the other bands could be put in the same section as the Sabbath ones. At the end of the day its all blues-rock
@CentraCross Sure, mainstream would be pop music. Which is what Paranoid was for it's time. Very simplistic, catchy music as is the definition of Pop. Not much artistic merit to it. My concern is that people (well, most average 'joe publics' who don't pay attention) think Paranoid defines Sabbath's music which couldn't be further from the truth. Paranoid was, and still is, technically an anomaly amongst their catalogue
Only a fucking RETARD would say anything from Sabbath Bloodly Sabbath is pop rock. That makes no sense whatsoever. Anything Sabbath ever did is about the furthest thing from pop as possible.
@jungleman68 yeah but thats not neccesarily a bad thing. by today's standards it is pop metal, but thats only cuz there are weirdo death metal bands that use over distorted guitars and awful screamo vocals
@junglemaman68 not really. i mean yes the lyrics are about a girl but the screaming lead guitar in this is by no means soft. i guess i see what u are getting at though, compared to screamo bands black sabbath actually incorporated melodys which i guess could be now considered poppy
@allah211 Black Sabbath is NOT pop!! They did not write songs that they thought would be a "hit" and make them tons of money. Paranoid just happened to do that, and they wrote it as a filler without even thinking seriously when writing it. Sabbath's melodies sound evil, melodies don't mean it's pop, melodies have been in music from the dawn of time and only recently have been forgotten by fag screamo breakdown lovers.
I myself like all the different eras of Black Sabbath but I sure am glad the original had reunited and I do hope the original will tour again too, I also hope the issue regarding Ozzy's lawsuit against Tony over the Black Sabbath name will be resolved too (I don't think Ozzy really wanted to sue Tony from the get go, and I think only reason Ozzy sued was to hopefully get the rights to the name split 4 ways between all 4 original members, and I do Ozzy, Tony, Geezer and Bill should share rights).
I prefer this version. That honky tonk piano on the studio version made it far too poppy and it lost its edge, this version is close to perfect though.
@blacksabfan: Allow me to clarify. The full truth isn't out there, but there's been a lot of statements made suggesting that common knowledge is incorrect, e.g., Ozzy has stated that he was tricked by Iommi, who'd agreed to do one last tour and put the Sabbath name to rest. Iommi himself has stated that while he gets all the heat as the bad guy, it was actually others who wanted Ozzy out. Bill's statements over the years confirm this. Thus, things are not as clear cut as one might think.
Lastly, why the fuck are you even arguing with me about this? It's not like I denied that I liked the original lineup the best. I actually do. That said, I'm not changing my mind, and I don't agree with your opinion. Seems pointless. It would be one thing if I was blatantly lying about some historical facts, but I'm not. I just see Black Sabbath as 40+ years of great music, and you see 15? Maybe 9 if you count just original music. I'm not a history rewriter. It is what it is. Like it or not.
This is a great version... Sabbath were notorious for puttin on bad shows, I've heard this from many friends who seen them from 75-78. Bad, especially during the Never Say Die Tour. I seen them in '97 , they were good.
MY GOD OZZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE it his style WTF i dont speak english ...pero saben loq eu siento por ozzy enverdad me encanta su musica es uan vellesa
I remember I was 12...I watched this on TV. I was AMAZED! I rode my bike like, 8 miles the next day to "Zayres" to buy the LP. I rode with it under my arm (SBS). The studio stuff mesmerized me. Still my favorite at 48 yrs old...! Yeah!
Just in case anyone can't figure it out..that WAS Black Sabbath on tour for the Last Supper in 99...they also had reunited back in 93 at Irvine meadows and that was one weird gig of controversy....Dio was being a piss ant so I guess/heard.....Ozzy and crew did perform but also Rob Halford did a set as singer...I was there...also seen these guys about a dozen times since 75...once with AC/DC when not everyone understood Angus(76) and they got booed.Just some trivia.Sabbra Cadabra Y'all!
The best Group ever .Sabbath was my first concert ever .Aug.26,1978 in Madison Sq. Garden .Van Halen was the warm up band it was their fisrt ever tour and Sabbath's last ..What a great show,a great band, and a great time to be alive life w as great ....
I'm just going to assume you're talking to the original poster and not to me, because I'm already very well aware of when Ozzy's last tour w/Sabbath was (discounting their Reunion).
Although it seems like he knows too...the only difference between me and him is that he seems to think Sabbath was over after 1978. I'm going to assume he had a brain fart or just typoed.
So, I sort of don't get the "FYI". I'm already quite privy to that information.
@blacksabfan: With all due respect, there are still many fans who believe that Black Sabbath finished in 1979, not because they hate Dio or the later albums (nor are they making statements about superiority), but because they define Black Sabbath as the unique synthesis of four men, Iommi, Butler, Ward and Osbourne, three of which have said in interviews that they agree, and the fourth, Iommi, who recently said (on his website) that Heaven and Hell have been playing for 30 thirty years.
Well there's what you believe, and there's the truth. Truth is, Black Sabbath existed in other entities besides the first one. I don't consider it any more unique or sacrosanct than any of the others, just different.
Besides, listen to an interview from 1974, 1980, 1983, 1986, 1989, 1992, 1997, 2007, etc. Members have said different things depending on who they are nice with at the time. I don't think one interview or opinion truely clarifies anyone's position.
And for the 24930th time, I'm just asking why the double standard. No one has ever answered this question. Ever. No other bands that had lineup changes get debated as much as Sabbath as to whether output from certain lineups is more credible than another. This might come as a shock, but I don't feel Sabbath is in an way superior to other bands, that they merit an exception to this rule. I like Sabbath a lot, but I'm not some uber-fanboi that judges them by different rules than any other band.
@blacksabfan: There are many original Van Halen fans who disagree with the band carrying on under than name with another singer. A number of original AC/DC fans feel that way as well. So too Genesis fans, Moody Blues fans, etc., For many people, the original lineups of their favorite bands are special, in fact, sacrosanct. Personally, I love the later albums with Dio, Gillan and Hughes, but they're different bands, and deserve a different name to distinguish those significant differences.
And there's a lot of people who don't believe that with other bands. Even if people have a favorite lineup of bands such as Maiden, AC/DC, Van Halen, Purple, etc., there at least seems to be acceptance of the other lineups. Any hatred of certain lineups don't touch the people who continuely deny certain lineups of Sabbath...it's like some pathological need for people like you to stress over and over that the only legitmate lineup included Ozzy.
@thesithempire The reality is that bands carry on with the same name because they have built a huge fan base, regardless of the change in line ups! Its all about money at the end of the day. Atleast the greatest band in the world ever, had the good decency to split up after John Bonham died. Led Zeppelin didnt need to cash in and replace Bonzo, that would be an insult to Bonzo, and would appear a cynical exploitation of LZ fans. Respect to LZ in doing the decnt thing.
@blacksabfan: The truth is that things are rarely ever black and white. Iommi sought to change the name after Dio was fired, but management wouldn't hear of it -- which means that the Sabbath name on the later covers was not his wish or his design. The truth is that Bill Ward and Ozzy have consistently said that Black Sabbath is the original incarnation alone, and that Geezer Butler did tell Mick Wall: I always said if any of us ever left, it wouldnt be Black Sabbath anymore—and it wasnt.
Well if Iommi truly cared, he would of packed it in. For every quote you provide from the Reunion era when it was all good vibes among the original members, I can provide no less than 3 when Iommi quoted excitement/hope for a particular lineup of Sabbath. It's all to be taken in context. Ozzy and Ward have their biases, but I know there's been times when Geezer was quite enthuastic about Dio being in Sabbath, and Iommi (along with Cozy Powell) harped the Headless Cross era.
@fitdaws I saw them on that tour also. September 4th 1978, Cape Cod coliseum and VH opened. They had just released their first album maybe a month earlier I think. I know the date cuz I still have my ticket stub, it cost a whole 2 hours pay, $7.50
@skulls1964 was that the show when Sabbath's equipment got sabotaged or something and they had to cut out early...did Bill try to wing a drum solo, but gave up after the rest of the band left the stage? haha..i think i read about that one in a biography
Hm, I'm willing to guess that the reason the sound is different is because it was (maybe) recorded straight to a soundboard instead of the normal recording route
Dude I live in Ontario Cali. I cant believe they tore down the speed way who knows how many more legendary bands could have played here. Its a damn shame! =/
According to stuff I've seen on the 'net the Set list is as follows: 01-tomorrow's dream 02-sweet leaf 03-killing yourself to live 04-war pigs 05-snowblind 06-sabra cadabra 07-supernaut -inc jam 08-iron man 09-sabra cadabra reprise 10-paranoid 11-children of the grave If you look, you can find it on the net to dl....
Yeah, it's all over the place. It's pretty easy to find. The best copy I know though is on TheTradersDen, which is supposed to be a 1st generation tape, with no between track editing. That's what you are hearing above. A lot of bootleg copies are edited and are from lower quality generation tapes.
I have this song on record, and on the live version Ozzy's voice is half a note flat, plus Iommi's guitar's a bit off-tune, but I play live as well and fined that that happens quite quickly. I love this song, It was the second (or first) best the album only short of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Great Song (Tony Iommi's my favorite).
I've always really wanted to see one of these on-stage jams, and I know that there is footage of California Jam (like 4 songs or something), I was just wondering - Do you know if this song, and the rest of Sabbath at California Jam is on video somewhere?
The complete footage from Sabbath was deleted by ABC sometime in the 1980s. All that supposedly exists is the 4 songs you mentioned.
That said, there used to be a guy on YouTube (who no longer has a page here) who had FULL COLOR footage of those 4 Sabbath songs in amazing quality, as well as footage from the other bands that performed that day. I used to subscribe to him, but he's long gone for unknown reasons.
I'm the first.. 99,999 left.. I m trying for a long time to find the hole show in color but the only thing that exists is the DP part of the show.. Great song by the way. Great album.. Anyway BS fucking rules!!!!
DBM11085 If you really have a VHS of this show, by digitally recording it, you would be preserving history. It's up to us now. The digital age is here. Share the wealth You SABATH HOG. ...Kidding..
That's one of them. There's also one called "Metal Mess", another called "Cannibis Confusion", and probably a few others. The very best recording I've heard of this show doesn't come from any bootleg at all, but from a first generation cassette of the show that a certain trader received from the taper himself.
i once found a wav version of the entire show, but i didnt know how to download it, i suppose i'd have to plug a recorder into my pc to the speaker jack
Yeah, there's so many versions of this show floating around. Although Geezer comes through weak here, I think the capture I have is probably the best because it keeps in all the in-between chatter and the sound hasn't been screwed around with. I offer it for download on Soulseek (in .flac), and the same recording can be found on TheTradersDen, if you're into torrents. This is supposed to be like a first generation capture of the show. Most are about 3rd or 4th.
I hope this video come's out of the vault. Us Sabbath fans deserve it. Maiden had their early year's with the Somewhere in Time tour footage released so I don't see why they couldn't do the same by releasing the CalJam.
make love allll night long! :D

Thus, things are not as clear cut as one might think.
thesithempire 1 year ago

Garden .Van Halen was the warm up band it was their fisrt ever tour and Sabbath's last ..What a great show,a great band, and a great time to be alive life w as great ....
skulls1964 2 years ago 6
It wasn't Sabbath's last tour...
Ozzy's last tour with Sabbath...yes.
blacksabfan 2 years ago
ozzy's last tour w/ sabbath was in 1978 FYI...w/ Van Halen as opening band....saw them in 9/78.
fitdaws 2 years ago
I'm just going to assume you're talking to the original poster and not to me, because I'm already very well aware of when Ozzy's last tour w/Sabbath was (discounting their Reunion).
Although it seems like he knows too...the only difference between me and him is that he seems to think Sabbath was over after 1978. I'm going to assume he had a brain fart or just typoed.
So, I sort of don't get the "FYI". I'm already quite privy to that information.
blacksabfan 2 years ago
@blacksabfan: With all due respect, there are still many fans who believe that Black Sabbath finished in 1979, not because they hate Dio or the later albums (nor are they making statements about superiority), but because they define Black Sabbath as the unique synthesis of four men, Iommi, Butler, Ward and Osbourne, three of which have said in interviews that they agree, and the fourth, Iommi, who recently said (on his website) that Heaven and Hell have been playing for 30 thirty years.
thesithempire 1 year ago
@thesithempire
I don't think one interview or opinion truely clarifies anyone's position.
blacksabfan 1 year ago
And for the 24930th time, I'm just asking why the double standard. No one has ever answered this question. Ever. No other bands that had lineup changes get debated as much as Sabbath as to whether output from certain lineups is more credible than another. This might come as a shock, but I don't feel Sabbath is in an way superior to other bands, that they merit an exception to this rule. I like Sabbath a lot, but I'm not some uber-fanboi that judges them by different rules than any other band.
blacksabfan 1 year ago
@blacksabfan: There are many original Van Halen fans who disagree with the band carrying on under than name with another singer. A number of original AC/DC fans feel that way as well. So too Genesis fans, Moody Blues fans, etc., For many people, the original lineups of their favorite bands are special, in fact, sacrosanct. Personally, I love the later albums with Dio, Gillan and Hughes, but they're different bands, and deserve a different name to distinguish those significant differences.
thesithempire 1 year ago
@thesithempire
And there's a lot of people who don't believe that with other bands. Even if people have a favorite lineup of bands such as Maiden, AC/DC, Van Halen, Purple, etc., there at least seems to be acceptance of the other lineups. Any hatred of certain lineups don't touch the people who continuely deny certain lineups of Sabbath...it's like some pathological need for people like you to stress over and over that the only legitmate lineup included Ozzy.
blacksabfan 1 year ago
@thesithempire The reality is that bands carry on with the same name because they have built a huge fan base, regardless of the change in line ups! Its all about money at the end of the day. Atleast the greatest band in the world ever, had the good decency to split up after John Bonham died. Led Zeppelin didnt need to cash in and replace Bonzo, that would be an insult to Bonzo, and would appear a cynical exploitation of LZ fans. Respect to LZ in doing the decnt thing.
coltsuperocean10 1 year ago
@blacksabfan: The truth is that things are rarely ever black and white. Iommi sought to change the name after Dio was fired, but management wouldn't hear of it -- which means that the Sabbath name on the later covers was not his wish or his design. The truth is that Bill Ward and Ozzy have consistently said that Black Sabbath is the original incarnation alone, and that Geezer Butler did tell Mick Wall: I always said if any of us ever left, it wouldnt be Black Sabbath anymore—and it wasnt.
thesithempire 1 year ago
@thesithempire
Well if Iommi truly cared, he would of packed it in. For every quote you provide from the Reunion era when it was all good vibes among the original members, I can provide no less than 3 when Iommi quoted excitement/hope for a particular lineup of Sabbath. It's all to be taken in context. Ozzy and Ward have their biases, but I know there's been times when Geezer was quite enthuastic about Dio being in Sabbath, and Iommi (along with Cozy Powell) harped the Headless Cross era.
blacksabfan 1 year ago
@fitdaws I saw them on that tour also. September 4th 1978, Cape Cod coliseum and VH opened. They had just released their first album maybe a month earlier I think. I know the date cuz I still have my ticket stub, it cost a whole 2 hours pay, $7.50

@skulls1964 was that the show when Sabbath's equipment got sabotaged or something and they had to cut out early...did Bill try to wing a drum solo, but gave up after the rest of the band left the stage? haha..i think i read about that one in a biography

Hey blacksabfan, I was just wondering..
I've always really wanted to see one of these on-stage jams, and I know that there is footage of California Jam (like 4 songs or something), I was just wondering - Do you know if this song, and the rest of Sabbath at California Jam is on video somewhere?
Thanks
Josh3200 2 years ago
Here's what I know...
Hope that helps some.

That's one of them. There's also one called "Metal Mess", another called "Cannibis Confusion", and probably a few others. The very best recording I've heard of this show doesn't come from any bootleg at all, but from a first generation cassette of the show that a certain trader received from the taper himself.
