To me, it makes good sense to eat foods that need minimal to no processing to make them palatable (sp?) Grains just don't fit into that category, for instance. I totally agree with using a blender as opposed to a juicer, because as Bill said, your body needs the fiber and juices over-work the pancreas which can lead to diseases such as diabetes, pancreatic cancer and many, many more. For an informative video on our food industry, watch Food Inc. (available on Netflix streaming).
I highly recommend anyone thinking of starting a diet like this one listen to the Skeptoid Podcast episodes: "Natural Hygiene" and "Raw Food - Raw Deal?"
@QueenSemiramis Of course that's not how our ancestors actually ATE back then. Archeological evidence shows they cooked their food for example. The "Paleo Diet" doesn't really have much to do with what pre-humans ate in the distant past. It's just a silly diet and marketing gimmick cooked up (pun intended) by folks looking to sell books.
@QueenSemiramis That's flawed logic. fixing the problems in the modern diet makes more sense than cooking up a completely new fantasy land diet based upon a fictional vision of what pre-human ancestors might have eaten.
Notions of "raw" diets being "more natural" are based not upon any facts or data, but upon misconceptions and delusions. How can you construct something healthy when it's founded on bad data?
I remember reading a while ago about a study done on a small group of raw vegans (very limited, but it was in the news) . They were deemed ‘very healthy’. I don’t know of any large-scale studies done, but I know personally that I felt pretty good on my 30-day raw challenge. Anyway, I’m not really a proponent of 100% raw or raw vegan, but the ‘experts’ are always telling us to eat foods as close to their natural states as possible, raw in the case of fruits & veggies,....
@halleyscomet ...due to the damage/ loss of nutrients that results from cooking & over processing. Raw is great, but it takes a lot of food prep time…that’s why I like Paleo/ Primal. Minimal processing of food & lots of fat! People buy these books because they want to be healthy, but don’t know where to start. The old way obviously isn’t working. What do you suggest?
@QueenSemiramis "damage/ loss of nutrients that results from cooking"
Such as?
The idea that cooking food reasonably destroys nutrient content is an old canard. What nutritive content in vegetables is actually harmed by sauteing or steaming them?
A healthy, balanced, varied diet where you eat only as many calories as you burn is going to do more for you than gimmicks like not cooking vegetables.
@halleyscomet I’m sure there are tons of sources stating that less processed foods are healthier, but I’m not supplying them because last I checked, I’m not getting paid for this back and forth exchange. But do you really need an expert to tell you that raw fruits & veggies are healthy? Do you need an expert to tell you that an apple is healthier than a pre-packaged nutritionally devoid snack? I glanced over the raw deal write-up, and they just seem to be reacting what they see an attack
@halleyscomet What’s happening right now with cancer, diabetes and heart disease is sure to be more of a problem than a paleo diet. I’ve had much more success with Paleo than I’ve had with any low cal diet (or low carb diet)…that’s because, for *ME*, the high fat content acts as an appetite suppressant. I’m always hungry if I eat processed carbs, and calorie counting goes out of the window when I‘m over my limit but still hungry (pain in the ass anyway!).
@halleyscomet What exactly does a ‘healthy, balanced diet’ consist of? There’s more than one way…etc, etc. What works for you may not work for everyone.
spinach, carrots, celery, cucumber, tomato, avocado, basil, cayenne, pepper&salt. sometimes salsa is a nice quick fix to replace the tomatoes if not totally raw. i always feel clean and energized eating that way

That drink would be nasty without fruit or fats. Greens are bitter and nasty.

Maybe. But at this point, anything is better than the standard American diet! lol

No, I'm just saying the claims of the Paleo diet are overblown.
